Chapter 9

That's right, I'm exactly the kind of person who gets so absorbed that I forget to eat or sleep. Even at night, I keep reading. However, the library closes at five in the afternoon, and then the star array protecting the library is activated. After that, no one can enter, and those inside can't get out either.

Legend has it that on this particular night, someone passing by the library heard a mournful voice, which made them quicken their pace and leave, pretending they hadn't heard anything. Afterward, an incredible mystery arose at the academy: the vengeful spirit of the library.

"Let me out!!"

……

Three days later, at the main gate of the Yue family, James York instructed the gatekeeper on one thing: if you see Jack Harper return, don't let him go out again. Then he left after dropping one sentence.

"This damn freeloader actually decided to disappear!!"

For these three days, Jack Harper had gone missing. Honestly, no one really cared about his disappearance—he was just a useless freeloader, and even if he never showed up again, it wouldn't matter.

However, three days ago he had dedicated a song to Ethan Clark and received Ethan Clark's autograph, and this had started to become known. All of Ethan Clark's fans were now desperate to get their hands on that piece of clothing.

Especially since, during her performance that day, Ethan Clark sang that very song. Compared to Jack Harper's version, hers was worlds apart, and the song instantly became a citywide hit. Ethan Clark even hinted that she wanted to meet Jack Harper again, so Jack Harper immediately became the person everyone in the city was looking for.

But even after searching the entire city, no one could find any trace of Jack Harper. Today, Ethan Clark was about to leave by train, and Jack Harper still hadn't appeared. In fact, everyone had forgotten one place: the library. Jack Harper had never left the library at all.

From the first day he was accidentally locked inside, he simply continued reading in the library, planning to finish all the books before leaving. He thought one more day would be enough, but things weren't as simple as he imagined. This was, after all, the library of the King’s Academy of the Mirage Dragon Kingdom, with an extremely rich collection. In the later sections, some bookshelves were even joined together and had to be rolled out.

Actually, the books in the back weren't that important—many were duplicates or things you'd never use in your life, so he could have skipped them. But Jack Harper was still a bit excited. With a mind like his, why not make use of it?

Besides, everyone has a bit of OCD. After flipping through so many books, even knowing the later ones weren't very useful, you'd still keep going. At that point, it was just about flipping through books for the sake of it, not to expand your knowledge—just pure page-turning.

Chapter 7: Why Must You Force Me to Act

When Jack Harper appeared in the library, the librarian was startled. When did this kid get here? I just opened the doors, and no one has come in today. It's early morning, it's a holiday, and everyone's gone to see Ethan Clark off—who would come here?

Jack Harper had no idea about the librarian's surprise, nor did he know that today was the day Ethan Clark was leaving. He headed straight back to the Yue family.

"Stop right there!"

When he got back to the Yue family, Jack Harper was stopped at the gate by the gatekeeper, Old Howard.

"You, come here!"

Jack Harper waved at the gatekeeper, Old Howard.

The gatekeeper, Old Howard, was startled and kept his distance from Jack Harper. "What do you want? I'm not looking for you today—Young Master James is. He just gave orders: you can't go out."

"Come here, I promise I won't hit you!" Jack Harper said with a smile.

"No, I'm not coming over. You'll definitely hit me." The gatekeeper, Old Howard, refused. With no one around to back him up, if Jack Harper beat him up, it would be for nothing.

Jack Harper couldn't be bothered with the gatekeeper, Old Howard, and went straight back to his place to shower, change, and rest.

After Jack Harper left, the gatekeeper, Old Howard, got scolded by the guards.

"Seriously, what's wrong with you? He wasn't even trying to go out—why did you have to say that? If you want to suck up to Young Master James, at least do it in front of him."

……

In the bathroom, Jack Harper lay in a bathtub filled with hot water. This bathtub was high-end—it could generate water currents and control the temperature. Clearly, it was a mechanical device that ordinary people couldn't afford.

It was originally meant for his cheap sister and stepmother; he was just taking advantage of it.

So comfortable, so comfortable I feel like singing. Who cares if it's off-key? As long as I enjoy it, that's enough. And as for you-know-who, don't you dare rate my singing.

Come on, take a bath—there's plenty of time!

Come on, scrub away—there's plenty of dirt!

Come on, change the water—there's plenty of energy!

……

While Jack Harper was amusing himself, he had no idea that his singing skills were gradually improving, and his voice was getting better and better. In the end, he could even imitate the original singer's voice and skill. He only realized this much later—turns out he really was a singing god, a master of a hundred voices.

At this point, he didn't know that everyone feels the same way about themselves—that they're a singing god. So in his own mind, he was just someone who couldn't carry a tune and sang terribly, rarely showing off his voice in front of others.
