Chapter 18

Suddenly, she thought of Ethan Brooks's sharp yet sorrowful and confused gaze, his captivating tone of voice. Nurse Foster's face flushed slightly. Although Ethan Brooks's head was wrapped up like a gourd and she hadn't seen what he actually looked like, the photo on Ethan Brooks's medical record wasn't bad-looking. Of course, that photo was brought later by Helen Carter. At the time, Ethan Brooks was covered in blood, and all he had on him was a student ID from Zhejiang Qing University. Fortunately, although his phone was smashed beyond recognition, the data inside was still intact. Nurse Foster called the numbers listed under his name one by one, and that's how she managed to notify Ethan Brooks's parents.

But among the contacts, there were people like Big Henry and Jason, who seemed to be his classmates, and another called Grace. She tried calling; both Big Henry and Jason answered, and when they heard that Ethan Brooks had been in a car accident, they were extremely anxious. But no one answered Grace's phone, and there was never a call back from Grace. Could it really be, as Dr. Sullivan said, that they were a couple and had a falling out?

Judging from the photo, Ethan Brooks's looks could be considered decent, though he seemed a bit delicate and lacked masculinity. But in person, he turned out to be completely different from the photo—except for those melancholy eyes, that magnetic voice, and his height of 1.82 meters. How could he possibly have trouble pursuing girls?

Helen Carter thought for a moment. "He seems to have a girlfriend, but I don't like her. That girl's name is Grace. I've only met her twice. Originally, his father and I wanted him to apply to a university in Beijing, but because this girl didn't want to go far, she applied to Zhejiang Qing University here in the city, which is quite a well-known university in China. So Little Ethan insisted on applying there too. It's been two years now, but as for what's really going on between them, I haven't paid much attention. Could it really be because of Grace?"

"Actually, this just shows you parents haven't been attentive enough," Dr. Sullivan said, his tone slightly reproachful. But seeing the couple's expressions, he couldn't bear to say more. "If you want to find out the reason, it's actually quite simple—just ask his classmates, or go directly to their advisor."

"Who are you looking for?" Nurse Foster suddenly asked.

The three of them turned to look toward the door and saw two people peeking inside. Helen Carter exclaimed in surprise, "Big Henry, Jason, I was just thinking of finding Little Ethan's classmates, and I can't believe you two actually came here." She glanced at her husband. "Did you notify them?"

Ping Brooks shook his head, thinking to himself that he hadn't even considered it, and besides, what would have been the point of notifying them at the time?

The two outside the door were also pleasantly surprised. They quickly walked in, greeted Helen Carter as "Auntie" and Ping Brooks as "Uncle." The one on the left wasn't tall but looked very sturdy, almost square-shaped at first glance, which spoke to his burly build.

His chin was covered in stubble, freshly shaved to a bluish tint. He had big eyes and a wide mouth, and his face was always lit up with a smile, though he still looked a bit like a ruffian.

"Aunt He, it wasn't Uncle Lin who notified us—it was a nurse from the hospital." As he said this, he glanced at Nurse Foster, saw her nod slightly, and suddenly said, "It was you, wasn't it?"

Nurse Foster nodded. "You're the Big Henry listed in Ethan Brooks's phone?"

"Of course that's me. My name is Henry Miller. Miss Nurse, what's your surname?" No matter how he looked at this nurse, she seemed pleasing to the eye. He thought that in the future, if he caught a cold or something, he wouldn't go to the campus doctor—he'd just come here instead.

Niu Fen? Nurse Foster's expression turned a bit odd. If she hadn't needed to keep a straight face in front of the family, she would have burst out laughing. What kind of parent would give their child a name like that?

"My surname is Xiao. Just call me Nurse Foster." She couldn't help but let a smile slip at the corners of her mouth.

Seeing Nurse Foster's expression, Big Henry felt a bit embarrassed. "Nurse Foster, don't get the wrong idea—it's the 'fen' from 'strive.'"

Every time he introduced himself, he had to explain, which made Big Henry somewhat resentful of his dad for giving him such a lousy name. But since he was Ethan Brooks's best buddy, he was still very concerned about his injuries. "Aunt He, how is Ethan? As soon as I got the call, I rushed over, but some things delayed me. When I asked Jason, he said he got the call too, so we hurried over together." He glanced at Helen Carter's face and sensed something was wrong. "How is Ethan really doing?"

The one on the right was about the same height as Big Henry, just much thinner—almost scrawny, with a bit of a shifty look. Seeing Aunt He not speaking, he grew anxious. "Aunt He, why did you want to see us?"

Helen Carter glanced at Dr. Sullivan and introduced them, "This one is Big Henry, and that one is Jason Reed. They're both students at Zhejiang Qing University. Although they're not in the same department as Little Ethan, they live in the same dormitory and get along very well. Whenever they have free time, they often come to our house." Seeing Dr. Sullivan nod slightly, his gaze encouraging, she finally turned to Big Henry and Jason and said, "Are you two Little Ethan's good friends?"

Big Henry thumped his chest loudly and quickly glanced at the pretty nurse. "Of course! If you need anything from us, just say the word. If it's within our power, there's nothing to say. Even if it's not, we'll find another way."
