The man didn’t say much, put on his gloves, and took the glass jar to the bathhouse. After a while, he came out holding a small bag. The bag was transparent, so you could see what was inside.
Jade, diamonds, gold rings...
Although it was just a small bag, it was worth quite a lot.
“Did you see anyone?” the man asked.
Warren Lee shook his head and pointed at Logan Bennett. “This cat found it.”
“Tch, as if! Stop making things up!” The man clearly didn’t believe it, then changed the subject: “So, what else did you find? I couldn’t hear clearly on the phone... You really should replace that old cell phone of yours, so you don’t lose contact once you leave the central district.”
Warren Lee described the situation at the old tile-roofed house. “They deliberately spread chemicals around to keep livestock away, but it doesn’t kill the weeds. The nearby residents have all been busy moving out lately, so no one would bother looking into those weed-filled abandoned houses. This bag was hidden well, and the traces around it were cleaned up pretty thoroughly—very careful... This isn’t the first time that person has done something like this.”
“Of course it’s not the first time. That person’s already got several lives on their hands, they’re experienced at this. Only you could find it—if it were any of my guys, even if they circled that old house all day, they wouldn’t find a single hair.” The man in the police uniform flicked the bag in his hand, thought for a moment, and handed a folder to Warren Lee.
“A man?” Warren Lee frowned as he looked at the information in his hand. This was different from what he’d suspected—he’d always thought the only female among the suspects was the one.
“The result from the new equipment the bureau bought—how could it be fake?” The policeman patted Warren Lee on the shoulder. “Alright, I really have to thank you for helping us find this evidence. We’ve already got people watching the place. If anything happens, we’ll let you know. By the way, you’ve been discharged for three years now, your injuries are healed, so hurry up and find something to do. Don’t just wander around all day. Whether you want to join the police or start a company, you’ve got the connections and the capital.”
Warren Lee lit a cigarette, raised his arm to rest behind his head, and leaned back on the sofa. “Lazy.”
“Bullshit!” The policeman grabbed the folder and smacked him with it, too annoyed to keep talking about it. Instead, he looked at Logan Bennett, who was using his furry paw to poke at the beef snack wrapper on the coffee table. “This cat’s pretty smart, but compared to the old master’s lynx...”
Halfway through, the policeman stopped himself.
“Why did I bring that up!”
“Why did you bring that up!”
The two spoke almost at the same time.
Just thinking about the way that lynx looked at people, exactly like their master, made both of them uneasy. That was also why Warren Lee wasn’t too surprised by all of Logan Bennett’s unusual behavior.
Rubbing the goosebumps on his arm, Warren Lee kicked the policeman. “Senior brother, you should get back to work. These cases are enough to keep you busy.”
“True,” the policeman packed up his things, his face looking serious but his tone smug. “If I don’t solve these cases, I’d be embarrassed to get promoted.”
“Narcissism is an illness, you should get it treated.”
“Haven’t you read the papers? Only narcissists can be leaders—Napoleon, Roosevelt, Stalin, Edison, Carnegie, Rockefeller, Ford, even Hitler—they all had the same narcissistic traits.” As he spoke, the policeman whistled and walked out. Before leaving, he added, “Don’t bother returning my daughter’s bicycle. Just buy a new one to replace it when the time comes. Her birthday’s coming up, you know—make sure it’s a foldable one.”
Logan Bennett had been pawing at the beef snacks the whole time, but his ears were pricked, listening to the two men’s conversation. It seemed neither of them were ordinary, and they even came from the same school.
After the policeman left, Warren Lee made a bowl of instant noodles, grabbed a handful of beef snacks and put them on the coffee table, then said to Logan Bennett, “I’m going to catch up on some sleep. If you’re hungry, eat the beef snacks—there’s nothing else for you. Also, you’d better not go outside. This place isn’t like where you used to stay. Do you know why there are no cats or dogs around here? The construction workers caught them all and cooked them. There are plenty of people who want to eat ‘Dragon-Tiger Fight’. With your skills, you could only bully a little stray dog.”
Logan Bennett: “...”
After spending a night in this dangerous neighborhood, the next day, Warren Lee packed up some clothes and other things, and rode a bicycle toward Chuhua University. Logan Bennett once again squatted in the basket of the pink ladies’ bicycle. The good thing was, as they got closer to the city, the roads became smoother. Other than the wind being a bit uncomfortable, everything else was fine—if you ignored certain people’s nagging.
From the moment they set out until they reached the street where Chuhua University was located, Warren Lee kept criticizing Logan Bennett for all sorts of things. “Poor jumping ability, slow reactions, hearing’s so bad you’re like a pig—someone can walk right up next to you and you wouldn’t notice...”
Logan Bennett really wanted to argue back, but unfortunately, he couldn’t. When he opened his mouth, all that came out was a strange cat’s meow. So along the way, passersby saw this scene: a man riding a ladies’ bicycle, talking nonstop, and every couple of sentences, the cat in the basket would meow back. It looked like the man and the cat were having an argument.
It took at least two hours to ride from the new tech development zone to Chuhua University. Logan Bennett noticed that Warren Lee didn’t even seem tired.
