Chapter 9

“What are you doing?” Christopher Carter started laughing, silently muttering “What do you think,” but outwardly said with a smile, “As you can see, I’m in charge of security this time.”

“You yourself are the biggest threat to public safety!”

“Oh, that’s giving me too much credit. I’m not at that level yet.”

“You!” Emily Green gritted her teeth and said coldly, “The mafia doing security—what a world-class irony.”

The mafia…

The girls all instinctively shrank back a little, and Paul Parker, who had just shaken hands, subconsciously wiped her palm on her pants.

“Heh…” Everyone’s reactions didn’t faze Christopher Carter at all. Over the years, he’d seen plenty of fear and disgust from people, and was long used to it. “So you look down on the mafia, huh?”

Emily Green shot him a sidelong glance without saying a word, as if to say, isn’t that obvious?

Christopher Carter spread his hands. “Unfortunately, today your safety really is in the hands of this mafia guy.”

Paul Parker quickly tried to smooth things over: “Thank you for your trouble, Mr. Tang. We really appreciate your help just now.”

Emily Green said coldly, “Help? He just gave us another Anti, that’s what really happened. For all we know, the internet is already full of rumors about Apink being involved with the mafia.”

Paul Parker chided her softly, “People would have to believe it first.”

Emily Green pressed her lips together and said nothing more. She still had a lot of respect for her team leader.

“Um…” Christopher Carter scratched his head, a bit hesitant. “Can I ask, what exactly is an Anti?”

The car fell silent. Someone couldn’t help but laugh, then quickly covered their mouth.

The mafia, huh… still pretty scary…

Paul Parker found it a little funny too, but explained anyway: “It means anti-fan.”

“Oh, that’s no big deal.” Christopher Carter chuckled. “I’ve been hating on Lee Seung-gi, that bastard, for ages. Those shameless media outlets even claim he doesn’t have any Antis. Hah, isn’t that just nonsense?”

Paul Parker blinked. “Why be an Anti to senior Lee Seung-gi? He’s a really nice person.”

“Nice, my ass. I’m Chinese.” Christopher Carter waved his hand. “You wouldn’t get it even if I explained. Anyway, you Koreans have been bashing China for ages too, and I don’t have time to bother with him.”

Paul Parker shook her head. “If you’re not bothering with him, you’re not really an Anti. A real Anti… hmm… besides cursing online whenever they get the chance, some of the extreme ones even cause physical harm.”

Christopher Carter was stunned for a moment, then immediately connected it to his current job. “So, being your security, I have to guard against these so-called Antis too?”

Paul Parker looked a bit embarrassed. “We’re actually fine, we don’t really have Antis. And it’s not that exaggerated, usually there’s no problem.”

“So there are still some…” Christopher Carter frowned. As long as there was even a slight possibility, responsible security had to take it into account. Honestly, this kind of thing was really rare in China—who would go to such extremes to hurt a celebrity? But in this bizarre country, who knows…

Paul Parker quietly whispered in Emily Green’s ear, “He seems really serious. He must be from a responsible security company—how could he be mafia?”

Emily Green shook her head. She didn’t know this guy either, but there was no doubt about the mafia part. Her dad still had bruises that hadn’t faded yet. No, they hadn’t even gotten the wallet back, and replacing the IDs had been such a hassle! Thinking of this, she glared fiercely at Christopher Carter again.

While they were talking, the backstage area was already set up, and the girls filed out of the car, breathing in the fresh air.

Christopher Carter watched expressionlessly, though he secretly swallowed.

Damn… what is this? He’d thought Emily Green was already pretty cute, but her teammates were all so beautiful that, by comparison, Emily Green seemed almost ordinary. Not just pretty, but each one had a fresh, pure aura. For someone like him, who was used to the heavy makeup and vulgarity of nightclubs, this was a novel and deadly kind of attraction.

Actually… this was also why he kept thinking of Emily Green these days. Besides the regret of missing out on a sure thing, he had to admit this girl gave him a unique, fresh experience.

In a daze, he found himself thinking of the school life he’d always regretted missing out on, never having had the chance to experience it.

Christopher Carter sighed inwardly, losing the mood to speak.

Of course, Emily Green wasn’t about to talk to him either. She hid in the farthest corner, looking a bit deflated. The other girls were all curious—there was definitely a story between Eunji and this Mr. Tang, and definitely not a friendly one. As her friends, they might have a bit of goodwill toward Christopher Carter, but there was no way they’d chat with him in front of Eunji. So Christopher Carter was left forgotten in the corner, ignored by everyone.

Christopher Carter didn’t mind either. He glanced at Emily Green with a half-smile, then strolled out of the backstage area.

Don’t let me catch you alone, little girl.
