The old woman was slightly surprised when she heard this. She glanced at Henry Foster and said, “You saved her?”
As she spoke, her gaze, full of doubt, shifted to the little girl, her expression questioning.
The little girl seemed a bit shy. After hesitating slightly, she gently nodded, actually admitting that what Henry Foster said was true.
The expressions on the faces of the old woman in black and the maid in green instantly became rather interesting.
For the two of them, the situation wasn’t hard to figure out. Just a few questions and they already had a good idea of what had happened. They couldn’t help but find it a bit amusing. Of course, they knew that those two demon wolves couldn’t possibly harm their young lady. But this wild boy, who had appeared out of nowhere, actually had the guts to step in and save someone in front of two red-backed demon wolves—he really was quite bold!
“Where are you from? Why are you here?”
The maid in green frowned at Henry Foster, asking suspiciously.
A chill ran through Henry Foster’s heart. He put on an honest look and said in a low voice, “I… I’m from Niutou Village. I was hungry, so I came into the mountains to set traps for wild rabbits, and then I saw wolves… wolves trying to eat her…”
The old woman frowned slightly. “What are you doing trapping rabbits in these wild mountains? Where are your parents?”
Henry Foster shook his head and said, “I don’t have any parents!”
The maid in green and the old woman in black exchanged a glance. Both of them possessed cultivation, so they could tell at a glance that Henry Foster was just an ordinary mortal with no cultivation at all. On top of that, Henry Foster was born with an honest-looking face and wore shabby clothes. Hearing his words now, and seeing the many scrapes and bloodstains from tumbling down the hillside, he looked especially pitiful in the night.
“He really does have a chivalrous heart!”
The old woman in black frowned slightly and said, “There are still people from Wild Ridge Cave who haven’t been wiped out, and the mountains are full of monsters. If we leave him here, he’ll die sooner or later. We might as well take him with us!”
The maid in green was quite badly injured, but she still frowned slightly at these words and said, “Protecting the young lady is the most important thing!”
The old woman in black glanced at her and said, “I know what I’m doing!”
The maid in green suddenly understood something and said no more.
Having made up their minds, the old woman picked up the little girl, while the maid in green casually conjured a cloud, lifting Henry Foster onto it as well. The cloud rose up, and in the darkness of night, they flew away, disappearing from the wild mountains in the blink of an eye.
Lying on the soft, fluffy cloud, Henry Foster stuck his head out to look down. The trees below flashed by quickly, and he felt a faint excitement in his heart.
Who would have thought that just by bragging to the people in town, he’d actually run into immortals?
This was great—he’d latched onto the thigh of an immortal! If he could learn a couple of spells and go back, who in town would dare look down on him?
Zhang the butcher’s pork head, Old Lady Wang’s chickens—wouldn’t he be able to eat whatever he wanted?
……
……
This young boy, Henry FosterMr. Foster, who ran wild through the mountains at such a young age, came from Niutou Village, thirty li away. But although he grew up in Niutou Village, he wasn’t born there. Ten years ago, he was brought there by an immortal…
…That’s what the people of Niutou Village had always told Henry Foster: he was brought by an immortal.
It was said that ten years ago, on a certain day, the people of Niutou Village had just finished eating and drinking and were, as usual, gossiping to pass the time. Suddenly, dark clouds gathered over the small town, thunder rumbled, and from within the clouds, a white-bearded old immortal descended on a cloud, holding a tiny baby in his arms.
The old immortal seemed to be in a hurry, and it was said there were even bloodstains on him. He arrived in the town, and, facing the townsfolk who had all fallen to their knees, instructed, “Take good care of him. I’ll be back to fetch him in as little as three days, or as long as half a month!”
With that, the old immortal hurriedly put the baby down and flew off on his cloud once more.
Everyone in town was dumbfounded, staring at the little baby sleeping soundly in his swaddling clothes.
That little baby, of course, was the present-day Henry FosterMr. Foster.
The townsfolk, having received the immortal’s instructions, didn’t dare slack off. After all, there were too many legends about immortals in this world.
Those mighty figures with supernatural powers—weren’t they all capable of earth-shaking feats? Their words carried more weight than the emperor’s. If they casually bestowed an elixir, it might cure someone’s chronic ailments or even clear up a face full of pockmarks.
And if such an old immortal got angry…
…There were plenty of stories about entire kingdoms being wiped out for offending an immortal.
So the people of Niutou Village immediately treated Henry FosterMr. Foster with the utmost care. They found three strong wet nurses and even a milk cow to look after him, tending to him with trembling reverence, afraid to let him come to any harm—serving him even more diligently than their own ancestors.
At first, they thought that after three or five days, the old immortal would return and take the young master away. Maybe, if he was pleased, he’d grant them some immortal fate, or at least turn a few stones into gold for everyone to share. So, at first, the people of Niutou Village were quite happy about it!
But who could have guessed that three days passed, and the old immortal didn’t come…
Half a month passed, and still no sign of the old immortal…
…Could it be that even an immortal’s word couldn’t be trusted?
The people of Niutou Village were at a loss, staring at the now chubbier baby, not knowing what to do!
