Chapter 16

Howard Bennett glared: “Logan Grant is my fellow townsman. Just for that alone, you should treat him with more respect! Next time you see him, apologize to him!”

Corey saw that his father was really about to lose his temper, and hurriedly, though reluctantly, said, “Yes, Dad…”

But in his heart he was thinking: I don’t ever want to see him again! How dare he insult my idol! I’ll never get along with you, you stupid rookie!

……

The next day, Logan Grant went to youth team training as usual.

As he walked into the locker room, Lucas greeted him enthusiastically: “Hey, Rong, good morning!”

“Good morning, Lucas.”

After greeting each other, he began changing clothes in front of his locker.

One after another, more youth team players came in. They greeted each other and then started changing as well.

While changing, they would gather together and chat about the hottest topics lately.

And lately, the hottest topic was naturally Kaka.

“I heard Kaka renewed his contract with the club… and got a big raise too…”

“That’s great! As long as Kaka stays with the team, São Paulo can defend the Rio–São Paulo Championship title this year!”

“Kaka’s performance in last year’s league was amazing! I heard he’s already caught the attention of the national team…”

“Really? Does that mean he might get to play in the World Cup this year?! Wow! The World Cup! Just thinking about it is exciting… When will I ever get a chance?”

“When you score twelve goals in your first Rio–São Paulo Championship season…”

“Hahaha!”

Logan Grant noticed something strange: when he knew nothing about Kaka, it seemed like he had never even heard his name.

But after what happened last night, he found that the word “Kaka” was popping up around him more and more.

Didn’t he hear Kaka’s name mentioned much less in the locker room yesterday?

He asked Lucas next to him, “Why is everyone talking about Kaka?”

“Ha, because Kaka really is amazing. Right now, he’s the brightest star in São Paulo. And this is only his first year in the first team!” Lucas also thought Kaka was incredible.

That’s how any normal person would feel, right?

Kaka is sunny and cheerful, handsome and elegant, with outstanding skills. Whether it’s his looks or his football ability, he’s top-notch. It’s really hard to find anything to criticize about him.

But there are always some people in this world who are a bit different from the majority.

Logan Grant thought of the attitude of that little girl yesterday—he’d actually been looked down on by a twelve-year-old girl…

“Hmph, one day I’ll make everyone talk about me the way they talk about Kaka!” Logan Grant said defiantly.

Normally, the locker room was always noisy with everyone talking at once, but at that exact moment, for some reason, no one said a word, and the room fell into a very brief silence.

At the same time, Logan Grant’s words—“One day I’ll make everyone talk about me the way they talk about Kaka!”—rang out abruptly in the locker room.

To the youth team players, those words sounded a bit jarring.

After all, who said it? It was Logan Grant! The rookie who just joined the team yesterday! He’s only learned how to juggle the ball so far—what right does he have to say something like that?

Kaka is São Paulo’s core player, a future star, maybe even the future hope of Brazilian football.

The gap between him and Logan Grant is like heaven and earth, more than a hundred thousand light-years apart.

Isn’t it a bit too arrogant for Logan Grant to say something like that?

Does he even understand the situation?

It’s not that Kaka has no rivals, but that rival definitely can’t be this rookie who just joined the team!

Someone immediately burst out laughing: “That’s hilarious!”

“Rookie, you’re the last person in this room qualified to say that.”

“You’ve only learned how to juggle the ball. Don’t get cocky just because you learned it in a day. Keep your feet on the ground, Chinese boy.”

“Talk about you? Because of your terrible failures? Are you crazy?”

“Don’t say such nonsense. Trying to hype yourself up by insulting a star is bound to fail! Idiot!”

“How could it be? If you daydream too much, be careful you can’t tell dreams from reality!”

“With your experience of only starting to play football at sixteen… just being able to come to São Paulo to learn football is already pretty good. Don’t set such unrealistic goals, or you’ll lose your way. Kaka isn’t someone you should be chasing!”

All kinds of mocking voices echoed in the locker room.

Some people, out of kindness, tried to remind Logan Grant, but at their core, they were no different from the others—they looked down on Logan Grant, and didn’t believe he could do what he said.

It was just one of many big boasts made by an ignorant teenager.

If it hadn’t been about Kaka, probably no one would have even paid attention.

The previously cheerful atmosphere in the locker room had changed.

It now seemed full of hostility toward Logan Grant.
