Chapter 14

William Thompson has already said that the organization will investigate David Bolton.

However, without orders from William Thompson, Andrew Carter cannot make contact with David Bolton.

Maintaining normal contact with David Bolton does not count as a violation for Andrew Carter.

“An invitation is not as good as a chance encounter. How about tomorrow? After work, come to my place for a drink. I also serve food there, and the cook’s skills are quite good.” David Bolton insisted on inviting him.

“I might not have time tomorrow.” Andrew Carter shook his head.

Before getting instructions from William Thompson, of course he couldn’t just go and meet David Bolton at will.

On the third day, Andrew Carter had no intention of going to the Guangfa Hotel.

On the fourth day, given the mysterious identity of David Bolton, he naturally had to ask William Thompson for instructions.

Before work was over, William Thompson arrived at the British concession. He thought that to meet Andrew Carter, he only needed to show up on 24th Road, and Andrew Carter would get the message.

“What happened?” Andrew Carter quickly met up with William Thompson and asked anxiously.

“Two things. The organization has already rented No. 3 Oxford Villa. If anything happens over there in the future, you need to report it promptly. Also, about David Bolton’s identity—he’s with the Military Statistics Bureau.” William Thompson said in a low voice.

“What? The Military Statistics Bureau!” Andrew Carter exclaimed in a low voice.

Ever since he noticed something odd about David Bolton, he had been speculating about his identity. However, he never imagined that David Bolton would actually be with the Military Statistics Bureau.

“My analysis is that David Bolton lent you money probably to attract you into their organization.” William Thompson said slowly.

“Impossible!” Andrew Carter said firmly.

He had heard from William Thompson that the Military Statistics Bureau had harmed many Communists.

The Military Statistics Bureau is the sworn enemy of the CCP. Now that he knew David Bolton’s identity, he should find a way to eliminate him.

“We’ll discuss this issue later.” William Thompson waved his hand.

After learning David Bolton’s identity, he was also quite surprised.

However, his thoughts were a bit different from Andrew Carter’s.

“Last night, David Bolton came to see me.” Andrew Carter reported what happened last night to William Thompson.

“It seems he’s ready to reveal the truth.” William Thompson said slowly.

“What should I do?” Andrew Carter asked, feeling truly lost at the moment.

If David Bolton revealed his identity to him, should he refuse or join?

Andrew Carter was determined not to collude with the Military Statistics Bureau, but William Thompson’s attitude just now made him feel that the organization might have other considerations.

“Today wasn’t originally the time to discuss this. But since David Bolton invited you to dinner tonight, I can only convey the organization’s opinion. We hope you can join the Military Statistics Bureau in your personal capacity and take the opportunity to provide valuable intelligence for the Party.” William Thompson said slowly.

Our Party’s underground work is not about direct confrontation with the Military Statistics Bureau, nor is armed struggle the principle of our underground work.

Taking the opportunity to infiltrate the Military Statistics Bureau and plant a reliable agent inside would be more beneficial for future work.

“But how many of our comrades have they harmed!” Andrew Carter hadn’t even considered whether he could complete this task.

He still couldn’t wrap his head around it.

The Party’s organization in Haigu had been destroyed multiple times, and the Military Statistics Bureau’s hands were stained with the blood of Communists. How could he possibly work with them?

“Comrade Andrew Carter, this is a task the Party is assigning to you. Have you thought about it? If you can infiltrate the Military Statistics Bureau, the organization will be able to get their information in time, and it will be much harder for them to persecute us in the future. Of course, the organization also wants your opinion. If you don’t want to take on this task, the higher-ups will give up this opportunity. At the same time, we also need to assess whether you have the ability to complete this task.” William Thompson said seriously.

Letting Andrew Carter work in the police department to cover up his identity as a Communist was already a huge test for him.

If he infiltrated the Military Statistics Bureau, the demands on Andrew Carter would be even higher.

In the police department, Andrew Carter only needed to do his job well.

As long as he was careful, his identity generally wouldn’t be exposed.

But it would be different in the Military Statistics Bureau, where he would be facing professional agents.

These people never truly trust anyone. Other than themselves, they trust no one.

In the police department, if Andrew Carter made a mistake, it wouldn’t have much impact.

But if he infiltrated the Military Statistics Bureau and slipped up, his life would be in danger.

Inside the enemy, once his identity was exposed, it would be a matter of life and death.

Therefore, Andrew Carter needed to be even more composed and calm, able to adapt to changing situations, and always be prepared to sacrifice himself.

William Thompson believed that Andrew Carter could achieve that last point.

As a Communist who had been a Party member for almost two years, Andrew Carter was already prepared to give everything for the Party.

Therefore, his loyalty and courage were beyond doubt.

However, Andrew Carter was still young and had not received professional training.

At the Haigu Police Training Institute, William Thompson had only passed on some of his experience to him.

Although the Haigu Public Security Bureau was also an enemy unit,

Compared to the Military Statistics Bureau, the danger level at the Haigu Public Security Bureau was much lower.

At the very least, as a senior officer in the pre-trial division, he was not surrounded by professional agents.
