Chapter 4

Could this be another world? Are the wolves in this world all vegetarians?

There were simply too many things to think about, but at that moment, the only question that popped into William Carter's mind was one that concerned his immediate situation. However, when the wolf across from him yawned and opened its mouth, he immediately dismissed that idea. If it were a vegetarian, what were those two rows of razor-sharp, chilling teeth in its mouth for? Chewing on vegetables?

The best time to be shocked had already passed. At this point, to open his mouth and let out a deafening scream would be a bit of a "Monday morning quarterback" move. All William Carter could do was curl up his naked body and, as inconspicuously as possible, move toward the side of the cave farthest from the wolf. At this moment, he was left with only a pair of underwear, which was really quite cold. Maybe that was why, while unconscious, he had instinctively hugged the wolf.

The giant wolf stared at him for a while, seemed to lose interest, shook its head, and continued to rest with its eyes closed. Good opportunity! William Carter thought, maybe he could take this chance to escape. He estimated the distance between himself and the cave entrance, calculating the odds of making it out without being noticed by the wolf—of course, it was impossible. But maybe it just didn't care about him...

Just as he was thinking this, the light at the cave entrance suddenly dimmed. A creature darted in from outside. William Carter only just noticed the movement, and in the blink of an eye, a curious face appeared in front of him. Long silver hair hung loose—it was her, the silver-haired girl from that day. After he fell off the cliff, she had jumped down after him. So, was it she who had saved him?

Hesitating, unsure whether to speak, the girl looked into his eyes and began to call out, "Ee, woo, ah..." She reached out and tentatively poked William Carter's shoulder. Seeing that he didn't react, she gently stroked his arm. The girl wore a faint smile, appearing friendly, but William Carter's heart sank. The sounds she made were clearly not a language—there were no complex inflections or changes, just some monotonous syllables, many of which were obviously imitating the howls of wolves.

William Carter glanced at the cave entrance. A dark shadow was pacing there—it was the giant wolf he had hugged earlier. The other giant wolf, which had been lying on the ground, now got up and walked over. The silver-haired girl affectionately wrapped one arm around the giant wolf's neck and stroked William Carter's arm with the other. Her hand was warm and gentle, though a bit rough, and the touch was quite distinct.

Looking at the wolf's head so close yet without malice, William Carter was struck by a thought. He had often read stories about baby girls abandoned in the forest and raised by animals. It seemed the silver-haired girl before him was just such a case. Perhaps it was because she had rescued him that these two wolves hadn't attacked him.

Thinking this, he realized he didn't know how to respond. Speak? She wouldn't understand. Use gestures? She might not get those either. So what should he do? As he pondered, the girl and the giant wolf beside her "woo-woo ah-ah"ed a few words to each other, then she turned and ran out, disappearing with the wolf at the cave entrance into the dazzling daylight. The wolf beside him tilted its head and looked at him a few times, then strolled back to its original spot and continued to rest with its eyes closed.

After quite a while, the wolf still hadn't moved. William Carter tried sitting up and looked around. This was a cave of about thirty square meters, with some dry grass spread on the ground. In a corner not far away were scattered strips of cloth, clearly the remains of his own clothes, torn to shreds. The wind blew in from the cave entrance, bringing a chill. He sat for a while, wanting to go outside and take a look, when the silver-haired girl rushed in from outside, her arms full of things, dropping a few as she came. They were red and green fruits. The giant wolf from before followed behind her, carrying a bloody little animal in its mouth—probably a rabbit, already dead.

The girl and the wolf came up to him, placing the fruits and the dead rabbit in front of him. Then the girl squatted on the ground, looking at him expectantly. The wolf went over to the other wolf and continued to rest.

The silver-haired girl looked at him, and he looked back, then hesitantly glanced at the food on the ground and picked up a fruit to eat. The things the girl had brought were all good—sweet and sour, very tasty. As for the dead rabbit, William Carter of course wouldn't touch it. The girl watched him for a while, then smiled, pushing all the fruits toward him. She picked up the rabbit, took a big bite, blood splattering everywhere. The girl looked up, her mouth full of blood, and sucked a string of meat into her mouth with a "slurp." She wiped the blood from the corner of her mouth, looked at William Carter's horrified expression, and giggled...

After spending half a day together, William Carter finally confirmed that these two wolves and the girl wouldn't harm him, and they allowed him to walk around outside the cave. The cave was at the base of a small hill, and outside was a lush meadow, with the forest starting dozens of meters away—in fact, it was all part of the primeval forest. Looking up at an angle, a great waterfall hung in the distance like a white curtain, and the steep, cliff-like mountain walls curved around like a crescent toward the horizon. He really had no idea how he could get up there—all his things were still in his backpack and tent above.
