Volume One: Reborn in Korea

Chapter 1: Reborn in Korea

“Henry Thompson, Henry Thompson, wait up!!”

Korea, Gwangju Science High School. After school, students left campus in groups of three or five. At the entrance of Class 2-3, a ponytailed girl, panting, called out to a boy ahead.

“What is it?”

Henry Thompson turned around, frowning slightly. What met his eyes was a handsome, delicate face, not at all inferior to the flower boys in the hottest idol groups.

The girl was clearly dazzled by such striking good looks, and for a moment, her tone was a bit flustered as she said, “You—you haven’t joined any school club yet. I’m the class president. Everyone else already has a club. You’re the only one left in our class.”

Hearing this, Henry Thompson slung his shoulder bag over his shoulder, waved his hand as he turned away, and said, “Sorry, I have things to do after school. I don’t have time for school clubs.”

The ponytailed girl stomped her foot in frustration but didn’t know what else to say.

A few boys from their class happened to walk by and saw this scene. One of them, a tall boy named George Clark, said to the ponytailed girl with some annoyance, “Jessica, don’t bother with him. Look at how aloof he is. He’s the national Olympiad math champion—of course he’s busy studying.”

Jessica Bennett suddenly remembered that the boy leaving with the shoulder bag was a top student at school. Ever since high school started, he’d been the student representative at every school assembly. Her tone became hesitant: “But, but…”

George Clark nudged a slightly chubby boy next to him. The chubby boy, named David Foster, immediately caught on and said to Jessica Bennett, “Come on, Jessica, today is the release day of Watch’s new MAD! Let’s hurry to the music store.”

George Clark quickly chimed in, “Yeah, Jessica, Watch is hailed as the strongest jungler in this year’s OGN. His MAD debut is sure to be a hot item. Don’t you really like Watch? If we’re late, it’ll be sold out!”

Jessica Bennett looked at Henry Thompson’s departing figure, clearly hesitating for a moment, but in the end decided to buy Watch’s new MAD first.

Henry Thompson obviously heard what his classmates said behind him. He couldn’t help but smile wryly and touch his nose. In his previous life, after a period of utter despair, a bizarre twist of fate brought him to a parallel world with a layout much like his own. What he didn’t expect was to end up in Korea, in the body of a high school prodigy named Henry Thompson, who shared his name. The difference was, in his previous life, he was a complete academic failure. For the sake of a laughable esports dream, he dropped out of high school against his family’s wishes and dove headfirst into the esports scene.

The only thing he could be thankful for was that he did have some talent. The esports game he devoted himself to, League of Legends, saw him quickly rise to the top among all pro players of his era, thanks to his exceptional awareness and mechanics. But just as he was about to win the S Series World Championship, he suddenly received the devastating news that his father had died of a heart attack after waiting for him to come home for so long.

At that moment, countless childhood memories flooded back. Unlike most Chinese families, his was a single-parent household. His parents divorced when he was three, and he lived with his father, who doted on him and protected him as much as possible.

The only time his father ever opposed him was when he decided to drop out of school for esports. At that time, in his rebellious youth, he thought his father’s views were hopelessly old-fashioned. After signing with a club, he slammed the door and left home. He would always remember the look in his father’s eyes as he left—no emotion, but he could read the disappointment there.

So, during his days in the esports scene, he trained harder and longer than anyone else. When he got tired of climbing the Chinese server ladder, he’d go to the Korean server. Soon, several of his smurf accounts were in the top ten of both servers. As for the ID that always topped the leaderboards in both China and Korea, it was always the same: smile. That was his pro ID.

And all of this was for one purpose: to prove himself to his father. I’m right, you’re wrong.

On the eve of the S Series finals, after hearing of his father’s death, he quietly packed his things in the dorm and left. Alone, he wandered the streets of a strange city, his mind replaying everything he’d done in esports over the years—how ridiculous it all seemed.

Prove himself?

Who was there left for him to prove anything to now?
