After waking up at dawn, he first checked on the status of the Lord’s Heart. To his surprise, the thing was still there—more obedient than a dog. The moment he called for it in his mind, it appeared instantly, which left him feeling utterly exasperated.
What was even more exasperating was that as soon as he arrived at the company, he was summoned to the office by HR Director. The old guy wore a professional fake smile, and, both openly and subtly, hinted that the company believed his current mental state was unfit for work, suggesting he should take a break and give himself some time off.
Robert Walker understood what HR Director meant. The company was planning to lay him off. All that talk about taking a break and giving himself a vacation was just a fancy excuse. But he was prepared for this. The company’s performance had been poor, and layoffs had started before the New Year. Now that he was considered mentally unstable, it gave HR the perfect excuse to cut him.
Anyway, he was planning to go to New Zealand, so he decided not to put up with it any longer. He slapped the table and said directly, “Alright, Director Carter, don’t trouble yourself. I resign.”
After hearing this, HR Director’s smile became a bit more genuine. “Then go back and write your resignation letter. You need to write three copies: one for the company, one for the general manager, and one for your Director Howard.”
In fact, Robert Walker had long since lost patience with this job. The company’s prospects were bleak, the team atmosphere was chaotic, the leadership was useless, and colleagues were always scheming against each other. The appearance of the Lord’s Heart had simply helped him make the decision.
He took out some stationery and began to write his resignation letters. Since he had to write three, he decided to use a three-part format. The resignation letter to the general manager read: Boss, if the company were a woman, with the way you’re running things, she’d be dead by now.
The letter to his colleagues read: Sorry, everyone, your brother is off to save the world.
The letter to the shrewd woman read: Mr. Howard, your period has lasted too long. If it won’t leave, then I will.
After checking over the three resignation letters and finding no issues, Robert Walker delivered them to HR Director. HR Director was about to praise him for his efficiency, but after reading the three letters, his face turned green. He frowned and said angrily, “Little Walker, is it really appropriate for you to write like this?”
Robert Walker didn’t even look back. “If it’s not appropriate, you can write one for me. What, the company lays off a loyal, hardworking old employee like me, and I’m supposed to be grateful and thank you for your kindness?”
After hastily packing up his things from his desk, he returned to his rented apartment to start preparing for his trip to New Zealand.
New Zealand is a major tourist destination and values its relationship with China, so getting a tourist visa wasn’t difficult. While handling the visa, he went home to visit his parents and told them that work hadn’t been going well lately and he wanted to travel to relax.
After graduating, Robert Walker had worked extremely hard—almost to the point of self-destruction. His parents had always advised him to just do his best at work and not to push himself so hard. So when they learned he wanted to go abroad to unwind, they didn’t stop him, only reminding him to call often.
Before leaving, Robert Walker went to see his good buddy from his hometown, David Clark. Not only did they drink and catch up, but he also confided in him: “Old Clark, I’m heading to New Zealand this time, and who knows what might happen. If something does, please look after my parents for me.”
David Clark was a young man about his age, known for his loyalty. Upon hearing this, he immediately patted his chest and said, “Don’t worry, Old Walker. If anything happens to you, your parents are my parents, your wife—damn, you don’t even have a wife yet—oh crap, that’s not right. What could possibly happen to you on a trip? The way you’re talking, it sounds like you’re making some kind of deathbed request.”
He was loyal, sure, but not the sharpest tool in the shed. In today’s slang, you’d call him a bit slow. But he was simple and sincere, and among all the friends Robert Walker had known since childhood, he was one of the closest.
Listening to his rambling, Robert Walker gave a wry smile and said, “It’s nothing. Just going abroad—accidents can happen. Of course, maybe I’ll strike it rich, and I definitely won’t forget you then…”
“Strike it rich? How are you going to do that?” David Clark stared at him, then suddenly gasped, “Holy crap, Old Walker, are you going abroad to get into pyramid schemes? I’m telling you, even I know you can’t touch that stuff!”
After hearing this, Robert Walker didn’t even have the energy to force a smile.
The tragic part was, there were neighbors at David Clark’s house at the time, and soon the news that he was going abroad to join a pyramid scheme spread throughout the nearby villages. Robert Walker really couldn’t stay at home any longer and had to leave early.
Chapter 4 Old Walker, Run!
By mid-November, everything was ready. Robert Walker returned to Beijing, dragging his suitcase and carrying his backpack, setting off on his journey of exploration.
China and New Zealand—one in the Northern Hemisphere, one in the Southern—are separated by more than ten thousand kilometers. There was no direct flight from the capital airport, so he had to transfer. Robert Walker bought an economy ticket, transferred in Hong Kong, and after more than ten hours, arrived in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand.
Sitting on the plane, Robert Walker had no idea what awaited him, and inevitably began to feel anxious and melancholy.
As it turned out, a blonde beauty sitting next to him sized him up for a while, then suddenly struck up a conversation with him, saying he had a deep, melancholic aura that was very attractive.
There was no doubt about it—the beauty was giving him a clear hookup signal.
