Chapter 15

David Wright responded and quickly walked into the courtyard.

This was where Charles Wright usually worked. The sun-dried wood was stacked in a special room, so whenever Charles Wright felt inspired, he could bring it out to the yard for processing, crafting all kinds of exquisite furniture or weapons and bows.

At this moment, Charles Wright was holding a saw, measuring something. When he saw his son walk in, he said bluntly, “You, come here and saw these pieces of wood along the lines.”

David Wright blinked his big eyes and said, “Father, didn’t you say before that I couldn’t touch these things until I was twelve?”

Charles Wright replied calmly, “You didn’t have enough strength before. Even if I wanted to teach you, you wouldn’t have been able to handle it and might have hurt yourself. But now you’re much stronger, and it’s time for you to start learning the skills.”

David Wright agreed cheerfully. He walked up to his father, took the saw, and began to imitate what he had seen.

Although he had never done it himself before, growing up in this family, even if he hadn’t eaten pork, he’d seen pigs run—he was no stranger to these things.

However, the difficulty of woodworking was still beyond the boy’s imagination. The saw seemed obedient in his father’s hands, but in his own, it was a bit hard to control.

Fortunately, his strength had increased a lot, and with a bit of effort, he managed to hold the saw steady.

Following the lines his father had drawn on the wood, he slowly moved the saw back and forth. Soon, he had the saw cutting into the wood, and managed to saw all the way to the end of the board, sticking as close to the center line as possible.

But unfortunately, without realizing it, the direction he was sawing had already deviated from the intended path.

Glancing up at his father’s expressionless face, David Wright panicked a little and tried hard to bring the saw back to the center line. But unexpectedly, when he used a bit too much force, there was a crisp “crack,” and the saw in his hand snapped.

David Wright awkwardly looked up and said, “Father, the saw broke.”

Charles Wright nodded slowly and said, “Not bad.”

“Not bad?” David Wright looked at his father in confusion, almost doubting his own ears.

“It’s your first time working, and you did quite well.” Charles Wright sighed lightly and said, “When your grandfather taught me by hand, I was a year older than you, and I broke the saw after sawing only a quarter of the board.” He nodded in satisfaction and said, “You have a talent for carpentry. If you can inherit my craft, I’ll be at ease.”

David Wright waved the broken saw in his hand, feeling relieved as well.

Children always hope to gain recognition from adults, especially from those important to them. Such recognition brings them immense joy.

David Wright was no exception. A very happy smile immediately appeared on his face.

Charles Wright hesitated for a moment, then finally took out a black wooden box from behind him and handed it to his son, saying, “Haotian, open it.”

David Wright squinted his eyes slightly. He was not unfamiliar with this wooden box.

This item had always been kept in his father’s room, and his father treated it like a treasure, never allowing anyone to touch it—not even himself.

But children’s minds aren’t that complicated. If he couldn’t figure it out, he just stopped thinking about it.

Taking the wooden box, David Wright let out a surprised exclamation.

The box was unexpectedly heavy, almost as heavy as some metal boxes. However, judging by its appearance and feel, it seemed to be carved from some kind of wood.

Not bothering to study it further, David Wright opened the box, and inside was a thick stack of books.

He glanced at his father, and Charles Wright nodded slowly.

David Wright took out the books—there were three in total. Although he was young, he had learned many characters from his father. With a quick glance, he recognized the titles of the three books.

The first was “A Record of Strange Events Under Heaven,” the second was “Mechanisms and Traps Techniques,” and the third was “Talisman Refining Techniques.”

David Wright frowned in confusion and asked, “Father, what are these?”

Charles Wright didn’t answer directly, but instead asked, “Haotian, do you know why our family’s carpentry skills are so famous far and wide?”

David Wright smiled proudly and said, “That’s because your skills are superb, Father. You can make things that others can’t.”

Shaking his head slightly, Charles Wright sighed and pointed, “Haotian, the skills I use are just minor techniques. The true path lies here.”

Following the direction of Charles Wright’s finger, David Wright looked at the wooden box and exclaimed in surprise, “Father, you learned your skills from these?”

Charles Wright said solemnly, “These three books are secret manuals passed down from our Zheng family ancestors. Their contents are vast and varied. My own skills are just a drop in the ocean, not worth mentioning.”
