After a minute or two, another white man came running over. He looked to be in his thirties, panting heavily, and as he arrived, he cursed intermittently, “You, you, your damn mother! You, you, did you train for long, long, long-distance running in China? Are you Liu Xiang or something? Damn, you can really run! My, my, my heart, liver, spleen, lungs, and kidneys have all been run out of me…”
During the chase, the other white men were shouting in English, which Robert Walker couldn’t really understand, but now this white man was speaking Mandarin, so he was overjoyed and quickly called out, “Sir, I’m not a bad person! I haven’t done anything wrong! There must be some misunderstanding…”
“Of, of, of course it’s a misunderstanding! I’m asking, why, why are you running? Let me catch my breath, whew.” The middle-aged man cursed, hands on his knees, “Why are you running? And you guys, why are you grabbing him? Let him go!”
The burly man holding Robert Walker hesitated and said, “Sir, if he runs away again, we might have a hard time catching him!”
“Why are you catching him?!” the middle-aged man shouted again, then continued to gasp for air, “Whew, whew, listen, Robert Walker, you’re Robert Walker, right? The new lord of the Land of the Never-Setting Sun? Whew, whew, let me introduce myself, I’m a staff member of the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, my name is Charles Stallone. Damn, I’m exhausted, let me catch my breath…”
Robert Walker stared blankly at this man, quickly thinking to himself, what on earth is going on?
“Robert Walker, I want to know, why did you run just now?” Charles asked after catching his breath.
Old Walker said aggrievedly, “You were trying to catch me, how could I not run? My friend said she even heard you guys say you wanted to teach me a lesson!”
“She must have overheard one of my guys complaining. Please forgive us, my subordinates can never keep their mouths shut.” Charles glared at the men in black suits and waved for them and the airport security to back off.
Then, in a much gentler tone, he said, “This is clearly a misunderstanding, buddy, we weren’t trying to catch you, we just wanted to find you! In fact, I’m the person officially assigned by New Zealand to pick you up and take you to the Land of the Never-Setting Sun to take over the territory. In other words, for the time being, I’m your assistant, here to help you with any difficulties you encounter during the handover.”
Hearing this, Robert Walker became confused and hesitantly said, “Mr. Stallone, could you explain to me what exactly the Land of the Never-Setting Sun is?”
Charles gave him a strange look, then took him out of the airport and into a Land Rover SUV, saying he’d take him to the hotel to rest. On the way, he gave him some information about the Land of the Never-Setting Sun.
Chapter 5: The Lord’s Wheel That Won’t Turn
The Land of the Never-Setting Sun is a territory, just as shown in the game. This territory covers an area of one thousand square kilometers, located on the edge of the Otago region. It backs onto New Zealand’s Southern Alps and faces the Canterbury Plains, with mostly plains and small hills within its borders, fertile soil, and beautiful scenery.
The reason this place is called a “领” (territory) is because it is a noble estate within New Zealand.
As everyone knows, New Zealand, along with Australia, Canada, India, and others, is a member of the Commonwealth, and was once a British colony. Although these countries have been independent for many years, they still bear some marks of Britain, and noble estates are one such mark.
Noble estates appeared in New Zealand very early on. In 1840, the British used force to compel the indigenous Maori to sign the Treaty of Waitangi. According to the treaty, the Maori had to sell their land to the British Crown, after which new immigrants came to New Zealand and bought land from the Crown. At that time, some wealthy nobles bought up large tracts of land—these became the earliest noble estates.
Later, New Zealand became independent, but the government did not abolish these noble estates, because many upright and conscientious nobles had helped during the founding of the new government. To express their gratitude, the new government allowed these nobles to keep their estates in New Zealand.
However, according to New Zealand’s Constitution Act of 1986, the privileges of nobles within their estates have been severely restricted and reduced. Now, these estates are essentially just land purchased by nobles; rights such as garrisoning troops, diplomacy, and taxation have all been stripped away.
The Land of the Never-Setting Sun is naturally one of these estates. It used to belong to the The Roberts Family, but the last owner and only member of this family, Howard Fitzalan Roberts, died ten days ago. Before his death, he designated the inheritance of the estate—to Robert Walker.
At this point, Charles looked at Robert Walker with a puzzled expression and asked, “What is your relationship with Sir Roberts? Why did the Sir leave your information in his will?”
Robert Walker didn’t answer, because he didn’t know how to. He did a quick calculation in his mind—the time when Roberts designated the estate’s inheritance was exactly the day he started the game. That was truly strange!
Charles wanted to ask more about this, but Robert Walker excused himself, saying he was tired, and went straight to his room after arriving at the hotel. Charles was a smart man; seeing that he didn’t want to answer, he just shrugged and didn’t ask again.
