Chapter 19

“Brother Michael, I think he’s just a student…”

“Just do what I told you to do and stop with the nonsense!” After being scolded by Michael Bolton, the burly men around shrank their necks in fear and didn’t dare say another word.

For more than two years, Xuesong’s death had always been an unresolved knot in James Carter’s heart. Now that Edward King was dead, James Carter finally felt a sense of relief.

However, after ending it all, he didn’t feel the elation he had imagined. Instead, he was reflecting on whether what he did was right or wrong, and whether he now counted as a murderer.

The next day, James Carter went running to school as usual; it had become his habit.

Just as he was about to reach the school, suddenly, a black sedan drove up and stopped at the roadside, just half a meter away from him. Then, the car door opened, and a deep, magnetic voice came from inside: “Get in.”

James Carter was taken aback. He slowly lowered his head and looked inside the car. There were two people inside: one was the driver, and the other, sitting in the back, was a middle-aged man he had never seen before.

This man was in his forties, dignified in appearance, with a ruddy complexion, wearing gold-rimmed glasses, a crisp gray suit, a properly tied tie, and holding a newspaper in his hand. He looked somewhat like a company executive.

After sizing up the man for a while, James Carter asked in confusion, “Do we… know each other?”

The middle-aged man in the back seat smiled and said, “Your name is James Carter, right?”

James Carter was stunned again. How did he know his name?

As if seeing the question in his mind, the man’s smile deepened. He said, “Not only do I know your name, I also know what you did last night.”

This sentence was like a bomb exploding in James Carter’s heart. His eyes widened in shock, but he quickly regained his composure and shook his head, saying, “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I have to go to school.”

With that, he turned to leave.

The middle-aged man chuckled and said, “I’m afraid you can’t go to school right now. You’ll have to go to the police station instead.”

James Carter’s foot, just about to step away, paused. He turned and stared intently at the man in the car. After a long moment, he asked, “Are you a police officer?”

“Come in and sit.” The man patted the leather seat beside him and smiled at James Carter.

If it’s fate, you can’t avoid it; if it’s trouble, you can’t escape it. James Carter muttered to himself, then bent down and got into the car.

“Close the door.” The man spoke as he placed the newspaper on James Carter’s lap.

James Carter reached back to close the door, then picked up the newspaper from his lap in confusion. Out of the corner of his eye, he caught sight of the shocking headline on the front page: Another Mysterious Murder at an Unfinished Building.

Below the headline was a large photo. Even though much of the photo was pixelated, James Carter could still recognize it as the scene where Edward King had fallen to his death.

“Looks familiar, doesn’t it?” The man looked at the calm-faced James Carter and smiled. “You’re very calm—there’s a composure about you that’s beyond your years, even though inside, you’re already in turmoil.”

“I really don’t know what you’re talking about…”

“If you didn’t know, you wouldn’t have gotten into my car.” The man said confidently.

“Who exactly are you? Are you a cop? If you think I have anything to do with what’s reported in the paper, and you just happen to have evidence, then just arrest me already…”

James Carter spoke impatiently, but before he could finish bluffing, the man took out his phone and handed it to him with a smile. “Take a look.”

Taking the phone, James Carter glanced down. The screen showed a video interface. He instinctively tapped it, and it began playing everything that had happened on the rooftop of the unfinished building the previous night.

What was interesting was that the angle of this video was exactly the same as the one he had used to threaten Edward King.

He was secretly shocked. He had specifically checked around the unfinished building and there were no cameras nearby. So where did this video come from?

He disliked and was unaccustomed to being threatened. Although he still didn’t know the other party’s purpose, his intuition told him it couldn’t be anything good.

He handed the phone back to the man, expressionless, and said, “That’s right, I was indeed present when Edward King was killed. But his death had nothing to do with me. The video is very clear—you should have seen it. He was pushed off the building by someone else. I just happened to be passing by.”

“Heh.” The man laughed in amusement. “A high school student about to take the college entrance exam, out in the middle of the night instead of studying or sleeping at home, running all the way to a place more than ten miles from home, and even going up to the rooftop. That’s a hard story to believe, isn’t it?”

“You can say I was sleepwalking…”

“All right, I don’t want to waste time chatting with you. Since you don’t want to talk, I’ll help you out.” The man said unhurriedly, “You had a grudge with Edward King. Your best friend was pushed off that unfinished building and killed by Edward King.”

He spoke slowly and calmly, but James Carter listened with cold sweat breaking out, his expression growing increasingly unsettled.
