Chapter 18

Following the sound of a lighter, Logan Bennett saw a man dressed like a migrant worker. But even with a change of clothes, Logan Bennett could still recognize him.

It was that man looking for the guinea pig!

The little mutt had just noticed a stranger nearby and started barking furiously at him.

Logan Bennett curled his lip. You glutton, what’s the point of barking now?

But the little mutt didn’t persist for long. Under the man’s gaze, it tucked its tail and ran off.

Logan Bennett didn’t dare run. He wasn’t confident he could get away.

Better to stay put and see what this guy wanted, or maybe pretend not to know him? After all, there are plenty of black cats in the world. Logan Bennett pondered.

The man blew a smoke ring and looked at Logan Bennett, saying, “Even without your cat tag, I’d still recognize you. Seriously, how mean—teasing a puppy like that.”

Damn, he really isn’t easy to fool!

Logan Bennett tugged at his ear, muscles tensed. Even though the man’s aura seemed calm now, Logan Bennett’s first impression of him was so bad that he couldn’t let his guard down.

The man smoked, making some idle small talk, then suddenly asked, “Were you here all last night? Did you see anyone strange?”

Someone strange? Could he mean the guy in the hoodie?

“Knew it, you’ve seen him!”

Warren Lee could tell from the subtle changes in the cat’s eyes and expression that he’d gotten his answer. He’d only asked as a test, not really expecting to get any useful info from this cat, but to his surprise, the cat had actually seen something!

“Alright, I won’t ask much else. I just want to know what that guy did, or if he hid anything?” Warren Lee held his cigarette in his mouth, spreading his hands to show he meant no harm.

Logan Bennett thought for a moment, then nodded his chin toward the rundown tile-roofed house.

“Thanks!”

Just as Logan Bennett was about to make his escape, Warren Lee, who was heading toward the tile-roofed house, called out, “Don’t go yet, I still have some questions for you. If you run, I’ll just catch you again, believe it or not?”

Logan Bennett saw a flash of silver, and a thin metal shard was suddenly stuck in the road ahead.

Logan Bennett stared at the still-quivering metal shard in front of his paw, twitched his whiskers, squatted down, and flicked the shard with his paw, full of amazement. He glanced sideways at the man by the tile-roofed house, thinking, how could something that guy in the hoodie spent so long hiding be found so easily?

Five minutes later, Warren Lee was holding a brown glass jar in his gloved hand, and a phone in the other.

“Hello, I’ve got some good news for you… I said, I’ve got some good news… Can you hear me? Hello… hello… I’m saying, on your end… damn!”

He’d just hung up when the phone started ringing again.

“Hello… I’m saying, there’s a clue here… hello…”

A location description and summary of events took ten minutes, repeated over and over. Even Logan Bennett felt exhausted just listening.

Logan Bennett roughly estimated that in those ten minutes, the man spent most of the time saying three words—“hello, hello,” and then “damn.”

Warren Lee finally finished explaining, tossed the phone into his pocket like he was freed, and muttered, “Damn, stupid old cell phone!”

Seeing Logan Bennett still squatting there, Warren Lee nodded, “Come with me. Don’t even think about running, or I’ll go block you at Chuhua University. You actually live over there, right? I don’t believe you’ll never go back.”

Logan Bennett: “……” This trip out is seriously a pain in the ass!

“You wait here, I’ll go get the car.” With that, Warren Lee ran off with the jar.

Logan Bennett waited for two or three minutes, then saw the man bumping along the rocky path, riding over on a pink-painted women’s bicycle.

This is the “car” this big guy “drives”?!

Chapter 11: Rolling Around? Acting Cute? Screw That!

The experience of riding in the bike basket over the rocky dirt road… Logan Bennett really didn’t want to remember it.

As soon as they reached the destination Warren Lee mentioned, Logan Bennett quickly jumped out of the basket, so dizzy he almost toppled over.

This was a two-story house, surrounded by private residential homes. But this area was also slated for demolition, so many houses were empty, with big “demolish” characters painted on the walls and tall advertising boards hanging around.

The high-tech zone was expanding outward, so this area’s demolition was inevitable. Within ten years, it would be covered by newly built high-tech enterprises.

Warren Lee opened the door, pushed the bike inside, rummaged through the fridge, grabbed a handful of beef cubes, and sat on the sofa watching TV and eating, ignoring Logan Bennett.

Logan Bennett looked around, jumped onto the coffee table, pulled the beef cubes over from Warren Lee’s side, tore open the wrapper, and started eating. On the way here, Warren Lee had said that after finishing up, he’d ride over to Chuhua University and drop Logan Bennett off, so Logan Bennett wasn’t in a hurry to leave… not that he could anyway.

Ten minutes later, the door opened and a man in a police uniform walked in.

Seeing Logan Bennett, the man said to Warren Lee in surprise, “Where’d you pick up a cat? I’m not keeping it! You know I’d rather have a dog than a cat!”

“No need, it’s someone else’s. I’ll return it tomorrow.” Warren Lee peeled off a beef cube, tossed it into his mouth, and handed the glass jar to the man.
