Chapter 5

A swarm of flies buzzed around me, and I immediately felt like my head was about to explode. Back in the car, I had seen with my own eyes how Morgan Wolf and Charles Young were nearly tormented to death by his fly technique—how could I possibly respond to him? No, absolutely not! With that thought, I didn’t dare say another word, clamping my mouth tightly shut.

But I had already said one sentence, which was enough to trigger his urge to talk. Whether I answered or not, he started chattering away incessantly. A barrage of questions, almost tracing back eight generations of my ancestors—he even wanted to know if I wet the bed as a child. I really couldn’t understand why he’d be interested in that. What kid hasn’t wet the bed?

Seeing that I wouldn’t speak, Smart Alec seemed a bit disappointed. He hunched over again, hugging his knees in silence. The rare moment of quiet by my ears made me let out a sigh of relief. But the peace didn’t last long—one sentence from Smart Alec piqued my interest.

“Hey kid, where did you get the Nine Rainbow Divine Pill?”

“Nine Rainbow Divine Pill?” I was stunned, looking at Smart Alec and asking, “What’s that?”

As if disdainful of my ignorance, Smart Alec curled his lips slightly. But seeing that I seemed interested in the question, he didn’t want to give up the chance to talk to me.

“You don’t even know about the Nine Rainbow Divine Pill?”

I shook my head.

“Heh, there’s actually a moving, tear-jerking story behind the Nine Rainbow Divine Pill. It goes like this—”

“Shut up!” Seeing Smart Alec about to launch into a tale, I knew it was bad news and immediately shouted to stop him, “Just get to the point!”

My shout caught Smart Alec off guard. He stared at me, dumbfounded, unable to speak for a while. That strange look made me feel uncomfortable all over. I frowned and said in a low voice, “Are you going to talk or not? If not, I’m going to sleep.”

“I’ll talk, I’ll talk!” After being bored for days, he finally found a topic I was interested in—of course Smart Alec wouldn’t let me off so easily. After thinking for a moment, he said, “Legend has it that before our continent was formed, there were three creator gods in heaven and earth—two men and one woman. Like all clichéd love stories, both male creator gods fell in love with the female creator god, but she didn’t know whom to choose. So, they decided to duel. The power of creator gods is unimaginable—the shockwaves from their duel nearly destroyed the world. To stop them from destroying everything, the female creator god sacrificed her life to absorb the power of the two male creator gods, saving the world. But her own soul was scattered. Before she died, her remaining life energy condensed into the sacred Nine Rainbow Divine Pill… Hey, kid, don’t fall asleep!”

The clichéd plot was so boring I could barely listen, feeling drowsy. Hearing Smart Alec call out, I forced my eyes open and said weakly, “Come on, can’t you talk about something I’m actually interested in? I’m not a kid—are you trying to fool me with this stuff?”

“Heh, don’t rush, let me finish. That female creator god was in charge of all life in this world, so even her remaining life energy would be enough to grant an ordinary person immortality.”

“But she still died, didn’t she?” I said listlessly.

“That’s why it’s just a legend!” Smart Alec was clearly annoyed that I interrupted his story, glaring at me before continuing, “Alright, that’s enough about the legend. Have you heard of the Millennium War of the Realm Gods?”

I nodded without saying anything.

The old man immediately perked up, smiling as he said, “Many people say the Realm Gods’ War was over land, but in truth, its root cause was the Nine Rainbow Divine Pill.”

“Oh? Tell me more!”

“Before the Realm Gods’ War, the four realms were actually quite harmonious. One year, the Demon Realm’s lord was celebrating his hundredth birthday. The Human Realm’s lord somehow got hold of a divine pill, claiming it was the Nine Rainbow Divine Pill, and wanted to gift it to the Demon Realm’s lord. Naturally, the Demon Realm’s lord was delighted. Even though demons live long lives, turning a hundred still made him feel his life was nearing its end. Getting the Nine Rainbow Divine Pill meant immortality, so he swallowed it without hesitation. But right after he did, his body exploded. A flash of rainbow light—and that Demon Realm lord was…”

“Done for?” I asked with interest.

The old guy nodded. “Of course, the Demon Realm wouldn’t stand for that, so they immediately raised an army to attack the Human Realm. Both sides had allies, and thus the Realm Gods’ War began!”

“So that’s how it was. Old man, you’re not making up another story, are you?”

“Of course not! Back when I was a Grand Scholar of the Heavens, I once read a secret court record that said exactly this.”

“Oh, so it really happened!” I nodded, but then asked, “But the Nine Rainbow Divine Pill was already eaten by the Demon Realm’s lord. Could there really be a second one in this world?”
