Chapter 9

After a short while, the cheers finally died down. Then, those who had been hiding began to appear one by one. This time, it was Henry Clark's turn to be surprised again. He was now certain there was nothing wrong with his eyes—what he saw here were not double images, but truly many pairs of twins.

To be precise, every person Henry Clark saw appeared in duplicate. In other words, everyone present was a twin. Each pair of twins stood together in twos, watching from a distance. Even the old man who had just been in front of Henry Clark was the same. If it weren’t for the slight differences in the tattered clothes they wore, he really wouldn’t have been able to tell which one had just appeared before him.

However, the behavior of these people greatly puzzled Henry Clark. Although the arrival of a lord had made them cheer with excitement, at this moment they were all timid and cautious, looking on with delight but not daring to come forward.

Henry Clark frowned and could only wave at the old man who had just come out, signaling for him to approach. This time, the old man acted very unfamiliar, taking a few steps forward but keeping a wide berth from Henry Clark, as if there was something about Henry Clark that frightened him. Standing at a distance, he asked, “Sir, do you have any orders?”

“Why are you standing so far away? Come a bit closer,” Henry Clark asked directly, not understanding.

“Sir, we’re all twins!” the old man replied in confusion. Seeing that Henry Clark still looked completely baffled, he called out again, “Cursed twins!”

Chapter Four: The Twins’ Misfortune (Part One)

“What’s wrong with being twins?” As a modern person, Henry Clark had no concept of discrimination in his mind. He even muttered, “How rare are twins? At the very least, it’s double the joy for the parents! How could it be a curse?”

“Sir?” The old man didn’t hear Henry Clark’s muttering. Seeing Henry Clark standing there looking at a loss, he couldn’t help but feel a jolt of fear and hurriedly called out.

“What’s this about cursed twins?” Henry Clark suddenly realized that the original owner of this body was truly a bookworm—or perhaps a magic-obsessed nerd. It was obvious there was some story behind the twins, but there was nothing about it in the original memories. Helpless, he could only ask the old man across from him.

The old man still kept his distance, not daring to come closer. Hearing Henry Clark’s question and seeing his confused expression, he understood that Henry Clark really didn’t know. Still, this reaction made the old man fully realize why a lord would appear here—it turned out to be a clueless young man. He wondered if, after learning the truth, Henry Clark would leave again.

“Sigh!” The old man could only let out a long sigh and began to explain to Lord Henry Clark. No matter what, Henry Clark was still his lord. “Sir, all of us twins are born because of a god’s curse. Anyone who comes into contact with us will be afflicted with misfortune.”

With the old man’s patient explanation, Henry Clark finally understood what this so-called curse was about. It turned out that, in this world, twins were basically seen as the embodiment of a misfortune curse—anyone who came into contact with them would be cursed with bad luck.

After hearing such nonsense, Henry Clark really didn’t know what to say. Ignorance truly is the greatest original sin. In this world, people had no idea what twins really were. When two identical people were suddenly born, if something unlucky happened by coincidence, it was immediately blamed on the twins. That’s why twins were misunderstood as the embodiment of a curse.

Apparently, in the world he came from, a long time ago, twins were also considered an ominous sign. But in this world, things were even worse. Because of this inexplicable reason, twins across the entire continent were misunderstood. Whenever twins were born, even their parents would see it as a bad omen, and usually, the fate of twins was abandonment. This Yellow Sands Town was the region on the continent where abandoned twins were sent.

Seeing the young lord standing there in silence after hearing the whole story, with an unreadable expression, the old man felt extremely uneasy. He was truly worried—first, that the lord would leave immediately after learning the truth, and second, that if the lord didn’t leave, what would happen if they brought misfortune upon him?

“So that’s how it is.” Henry Clark quickly understood why these people were so eager for a lord to arrive, yet so cautious not to get too close. It seemed that, although these people had been abandoned by the world, at least they still had kind hearts.

“Are there only this many people here?” As he spoke, Henry Clark walked forward, wanting to get closer to the old man. Unexpectedly, this action caused the old man to let out a low cry and hurriedly retreat.

Seeing this, Henry Clark stopped moving forward and stood where he was, repeating his earlier question. This time, everyone who had come out heard the lord’s question.
