Chapter 10

The female teacher’s hand was delicate and boneless, soft and smooth as jade, clean and cool like a summer lotus. The moment she grasped Henry Walker’s palm, Henry Walker looked into those expectant eyes—gentle and clear, with an elegant face tinged with a faint sadness—and suddenly felt his heart skip a beat!

What came first was a faint, refreshing fragrance that washed over him. Although he knew this action was a bit forward, Henry Walker couldn’t help but take a deep breath, finally snapping out of his distracted, wandering thoughts.

How many years had it been? Henry Walker had long forgotten what it felt like to be moved, but at this moment, he instinctively felt that youthful, vivid, and decisive throb of the heart return all of a sudden!

That chubby Dean Graham found an excuse to leave, which was definitely closely related to the change in Little Ford’s attitude. Henry Walker knew well that this fat director absolutely didn’t take him, the Party Secretary, seriously. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have done something as tactless as leaving on the spot.

If he spoke up and asked Little Ford to save the person first, this Little Ford doctor would just push the matter onto the fat director. And if he went to look for the fat director, he might not even find him. After going around in circles like this, the little girl’s surgery would be delayed!

A mere director of a small health clinic dared to play such tricks right in front of him. If he couldn’t see through these twists and turns, he might as well not bother mixing in Xihezi Township! Glancing at the female teacher seeking his help, Henry Walker reached into his pocket.

Fortunately, he hadn’t been short of money in the past. With a touch, Henry Walker pulled out a wad of cash from his pocket, counted it, and found there was over two hundred. Feeling it might not be enough, Henry Walker glanced at David Grant and Grace Dawson and said, “Old Grant, Little Dawson, do either of you have any money on you? If you do, lend me some for now—I’ll pay you back later!”

After the fat director left, David Grant had been watching Henry Walker’s expression. Seeing Henry Walker standing there calmly, neither anxious nor cursing, as if nothing was wrong, he vaguely sensed that something was off.

This guy didn’t use his authority to pressure the doctor into doing the surgery, but instead turned to borrow money from himself and Grace Dawson. David Grant had a hunch: this time, that fat director was probably in trouble!

A vicious dog doesn’t bite, but the dog that bites doesn’t bark. That was exactly the feeling Secretary Walker gave him—not showing any reaction to Dean Graham’s abrupt departure, as if he hadn’t even noticed. He figured that with just one sly move, it would be enough to make that fat director suffer!

He’d lived more than forty years, always priding himself on his sharp judgment. How had he misjudged this calm and collected Secretary Walker before? It seemed that, in Xihezi Township, who really called the shots was something to be reconsidered in the future!

While David Grant was pondering, Grace Dawson had already handed her money to Henry Walker. Seeing Henry Walker look over at him, David Grant immediately made what he thought was the smartest choice—he slapped his jacket pocket, grinned, and said, “Secretary Walker, you’re borrowing money at just the right time, as if I’d prepared for it! I came to the hospital for a checkup today, so I just happen to have cash on me!” As he spoke, he handed the money straight to Henry Walker without even counting it.

Silently counting David Grant’s money, Henry Walker broke into a smile and said, “Old Grant, there’s a long road ahead. I won’t forget the money I owe you two!”

Henry Walker spoke lightly, but to David Grant and Grace Dawson, it sounded like the Secretary was giving them a meaningful promise.

Chapter 0006: Don’t Target the Diligent or the Lazy—Target Those Who Don’t Know Their Place

“Take this money—it should be enough for the child’s surgery,” Henry Walker said as he placed the money in the young female teacher’s palm.

When Henry Walker put the money in the young teacher’s hand, he wasn’t thinking of anything else. But the instant his palm touched hers, his previously calm heart was suddenly jolted by a feeling like an electric shock!

However, having experienced much in his previous life, he managed to keep this electric feeling hidden in his heart, without showing it in his eyes.

The anxious female teacher didn’t notice anything unusual about Henry Walker. The helplessness and grievance she’d felt earlier surged to her eyes like a rising tide, wave after wave. Perhaps moved by Henry Walker’s gesture, she smiled through her tears, which unknowingly welled up. She quickly wiped them away and repeatedly promised, “My name is Evan Irving, I’m a teacher from Hongling Village. Don’t worry, I’ll definitely pay you back as soon as possible! I promise!”

As she spoke, she dashed over to Little Ford and said, “We’ve got enough for the surgery now—please hurry and save my student.”

Watching her graceful figure disappear in a flash, Henry Walker couldn’t help but laugh. “What a fiery, energetic girl!”

Grace Dawson was standing to the side of Henry Walker, and happened to see his profile as he smiled. The moment Henry Walker smiled, she couldn’t help but be momentarily stunned.

When Secretary Walker smiles, he really is quite handsome!
