Chapter 7

Stepping outside, Jessica and Crystal Princess were right at the door, while The Johnson Couple greeted The King Couple and started chatting, making space for the children. Mark King walked up, picked up Little Crystal, gently kissed her on the cheek, and asked, “Is our Crystal Princess here to see Oppa off?”

“Wood, are you going to Korea for summer camp? Will you miss me at summer camp?” Crystal Princess must have gotten a hint from her mom and dad.

“Crystal is so smart, I am indeed going to Korea for summer camp. Don’t worry, how could I ever forget our Little Princess? I’ll take you out to play during Thanksgiving.” Mark King’s words made Little Crystal happy, and she clapped her hands to show she agreed. So Mark King took the opportunity to put the little girl down.

“Wood, you’re going to Korea to shoot a movie, right?” Compared to five-year-old Crystal, ten-year-old Jessica was much more carefree. After hearing that Mark King was going back to Korea to film a movie, she actually excitedly made a list, asking Mark King to bring her autographs from Korean celebrities, and also to hurry back to Los Angeles before her midterm exams next semester to tutor her. Well, the US also has midterm and final exams, but compared to Asian parents, parents of other ethnicities don’t seem to pay much attention to this. Considering this girl’s level, Mark King could only silently mourn for her in his heart.

Two hours later, just before Mark King was to be handed over to the flight attendants who would look after him, he grabbed Helen King’s hand, then pulled a slip of paper from his pocket and handed it to his dad. It was a lottery ticket. Wood told his poor dad that this ticket, betting on the Spurs to win the championship, could be used as his private stash. Helen King was so moved that he shed tears on the spot.

At this time, the new millennium had not yet arrived, and there were no tablets or the like on planes, nor were there any decent smartphone games, so Mark King could only read the newspaper for a while before pulling the blanket over his head and sleeping until he woke up naturally. After waking, looking at the clouds outside the window, Mark King couldn’t help but follow the direction the plane was flying, all the way to China? Twelve years was enough to make him forget some things, but there were also things that even twelve years couldn’t erase. But there was nothing he could do—things and people over there were probably all different now.

So, in a daze, Mark King finally set foot on the land of Seoul. It wasn’t his first time in Korea, or in Seoul, but it was the first time he felt this way.

Coming to pick up Mark King was not only Emily Thompson but also her bearded fiancé Eric Bolton. Emily Thompson was a thoughtful person, and she could tell at a glance that this little guy was in low spirits. So, along the way, she didn’t say much about the movie, just handed him the script and reminded him to read it carefully. The morning after next, she would have Eric Bolton pick him up and take him to the set.

Mark King’s grandfather was a senior civil servant, having worked his way up in Korea’s Ministry of Finance for most of his life. Ten years ago, he started serving as a section chief, and last year, at the age of 56, he was promoted an extra level to become a level-four civil servant. In fact, most civil servants retire around the age of 52, but after reaching level five, which is bureau director or section chief in a central department, retirement is usually delayed to around 60, since that’s already a leadership position. Since childhood, Mark King always felt his grandfather looked very dignified, but no matter how dignified, he wouldn’t put on airs in front of his grandson. He had heard early on that his son’s family was moving back to Seoul and was very happy about it, and now that his grandson had arrived early, he was even happier—just a bit emotional knowing that Mark King would be leaving for a movie shoot the morning after next. Mark King once thought his grandfather looked down on the acting profession. That was his ignorance—after all, he was reborn, and in his previous life he was just an ordinary Chinese otaku, knowing only a little about Korea. In this life, he grew up in America, and his understanding of Korea was limited to customs and language. If it weren’t for the fact that in his previous life he happened to know about Crystal and Jessica through Cathy Smith, he might not even have recognized the two little girls.
