Chapter 11

There were only a few exchanges between the two sides, mostly just some polite greetings. The meeting ended quickly, and just as the British were preparing to see their guests out, Samuel Swift suddenly said, “Your Majesty, to celebrate your birthday, our Empress Dowager has also prepared a special gift for you.”

Franklin Young hurriedly translated this sentence.

Although she was quite surprised, Queen Victoria still smiled and expressed her thanks, then casually asked what the gift was.

Samuel Swift glanced at Franklin Young, signaling him to explain.

“Your Majesty, in fact, I am not only His Excellency the Minister’s interpreter, but also a doctor. My family has secret ancestral remedies, which have the power to bring people back from the brink of death for many diseases, even some incurable ones, such as tuberculosis, relapsing fever, cholera, and even hemophilia,” Franklin Young said with a smile.

“What did you say?” The old lady could no longer remain calm; she even instinctively made a move to stand up. You see, her youngest son, Prince Leopold, had died of hemophilia just a few years ago, and several of her grandsons had also died from this terrible disease. In addition, she had two other sons who died young because of it.

“I am able to treat many diseases, including tuberculosis, relapsing fever, hemophilia, cholera, ah, and diphtheria. In fact, you could say my medicine cures as soon as it’s administered,” Franklin Young said, suddenly recalling that one of the old lady’s daughters and a granddaughter had died of diphtheria.

Queen Victoria lost her composure a bit. She sat there in a daze, a trace of deep sadness appearing on her face, probably reminiscing about her deceased children. To be honest, at her age, life was mostly about memories.

Samuel Swift inadvertently glared at Franklin Young. Although he didn’t understand what Franklin Young had said, just looking at the Queen’s expression, he knew this guy had really upset her.

Franklin Young, however, stood there calmly and said nothing. To be honest, he also felt he was taking a bit of a risk. Here he was, bringing up her most painful memories right on her birthday—if she had a breakdown, that would be bad. Although Victoria couldn’t just order him executed like Consort Yi might have, she could certainly make things difficult for Consort Yi if she was displeased. But if he didn’t do this, it would be hard to make a deep impression on her. If she forgot about him in a couple of days, wouldn’t all his efforts be wasted?

“Thank you to your Empress Dowager for this gift. It makes me feel the sincerity of your country’s friendship.” But Queen Victoria quickly regained her composure and calmly expressed her thanks to Samuel Swift.

That was enough. She couldn’t possibly ask Franklin Young to demonstrate his medical skills right then and there, so the two of them soon withdrew together. As soon as they stepped outside, Samuel Swift stared at Franklin Young and asked, “What exactly did you say? Why did the Queen of England lose her composure like that?”

“Nothing much. I just told her I could cure hemophilia and diphtheria,” Franklin Young shrugged nonchalantly.

“What are hemophilia and diphtheria?”

“Haemophilia is what we call ‘blood disease’—it’s a hereditary terminal illness. Queen Victoria lost two sons to it, and four years ago her youngest son died of it not long after getting married. As for diphtheria, I think it’s called ‘lock-throat wind’ in Chinese medicine. Her second daughter and a granddaughter died of it,” Franklin Young said blandly.

Samuel Swift was so angry he almost spat in his face.

“Do you know what day it is today? She’s celebrating her birthday and you go stabbing her right in the heart?” the old man practically roared.

“How else would she remember me? Besides, I really can cure these diseases,” Franklin Young said with a grin.

Samuel Swift’s just-settled mind was instantly shocked again.

“You can cure blood disease?” he said in disbelief.

“I can treat the symptoms but not the root cause. This is a disease carried from the womb, and medicine can hardly cure it completely, but it can save lives. As for ‘lock-throat wind,’ it can be completely cured with Tianyi Shengshui,” Franklin Young said.

“How many diseases can you actually cure?” Samuel Swift didn’t have time to argue anymore and asked directly.

“Oh, I can’t really say for sure. Anyway, if you ever get sick, just come to me first,” Franklin Young said modestly.

His goal for this trip had already been achieved. It was enough to make the old lady Victoria firmly remember that there was a doctor at the Chinese embassy who could cure all sorts of incurable diseases. When the time came, she would remember him. Even if she didn’t, the people around her would.

“Not bad, just like this. But it still feels like something’s missing!” A few days later, on the bustling Oxford Street in London, wearing a tall top hat and holding his carbon fiber diamond-encrusted cane, Franklin Young stood contentedly in front of a three-story building painted bright red.

Now that he had enough funds in hand, Boss Young naturally wanted to get his Jinyuan Company up and running as soon as possible. In fact, this had been his main focus these past few days.

After looking for a while, he finally realized what was missing.

“Go get a pair of big red lanterns to hang at the door,” Boss Young said to the guy in charge of his renovations.

“Mr. Yang, we have street lamps here. I don’t think we need lanterns,” said the short, chubby man named Woolf.

“Go find a Chinese person, or someone familiar with China, and you’ll know what I want. Also, remember to put electric lights inside them,” Franklin Young said.
