"Thank you, Little Jack young master, thank you, Little Jack young master!" The gatekeeper kowtowed again, but once more Jack Harper dodged out of the way.
The girl was a bit surprised by Jack Harper's way of handling things. She had thought Jack Harper would definitely press the advantage and not let things go; she was even ready to step in and stop him. But unexpectedly, Jack Harper just let the matter drop.
After the guards and the gatekeeper had both stepped aside, the girl glanced at Jack Harper and said, "You're acting strange today. You actually dared to hit someone at the Yue family gate, and you didn't take the opportunity to push things further. Did someone hit you on the head too hard?"
His head was bleeding—anyone could see he'd been struck.
"You should say I was hit back to normal. You're heading out, right? Then you should get going early. I won't hold you up," Jack Harper said to the girl.
"Yeah, I'm going to Longji Mountain for training with someone else. I won't be home for a few days." The girl nodded and left, not giving Jack Harper a chance to say anything else.
Jack Harper waved goodbye, then turned and went into the inner room.
After both Jack Harper and the girl had left, the guards started blaming the gatekeeper Old Howard.
"How is this my fault? Who knew that useless guy would suddenly go crazy and hit someone today? And just my luck, Miss Claire Benson happened to be passing by. If it had been anyone else, they would've helped us beat up that loser too," the gatekeeper Old Howard said, looking very innocent.
"Yeah, Miss Claire Benson is actually pretty good to her stepbrother. Today was just your bad luck, but that's your problem. Tonight, you treat the brothers to dinner, or this isn't over!"
In the Yue family, there were only three people who were good to Jack Harper: his father, his stepmother, and his stepsister Claire York—the one from just now.
When Jack Harper's father married into the Yue family, his stepmother had already been engaged before. Her first husband had also married into the Yue family, but died during a Yue family mission, leaving behind the stepmother and her one-year-old daughter.
Three years later, the stepmother met Jack Harper's father. But it wasn't a chance encounter—it was a reunion. They had once been classmates at the same academy and had a bit of a thing for each other, with rumors that they'd been together before.
Years later, they met again: one had lost her husband, the other his wife. These two—no, these old lovers—got together.
At that time, Jack Harper was still an infant, and so he was brought into this reconstituted family, gaining a stepmother and a stepsister. The stepmother was quite capable and held a high position in the Yue family, and the stepsister was even more impressive—the family's top genius, with potential that might break through the heavens.
But unfortunately, the father and son were both considered losers: one a good-for-nothing living off a woman, the other a good-for-nothing being cared for by another good-for-nothing.
"Other than being handsome, this guy has no other strengths. No wonder his dad can get by on his looks. Maybe I can do the same in the future," Jack Harper sighed to himself after taking a bath and looking at his reflection in the mirror.
"Luckily, that injury from earlier... huh? It looks like the wound is gone, not even a scar left. Could it be that I've become immortal?" Jack Harper suddenly noticed something—the wound on his head had disappeared, and there wasn't even a scar. If not for a patch of bare scalp, he'd have thought he remembered the spot wrong.
Let's try cutting myself!
"Damn, I'm such an idiot!"
After slashing himself, Jack Harper immediately jumped up—the cut was a bit deep and a bit long, and it hurt like hell.
Blood gushed out!
"Maybe I should stop the bleeding and put on some medicine first!"
The bleeding stopped, but the wound remained!
"Maybe it just needs some time!"
Half an hour later, the wound was still there.
"Heh, looks like it was just a temporary buff from transmigrating. Now I'm a complete idiot," Jack Harper cursed himself as he looked at the wound on his arm, berating himself for being so stupid as to believe he was immortal.
Still, if only it were true!
Alright, enough of these impossible thoughts. Time to get my head straight. What I need to do now is cultivate star power. This good-for-nothing playboy basically never cultivated, and is still just a level one Star Disciple.
No doubt about it, Star Disciple is the lowest rank in this world, and level one is the very bottom. In other words, he's just a bit stronger than an ordinary person—and that's only because he could eat star beast meat in the Yue family.
There are two main ways to gain star power: the first is cultivation, and the second is eating star beast meat. If you combine both, the effect is even better.
But clearly, the old Jack Harper never combined the two. He basically relied on eating star beast meat. Otherwise, he wouldn't still be a level one Star Disciple—at the very least, he should be level two or three.
So, should I start cultivating now?
No, that's too soon. I'm worried this guy's cultivation technique might have issues. Who knows if he even learned it properly? To be safe, I'll go to the academy tomorrow and find a technique.
It's not like one day will make a difference. Besides, I need to take it easy and figure out what the hell is going on!
Better get some sleep. Maybe when I wake up tomorrow, I'll be back on my own spring mattress, comfy in bed, browsing my phone...
