Chapter 4

After a while, James Thompson was the first to speak: “Old Eight’s body isn’t even cold yet, how can we discuss this now? Let’s talk about it later.”

Christopher Carter found this amusing.

If Old Eight had died of illness or in a car accident, maybe the first one to jump out and claim his assets would have been you, James Thompson. But now you’re acting all righteous and pushing it away faster than anyone else—the reason is obvious.

You’re just afraid of trouble.

Who knows what the motive for the murder was? What if it really was related to Old Eight’s business? Even though his business didn’t seem special—just a somewhat well-known security company, with security services covering a wide range, and under the guise of dock security, they also dabbled in smuggling and fencing stolen goods. Nothing too serious, but you never know—better safe than sorry.

Of course, James Thompson’s thoughts didn’t escape his brothers’ notice, and immediately everyone put on a righteous front: “We can’t take advantage of this moment to get our hands on Old Eight’s stuff, people would talk behind our backs.”

Thomas Thompson said calmly, “Christopher, what about you?”

Christopher Carter sighed, “Someone has to look after Old Eight’s business. After all his years of hard work, we can’t just hand it over to outsiders.”

The sworn brothers fell silent. So you, Christopher Carter, are blinded by money, huh? You really have the nerve to take on this hot potato?

Fine, take it if you want. Good luck.

For once, the brothers didn’t mock him, which proved that the “people would talk behind our backs” thing wasn’t really going to happen.

Christopher Carter added, “If it’s given to me… I’ll do my best to help Old Eight… look into it.”

With that, he turned and left.

The brothers watched his back as he walked away, all silent, their eyes flickering with a strange, indescribable meaning.

“Oh, right.” Christopher Carter reached the door, then suddenly turned back: “Sixth Brother, you’ve been in entertainment management for a while—are you pretty familiar with the industry?”

Old Six was taken aback, then nodded: “Pretty much. Didn’t get anywhere in the early days, managed a useless actor and even fell out with him. Luckily, I pulled off something big last year and finally made a name for myself. If you need anything, just say the word.”

Christopher Carter smiled: “When the time comes, I won’t stand on ceremony with you, Sixth Brother.”

Old Six pulled out a business card and tossed it over: “Here, drop by the company sometime.”

Christopher Carter caught it easily and glanced at it: C-Jes Entertainment, Baek Chang-soo.

Chapter Three: Security Company

Early in the morning, Christopher Carter brought a group of people to Old Eight’s security company. Ethan Grant was driving in front, while Christopher Carter sat in the back, frowning in thought.

He’d said he would help look into things for Old Eight, but that was just talk. He knew the old man liked to hear it.

Maybe some people wouldn’t like it… but as long as the old man was happy, that was enough.

Taking over Old Eight’s business might be dangerous. But… if there’s no danger, when would he ever get the chance to grow stronger?

From a homeless orphan joining the Xin Cun gang, from an unwelcomed Chinese kid to becoming Thomas Thompson’s adopted son, from a reckless cannon fodder to the feared Ninth Master, Christopher Carter relied on much more than just his muscles.

“Ninth Brother.” Ethan Grant suddenly grinned, “Should I call you Eighth Brother now?”

Christopher Carter twitched his lips… Tang Eight? Good thing my surname isn’t Wang…

“Forget it, don’t change it.”

“Okay.”

“It’s a bit dull, let’s listen to some music.”

“Sure.” Ethan Grant wasn’t surprised. Almost everyone like them liked to listen to something energetic while driving, sometimes even the radio.

He switched the urban traffic news he’d been listening to to another station, just in time to hear the radio host: “It’s time to recommend a new song to everyone…”

“I’m sure everyone remembers four months ago, when CUBE’s Beast and 4minute collaborated—Jang Hyun-seung and Kim Hyun-a formed Troublemaker and received great acclaim. Now, CUBE is at it again, with another member of Beast teaming up with Apink from their subsidiary ACUBE… Apink, who debuted last year, must be familiar to everyone. Their ‘Mymy’ achieved pretty good results…”

“Damn, what a chatterbox.” Christopher Carter cursed irritably. He had no idea who any of the names on the radio were.

“…This time, the collaboration is between Beast’s main vocalist Yang Yoseob and Apink’s main vocalist Jung Eun-ji. The cooperation between these two main vocalists is really something to look forward to…”

“Huh…” Christopher Carter stopped cursing, his expression turning a bit odd.

What a coincidence… Tsk tsk, who would’ve thought, she’s actually a main vocalist?

“…They’ll be bringing everyone a fresh new song, ‘Loveday.’ Please enjoy.”

Ethan Grant shook his head: “Another one of those sappy love songs. Want to change the station?”

“No, let’s listen.” Christopher Carter folded his arms with a half-smile and closed his eyes.

To his taste, anyone who could hit high notes was a great singer, and those who could do dolphin notes were the best…

So, this girl actually sings pretty well. Who would’ve thought that little face could have such a penetrating voice—no wonder she’s the main vocalist…

Suddenly, the image of the girl’s angry face popped into Christopher Carter’s mind: “What’s wrong with being a singer? Is someone like you qualified to mock me?”

“Heh…” He couldn’t help but laugh.

Ethan Grant, driving, glanced at the rearview mirror in confusion. Was this song really that funny?
