Chapter 17

At this moment, he already understood that Richard Scott had seen through him, but he also saw that Richard Scott was powerless to resist. Stephen Wood let out a sinister laugh, “General Scott, sorry, but I’ll burn more paper money for you.”

He raised the dagger high. Richard Scott let out a mournful cry in his heart—he hadn’t died on the battlefield, but was about to die at the hands of a villain. Just then, Richard Scott’s eyes suddenly lit up, staring intently behind Stephen Wood.

Stephen Wood sneered, “You can’t fool me anymore. Go to hell!”

Just as he was about to stab down, a sharp pain shot through his back. He slowly lowered his head and saw the tip of a sword protruding from his chest.

Stephen Wood turned his head and finally saw Chris Lewis standing right behind him, glaring at him in fury. Stephen Wood raised his hand to point at Chris Lewis, and with his last strength shouted, “You’re... an imposter!”

With that shout, Stephen Wood collapsed to the ground, dead.

Chris Lewis pulled the short sword from his back and, with disgust, kicked him away. The corpse rolled over twice, and a paper packet fell from his arms. Chris Lewis picked up the packet and sniffed it, his eyes suddenly lighting up—it was a packet of top-quality wound medicine, which the man had been carrying with him.

“Damn it!”

Chris Lewis cursed. He had been searching everywhere for medicine for the wounds, and that was why Richard Scott’s injuries had worsened. This bastard had been hiding the medicine all along and refused to hand it over.

With the excellent wound medicine, hope was rekindled in Chris Lewis’s heart. He hurried over to support Richard Scott, asking with concern, “General Scott, are you alright?”

Chapter 14: You Saved My Life Again

Richard Scott said in a low voice, “You’ve saved my life again.”

“No!”

Chris Lewis said bitterly, “You can know a person’s face but not their heart. I was blind to keep this viper by my side and nearly got you killed, General.”

Chris Lewis took the water flask and carefully gave Richard Scott a few sips, then smiled, “It’s just rainwater, probably doesn’t taste good. Once we get to Xiangyang, I’ll buy you some fine wine to make up for it.”

Richard Scott smiled faintly, “Then I’ll treat you to a drink!”

Chris Lewis then applied the wound medicine to Richard Scott. The water and medicine quickly worked wonders—Richard Scott’s temperature gradually returned to normal, no longer burning hot, which greatly relieved Chris Lewis.

At this moment, the sky seemed to brighten. Chris Lewis turned his head and saw that both mountain ridges were filled with torches—Cao’s army had taken the small paths up the mountain from behind, cutting off their retreat.

Chris Lewis gave a wry smile. As expected of Cao Cao—he loved to cut off people’s escape routes.

“Mr. Chris, you should go! Don’t worry about me.” Richard Scott also realized how dangerous their situation was and didn’t want to drag Chris Lewis down any further.

But Chris Lewis just smiled and shook his head, “Don’t say that. On the battlefield, you didn’t abandon me—how could I abandon you now?”

Richard Scott looked silently at the young man, his nose tingling with emotion. This youth was so loyal and righteous—how could he ever repay such kindness?

Chris Lewis thought for a moment, then said to Richard Scott, “At this point, I can only take a risk. Whether we survive this or not depends on our luck.”

Richard Scott sighed softly, “To die on the battlefield with you, I, Richard Scott, would have no regrets!”

Chris Lewis stood up and said with a smile, “Cao’s army wants to kill us, but it won’t be that easy.”

He looked around. They were between two mountain ridges. The main force of Cao’s army was concentrated on the northern ridge; though there were also soldiers blocking their escape on the southern ridge, their numbers were few, especially toward the southeast, where the torches were even sparser.

“Brother Scott, can you walk a few steps?”

Richard Scott felt some sensation returning to his legs and nodded, “I’ll give it a try!”

Chris Lewis helped Richard Scott up, tucked Stephen Wood’s corpse under his arm, and, supporting Richard Scott, hobbled off toward the southeast.

Chris Lewis supported Richard Scott as they walked along the mountainside for a while. Then he spotted a cave. The cave seemed bottomless—Chris Lewis picked up a stone and tossed it in, and it was a long time before he heard an echo.

This cave was perfect for hiding a body. Chris Lewis found a low spot nearby and said to Richard Scott with a smile, “Brother Scott, lie down for a bit. I’ll be right back.”

Richard Scott lay down and closed his eyes. At this moment, he had entrusted both his honor and his life to Chris Lewis.

Chris Lewis used branches to cover Richard Scott and Stephen Wood’s corpse, got his bearings, and ran off toward the southeast.

There weren’t many Cao soldiers searching in the southeast—just over three hundred, and they were quite spread out. This gave Chris Lewis an opportunity.

About two hundred paces from the cave, Chris Lewis found a lone Cao soldier. He casually tossed Richard Scott’s helmet on the ground, drew his short sword, and climbed up a tree.

Soon, the Cao soldier came by with a torch. He spotted the helmet on the ground and bent down to pick it up. As he examined it, Chris Lewis leapt down from the tree, tackled the soldier to the ground, pressed his face into the dirt, and stabbed him through the back with his sword...

He quickly stripped the armor from the Cao soldier and put it on himself. Looking around, he saw another lone torch not far away.

Chris Lewis dashed over, soon reaching the next Cao soldier. Hiding behind a tree, he waited for the man to approach, then suddenly jumped out, pointed his sword at the soldier’s chest, and shouted, “Password!”

The Cao soldier was startled, but seeing it was one of his own, quickly replied, “Draw the net!”

So the password was “draw the net,” not “chicken rib.” Chris Lewis smiled, then suddenly pointed behind the man in alarm and said, “What’s that behind you?”
