Chapter 19

This Old Sam Walker is a farmer from the nearby Wangzhuang Village, and has almost nothing to do with Thomas Thompson. The reason for the dispute is that Old Sam Walker's son was buying things at the market a few days ago. As he passed by the township government, he happened to be chased by Thomas Thompson's dog. In a panic, the young man grabbed a brick and threw it at the dog.

As luck would have it, this scene of the young man scaring the dog with a brick was witnessed by Thomas Thompson, who was out shopping for groceries. Thomas Thompson is extremely fond of his dog, treating it even more dearly than his own parents. Seeing this, he immediately punched Old Sam Walker's son several times. Still not satisfied, he pinned the young man to the ground and beat him until his head was bleeding and two of his front teeth were knocked out, only then did he stop.

When Old Sam Walker learned that his son had been beaten, he was naturally furious. In a fit of anger, he reported Thomas Thompson to the police station. To his great surprise, things only got worse after the report. Thomas Thompson turned the tables, claiming that Old Sam Walker's son was trying to steal his dog, and that he was simply defending himself against a thief. After taking statements, it ended up with Old Sam Walker's son being labeled a dog thief. The police station's decision was: either compensate the victim Thomas Thompson with 200 yuan for emotional distress, or Old Sam Walker's son would be detained according to public security regulations.

“There’s actually something like this? This is pure distortion of right and wrong, it’s infuriating!” Evan Irving was dumbfounded and said angrily.

Seeing Evan Irving's reaction, Henry Walker smiled faintly. This straightforward and outspoken girl has an overabundance of justice; perhaps only after being knocked around by life will she see the reality of today’s society.

“Hmm, do you have your written statement ready?” Henry Walker looked at the furious Old Sam Walker and asked softly.

“Yes, I’ve already written it. I originally wanted to come to you, but I heard you just arrived and weren’t really in charge, no... I mean, I...” Old Sam Walker was about to speak the truth, but suddenly realized it was inappropriate, scratched his head awkwardly, and stammered for a long time without saying anything coherent.

Henry Walker naturally knew what Old Sam Walker wanted to say, and smiled tolerantly, helping him out: “You mean I’m not in charge, right?”

Old Sam Walker looked extremely embarrassed and hurriedly waved his hands: “No, I was thinking of going to the county to report it, but now that you, Secretary Walker, are in charge, I don’t have to go through all that trouble!” Having made up his mind, Old Sam Walker reached into his pants pocket and took out a neatly folded stack of letters, handing them to Henry Walker.

The handwriting on the letter was crooked, but the events were clearly described. Henry Walker skimmed through it and put the letter into his pocket.

Seeing Henry Walker accept his complaint letter, Old Sam Walker felt as if a weight had been lifted from his shoulders. He thanked Henry Walker profusely, then left with his companion, looking back every few steps.

“Uncle Wang, you became the top leader at such a young age?” The boy who came to eat with Evan Irving, Jack—whose full name is County Chief Grant—looked at Henry Walker with great admiration and said.

Patting Jack on the head, Henry Walker didn’t say anything, just smiled gently.

Evan Irving looked at Henry Walker in front of her, never expecting that this young man would actually be the top leader in the township. Yet, the smile on his face was especially warm and approachable! She stared blankly for a while, then remembered that she had once thought “Secretary Walker” was just a cliché name. Her cheeks flushed, and after a long pause, she finally said, “Secretary Walker, I keep causing you trouble! I really don’t know how to thank you.”

Under the light, Evan Irving looked so delicate and radiant, her fair and tender face glowing with shyness. Seeing that Evan Irving and Jack had almost finished eating, and thinking of his own empty stomach, Henry Walker finally said, “If you really want to thank me, just help me pay for the noodles. I forgot to bring money.”

Chapter 0012 Drawing the Sword (Part 1)

A five-li journey isn’t exactly short for Henry Walker. After running it in one go, he was drenched in sweat but felt completely refreshed and comfortable all over. Could it be that after being reborn, his physical fitness has improved as well? Thinking of his frail body before his rebirth, Henry Walker felt a bit surprised.

But then again, if something as extraordinary as rebirth could happen, nothing else seemed all that strange. With these thoughts flashing through his mind, Henry Walker wiped off his sweat and started running again for exercise.

After running back to the township government, Henry Walker returned to his office, took a shower, and freshened up before heading to the cafeteria.

“Third Brother, you drank quite a bit again last night, didn’t you?” Before Henry Walker even got close to the cafeteria, he heard the office director Philip Walker joking with Thomas Thompson. Philip Walker is Samuel Carter's trusted aide, and his relationship with Thomas Thompson is exceptionally close.

“No, not at all. Look at me, big head and thick neck, just a cook who scrubs pots and sweeps the stove. How could I compare to you, Chief Director Walker? Revolutionaries drink every day, ruining their health and their stomachs. Even if I wanted to get drunk, no one would invite me to a drinking party.”
