Chapter 9

Using the Proud Dragon Technique, Brian Carter wondered if, just like with internal energy, he could channel it to his feet to increase his speed. With this thought, Brian Carter immediately directed his energy to his legs. Although at first he wasn’t quite sure how to channel the energy or apply force, with Brian Carter’s quick mind, he soon figured it out. Gradually, Brian Carter picked up speed. His movement technique became more and more proficient, allowing him to leap up and down, darting through the trees. He also slowly widened the distance between himself and the kitten.

Just as Brian Carter thought he was saved this time, the kitten suddenly burst into flames, let out a “meow,” and sped up to chase Brian Carter. Brian Carter was startled by the flames, and almost laughed at the “meow”—even its cry was that of a cat. But this kind of cat was really not cute at all; I miss the cats on Earth, they were so adorable.

With the kitten speeding up, Brian Carter no longer had time for random thoughts and could only run for his life with all his battle energy.

This perverse cat could even transform into a full-fire form like a fire phoenix. Am I really going to be burned to death by a kitten playing with fire? I wonder if calling 119 would help right now—haha, what am I even thinking? Clearly, multitasking still has its flaws. Brian Carter, out of habit, started daydreaming again while running away. But in his heart, he was still calculating how to escape this predicament.

“Water.” Brian Carter muttered unconsciously. I remember there’s a waterfall ahead—let’s see if this fire cat is afraid of water. Now, Brian Carter knew that if this didn’t work, he’d die again. He realized his battle energy was almost depleted.

When Brian Carter reached the edge of the waterfall, the flaming kitten was less than a meter behind him. Without thinking, Brian Carter gathered all his battle energy into his legs and used all his strength to leap toward the waterfall.

The kitten saw him jump but didn’t follow.

“Haha, you’re afraid of water.” Brian Carter cheered inwardly.

But just as Brian Carter was secretly delighted, the kitten shot out a fireball. Maybe it didn’t have time to prepare, so the fireball wasn’t as powerful as last time, but it was much faster. As Brian Carter was about to enter the waterfall, the fireball caught up and struck Brian Carter’s back.

Passing through the waterfall, Brian Carter discovered a cave about five meters deep inside, which led to the situation at the beginning. Brian Carter touched his back and found a hole burned in his clothes. He had just been hit by a fireball, but why didn’t he feel anything? Could the waterfall have extinguished the fire? That’s impossible—if the clothes weren’t burned through, how could his back be unharmed?

Brian Carter replayed the recent events and realized that when the fireball hit, his body had absorbed it. No wonder he felt his body recover just now—he thought it was just a reaction to escaping danger. Luckily, the kitten hadn’t used the same attack as at the start. His body calculated that the fireball just now had filled his body with fire element; if it had been any stronger, he would have been burned.

How did this absorption ability come about?? Brian Carter was full of doubts. Actually, this function came with Brian Carter’s soul, not his body—just like when he absorbed soul energy. Magic is also a form of energy. (Don’t ask why Brian Carter’s soul has this function—the protagonist always has to be a bit special.)

Brian Carter glanced at the kitten pacing outside and prayed it would give up and leave. Brian Carter calmed himself and examined the cave he was in: about 2 meters high and over 1 meter wide, with nothing inside and no other exit. If he went out now, he’d still be chased by that cat. If people on Earth who knew me saw me being chased by a kitten, what kind of expression would they have? It’s funny to think about—a magical beast this powerful actually looks and sounds like a cat.

Brian Carter sat down and focused entirely on cultivating his energy, the Proud Dragon Technique circulating rapidly within his body.

The kitten, watching the human inside, was extremely annoyed. It had been sunbathing peacefully, and this human came to disturb its enjoyment. What annoyed it most was that it couldn’t catch up to this human, even though it was the fastest creature in this magical beast forest.

At first, it just wanted to toy with the human and didn’t use its full speed. But later, it found the human was getting faster and faster—he must be toying with me! Of course, the kitten had no idea that Brian Carter was learning to use battle energy to invent his own lightness skill.

When it finally chased at full speed, the human kept creating obstacles, preventing it from using its full speed. Even more infuriating, he kept throwing things at it. At first, Brian Carter threw branches and whatever he could grab, but later he started tossing what he considered junk from his spatial pouch.

Finally, when they reached the clearing around the waterfall, the kitten was delighted, thinking it could burn this hateful human to death. It chased at full speed, and when there was only a little distance left, just as the kitten thought it had finally caught the human and could vent its anger, the human jumped into the waterfall. As a fire-type magical beast, it would never approach a water source—not only would its power be weakened, but it would also feel extremely uncomfortable. Most importantly, the kitten was afraid of water.
