Chapter 16

“Henry and David Grant, I told you, you need to go to the embassy in the UK.”

“Ugh, this is so boring. I even told my dad I wanted to go to places like Somalia or the Middle East, like Syria, but my mom started tearing up next to me, and my dad smashed a cup at home. In the end, I could only go to the UK.”

“As a girl, you really should settle down a bit.”

“Once I leave, the club will probably fall apart too, right?”

“Pretty much. You know why Brian Cooper joined this club. Now that you’re gone, he won’t be interested in playing anymore.”

“There’s really nothing between me and him.”

“The way you’re explaining it, it sounds like you like me instead.”

“Alright, don’t flatter yourself. I wouldn’t fall for someone with a murder fetish. In the end, when your illness gets worse and you kill your wife too, that would be just too tragically poetic.”

There was a pause on the other end of the line, and Emma’s voice turned serious: “Seriously, William Clark, once I’m in the UK, I’ll help you contact a hospital. You can come to the UK for treatment.”

“Your beer and barbecue.” The barbecue stall owner brought the beer and barbecue over to William Clark.

“Thank you.” William Clark thanked the owner, then picked up the beer bottle and, instead of pouring it into a glass, drank straight from the bottle.

“I think you can’t keep putting off your illness. Right now, we’re just messing around, and the people we kill are all scum of society. Plus, with the family backgrounds the four of us have, even if we slip up, we can cover for each other. But what about later? If, in the future, you really… I’m not worried about myself, I’m just worried about you. You could really ruin your life, your family, everything.”

“I know.” William Clark took another swig of beer.

When it came to his own issues, William Clark was very clear. He also knew that his mental illness would only get worse in the future, completely out of control. Honestly, he was probably more suited to being a mercenary abroad, but because of his family, there would be a lot of resistance if he tried. Besides, Chinese people were never very popular in the mercenary market. Also, William Clark was well aware of his own abilities—some free-fighting skills and amateur firearms experience. That level was enough to show off at little gatherings of rich kids and get some screams and cheers, but if he tried to make a living off it, he’d probably be finished in no time. He was still way too green.

“I’ll help you find a hospital, and once I do, I’ll contact you. I need your consent, because this is your business.”

“Alright, that’s fine. If you find one, I can get a spot as an exchange student to the UK. Shouldn’t be a problem.”

“Mm, I’m glad you’re thinking this way.” Emma finished blow-drying her hair, lay down on the bed, and let out a comfortable sigh. “By the way, what about your girlfriend? Didn’t you say last time that a girl at your school was chasing you, and you were having meals together and things were developing?”

“Haven’t been in touch for a while,” William Clark said.

“How is that even dating? You’re just giving her the cold shoulder.”

“You said it yourself before—given my illness, it’s better not to drag other girls into this.”

Just then, out of the corner of his eye, William Clark saw two people walking over from across the street. One of them was holding a dog. The dog wasn’t very big, completely black, looking very lean and sharp, but it had a quality that set it apart from ordinary dogs. At the very least, it showed no interest at all in the leftover barbecue scraps on the ground. The man holding the dog was wearing a military camouflage tank top, looking strong and tough.

The other man was thinner and seemed younger, but was actually wearing sunglasses at night, which looked… rather ridiculous.

The two of them sat down at a table at the barbecue stall.

“What’s wrong? Did something happen?”

Emma was a very sensitive woman. She could sense a lot just from the changes in William Clark’s breathing.

“It’s nothing, really. Alright, you should get some rest. Thanks for everything.”

“No need to be so formal. Alright, you be careful too. I just read the latest reports—there might be someone even more twisted and bloodthirsty than you hiding near your school.”

“Mm.”

With that, William Clark hung up the phone.

But in his heart, William Clark was thinking: are they really murderers? Or is all of this really done by humans?

Silently drinking his beer, William Clark kept watching the man in camouflage and the man in sunglasses out of the corner of his eye. For some reason, William Clark felt there was something strange about them.

And the way the two of them sat there didn’t look like they were just out for a late-night snack. Instead, it was as if they were waiting for something to happen, looking rather serious and solemn.

At that moment, the little black dog ran over to William Clark and started circling around him.

William Clark, who wasn’t even afraid of killing, suddenly felt like he was sitting on pins and needles under the gaze of this little black dog.

“Come back.”

The man in camouflage called out, and the little black dog gave William Clark one last deep look before running back to its owner.

The man in sunglasses lowered his voice and said something to the man in camouflage. The man in camouflage nodded, then gave William Clark a meaningful look.
