Chapter 3

“The police station’s car”—these five words were like a bone-scraping knife, whistling through the air to slice a person, stabbing straight into Henry Walker’s heart, then piercing his limbs and bones, as if to flay him alive from the inside out, cutting his bones to pieces one slice at a time!

Memories surged forth, crashing into his mind. Seeing the police car speeding toward him, Henry Walker felt as if, in the unseen world, that car carried disaster and calamity meant to destroy him. Even though he tried to stay far away, the disaster still followed him like a shadow, catching up to him here!

In his previous life, when he was driving with the Party and Government Office’s Grace Dawson and got into an accident, it was this very car that rushed over. At the time, he thought he’d met his savior, but unexpectedly, the police station chief dumped a load of blame on him, insisting that he and Grace Dawson were engaging in improper relations in the car. In today’s terms, they were “doing it in the car,” got too carried away, and that’s why they crashed. Not only did they not take him to the hospital, they even detained him.

Back then, the naive Henry Walker thought the truth would eventually come to light. But to his shock, the very next day, everything changed!

The girl Grace Dawson, who had suffered such an unjust accusation, quickly admitted to having improper relations with him, and that it wasn’t even their first time.

This testimony was like a knife viciously stabbing Henry Walker in the back—irrefutable evidence. Henry Walker was completely stunned by the gentle knife from the girl! How cruel, how fatal that blow was—it nearly destroyed him. Was it driven by self-interest, or by hatred? The reason no longer mattered; only the result did.

A month later, because the girl explained their relationship as mutual affection, Henry Walker only received a major demerit, but he was still tormented by all kinds of rumors, beset on all sides. After a serious illness, he was like a once-vigorous tree struck by a sudden frost, left with only withered branches and dead leaves, his spirit and demeanor greatly diminished.

The direct consequence of this scandal was that, from then on, Henry Walker was perpetually depressed, unable to recover, lost all confidence in his career, and, despite his family’s objections, resolutely resigned from all his positions and, without looking back, went to a remote village to spend his life as a humble teacher.

Even though many years had passed in that world, and the once-sensational Henry Walker had long faded from people’s view like chewed-up sugarcane pulp, every time he thought of it, even after more than twenty years, he would wake up in the middle of the night, a stabbing pain in his heart that he could never let go of!

Pain! Real pain, like a venomous snake flicking its tongue, endlessly devouring his heart, his lungs, devouring…

Now reborn, the future would once again follow the same trajectory. But since heaven had given him another chance, was he really going to walk that same unbearable path again?

No, he couldn’t! I absolutely cannot repeat the same mistake. I refuse to become that defeated man who fled in disgrace! A conspiracy had twisted his life beyond recognition; he was unwilling, even afraid, to look back at the road he’d traveled all these years—how desolate, how tragic it was! When he made the decision to resign, he did so with the resolve of facing death!

At this thought, a wave of hatred surged in Henry Walker’s heart, spreading like fog, his chest burning as if on fire, roasting his organs. He seemed to smell the scent of his own flesh charring, the taste of blood rising in his throat, the feeling of thorns of fate piercing his feet. Since heaven has given me another chance, I, Henry Walker, must go forward with a bang, no matter what. I am not the victim of your vicious schemes—I will prove to you that now, you are the losers, and I am the victor!

Henry Walker suddenly felt a salty taste in his throat. The blood that had been suppressed for so long boiled up, fiercely trying to surge out. “Just wait, it’s either the fish dies or the net breaks!” Though his voice sounded calm, it rang powerfully in his ears and heart!

With his blood boiling, Henry Walker suddenly shoved open the car door. The speeding police car screeched to a halt…

Chapter 0002: Strike First to Gain the Upper Hand

From the police car stepped a tall, dark-skinned man in uniform. After glancing at Henry Walker’s car, he strode quickly over.

Henry Walker was not unfamiliar with this man. Just by watching the way he walked, memories long buried in Henry Walker’s heart replayed like an old movie, scene after vivid scene appearing in his mind.

It was this man who brought him to the police station, this man who saddled him with the infamy of fooling around with a colleague in the car, this man who drove him to despair over his career, and this man who caused a complete break with his family… This man was nothing less than the hand of fate in his previous life. A despicable slander completely changed the course of his life.
