Chapter 9

Sarah Young obviously didn’t expect to see Hannah Quinn here either. She paused slightly before giving a faint smile and saying, “It’s been a while since we last met. I didn’t expect to run into you here by chance. Are you alone?”

“With David Thompson, of course! We’re good friends!”

Hannah Quinn felt an inexplicable nervousness. She playfully punched David Thompson on the shoulder and replied with a giggle.

A strange look flashed in Sarah Young’s eyes; she clearly didn’t know that David Thompson actually knew Hannah Quinn.

Of course, what she didn’t know was that David Thompson, afraid that his embarrassing middle school stories would get out, had never told anyone in high school that he knew Hannah Quinn.

Chapter 5: The Stingy Man

As the saying goes, like repels like.

Whether it’s women or girls, this saying always holds true.

Especially when it comes to two outstanding women in every aspect, like Hannah Quinn and Sarah Young.

Although they greeted each other warmly, David Thompson, who had been in society for years, could easily see the discomfort between Sarah Young and Hannah Quinn.

Standing off to the side, Evelyn Brooks played the supporting role much more naturally. Although she wasn’t familiar with Hannah Quinn, she greeted her enthusiastically and quickly became a bridge for communication between them.

David Thompson glanced at Hannah Quinn and saw that she seemed to have forgotten about him, happily chatting with Evelyn Brooks. He couldn’t help but feel a bit helpless.

Anyone who didn’t know better would think they were best friends. Who would have guessed this was their first meeting?

David Thompson wasn’t in a hurry. He wandered around for a bit, and the slight disappointment in his heart quickly faded away.

Although it wasn’t his first time at Oriental Plaza, after all he’d been through, stepping onto this familiar ground again still made David Thompson feel a bit sentimental.

The scenes in his memory had become a little blurry. After graduating from high school, he rarely had time to come to Oriental Plaza, and after his parents passed away, he’d never been back.

He strolled east and west, his mind filled with all sorts of thoughts, so much so that he didn’t even notice when William Clark, Hannah Quinn, and the others behind him stopped walking.

It wasn’t until William Clark called out that David Thompson snapped back to reality.

Looking back, he saw that Hannah Quinn and the others had stopped in front of a stall selling small accessories and were picking things out.

Seeing David Thompson walk over, Hannah Quinn, her face flushed from being squeezed by the crowd, said excitedly, “David Thompson, do you think this bracelet is pretty?”

She held the bracelet up to her fair wrist, but little did she know that David Thompson was only staring at her arm, not really paying attention to her question.

Fortunately, David Thompson wasn’t the type to be completely distracted by a pretty girl. He collected himself and smiled, “It looks nice. If you like it, just buy it.”

After all, it was only about ten yuan—David Thompson didn’t really care.

Hearing this, Hannah Quinn beamed with joy and immediately started bargaining with the stall owner. Generally speaking, women are experts at bargaining, no matter their age. Whether or not they succeed, it’s all part of the fun.

David Thompson didn’t rush to help pay. Although he was familiar with Hannah Quinn, being too eager to please could easily backfire.

Meanwhile, Evelyn Brooks and Sarah Young each took a liking to a few small accessories. Evelyn Brooks busied herself bargaining, while Sarah Young hesitated for a moment before putting down the item she was holding.

David Thompson watched coldly from the side. He knew it probably wasn’t because of the money.

Although he didn’t know much about Sarah Young’s family background, judging by her usual dress and style, she probably wasn’t lacking.

Since it wasn’t about money, and Sarah Young seemed to really like the accessory, it must have been about saving face.

David Thompson glanced at Sarah Young. She didn’t wear many accessories—a bracelet, a half-hidden necklace under her clothes, and no earrings. Based on his years of experience, they were probably all platinum.

Nowadays, platinum is even more expensive than gold. Although Sarah Young liked the small accessories at the stall, her privileged background clearly made her unwilling to lower her pride to buy such cheap items.

David Thompson curled his lips and said nothing. If you can’t even buy something you like because you care too much about others’ opinions, life is too exhausting.

But everyone has their own way of living. He had no right to criticize Sarah Young; it was just a different lifestyle.

On the side, Hannah Quinn quickly settled on a price with the owner, put the bracelet on her wrist, and still wore the happiness of a successful bargain on her face.

David Thompson smiled at the sight. This was the type he liked—genuine, unpretentious. He just wondered if he’d ever get to be with her.

At that moment, Evelyn Brooks also finished bargaining, but unexpectedly, the usually silent William Clark suddenly stepped forward and paid. Evelyn Brooks blushed but didn’t refuse.

Now it was David Thompson’s turn to be dumbfounded. What was going on? In his previous life, he’d never heard of anything between those two!

Before he could think more, the previously excited Hannah Quinn suddenly pouted, stood on tiptoe, and stepped on David Thompson’s foot, complaining, “Stingy! Why didn’t you pay for me?”

David Thompson bared his teeth, “I wanted to, but only if you’re willing, right?”

“That’s true, but still, you’re stingy. Typical petty man, no wonder you hold grudges.” Hannah Quinn giggled and stopped teasing David Thompson.

David Thompson looked innocent. How did it end up being all his fault? Stingy and petty—was that really Hannah Quinn’s impression of him?

He sighed. Seeing Evelyn Brooks and William Clark both blushing and silent, and Sarah Young also absent-minded, he thought, since they’d all come out together, it was a shame for the atmosphere to be so cold and dull.
