Chapter 19

“Ethan how is he now?” Jason Reed added.

“He’s woken up, but he hit his head.” Helen Carter’s voice was a little choked.

Big Henry still hadn’t come to his senses, but Jason’s expression changed. “And now?” He was quicker on the uptake than Big Henry, so he thought of more possibilities, knowing that a head injury was no trivial matter.

“Now…” Helen Carter hesitated for a moment. “He doesn’t seem to recognize anyone, and keeps talking about Yue Fei, Qin Hui, and Jin Wuzhu.” She didn’t mention Jin Wuzhu’s son, but since Helen Carter had read the Complete Legend of Yue Fei, she knew there was such a figure in the Jin dynasty, so she just said it offhand—it was close enough.

Big Henry and Jason looked at each other. “No way, could it be that damned game that did this to him?”

Dr. Sullivan’s face changed. “What game?”

“That so-called Sword Fate game, an online game.” Jason curled his lip. “It’s the most popular game this year, about the conflict between the Song and Jin dynasties. Big Henry and I don’t like it.”

“Does Xiaofei play it often?” Helen Carter couldn’t help but ask. Online games are so harmful—not only are minors tempted and unable to extricate themselves, even college students are the same. She really couldn’t understand what was so good about staring at a computer screen all day.

“He didn’t use to play much; the game hasn’t been popular for long.” Jason said hurriedly, worried that if Ethan woke up and found out he’d tattled, it would be trouble. “It’s just that he’s been in a bad mood lately, so he’s been playing day and night. Big Henry and I tried to talk him out of it, but he wouldn’t listen. We thought he’d get over it after a while, but we never expected something like this to happen.”

Suddenly, he thought of something—could it be that Ethan played too much, and that’s why he was so absent-minded when he got hit by the car?

“Why was he in a bad mood?” Dr. Sullivan suddenly asked.

“Yeah, you two were with him, you must know.” Aunt Carter asked anxiously. At this point, she didn’t care about who was at fault in the accident—if her son could wake up, that was all that mattered.

Jason seemed a bit hesitant and glanced at Big Henry. “Big Henry, you say it.”

“Fine, I’ll say it, what’s the big deal.” Big Henry acted unconcerned. “In a word, it’s because of a woman. I’m not afraid of Xiaofei blaming me when he wakes up—I’ve tried to talk sense into him many times. That woman’s no good, but he just wouldn’t listen.” He noticed Nurse Foster looking at him and frowned slightly, then hurriedly added, “Nurse Foster, I’m not talking about you. Of course there are good women too. If Xiaofei was with you, I’d absolutely support it with both hands.”

A flush crept up Nurse Foster’s face, but she could only smile and say, “You’re all the cream of the crop. How could a little nurse like me be worthy?”

“Worthy, absolutely worthy.” Big Henry said repeatedly, though it was unclear whether he meant worthy of Ethan Brooks or himself.

Aunt Carter frowned, but had to ask, “Is the woman Xiaofei’s hung up on that Xuejun?”

“It’s none other than Grace White.” Big Henry shouted. “I’ve never liked her since high school.”

“She’s the one who doesn’t like you.” Jason Reed said sarcastically from the side.

“Pfft, even if I never find a wife in my life, I wouldn’t go for someone like her. Nurse Foster, don’t you think so?” He grinned at Nurse Foster, puffing out his chest.

Nurse Foster just asked, “And then?”

Big Henry, a little embarrassed, continued, “Later, she applied to Zheqing University, and Xiaofei insisted on applying too. Since we’re best buddies, of course I applied to the same school. Jason came from another province, and got in on his own merit. Xiaofei relied on his local advantage and got a few extra points on the college entrance exam—otherwise, it would’ve been tough. As for me, it was even tougher, but I had my own strengths.”

Seeing him ramble on, Aunt Carter grew anxious. “So you got in as a special recruit, so what? Everyone knows you’re stronger than an ox. Now tell us about Xiaofei.”

Seeing Aunt Carter’s worried look, Big Henry snapped back to the matter at hand, blushing a little. He thought to himself that he’d lost his sense of loyalty, getting carried away bragging in front of a pretty girl and forgetting the main issue. He stopped rambling. “After we got to college, Xiaofei kept chasing after Grace White. Honestly, Grace White is just average looking, compared to…” He was about to use Nurse Foster as a comparison, but seeing her unhappy expression, he quickly changed tack. “I really don’t know what Xiaofei sees in her—maybe his brain’s just wired wrong.”

He caught a glimpse of Aunt Carter’s stern face and realized he’d said the wrong thing again. Now that Xiaofei had a head injury, saying his brain was wired wrong was asking for a scolding. He pretended to slap himself. “I just have a big mouth, Aunt Carter, please don’t mind me.”

Aunt Carter’s expression softened a bit and she shook her head. “I just hope Xiaofei wakes up soon. Did that Xuejun reject him?”

“No.” Big Henry said angrily. “I may not be smart, but even I can see she’s just playing with Xiaofei. That woman is really scheming. Back in freshman year, nobody liked her. Xiaofei is 1.8 meters tall, not bad looking, the prince of the journalism department. Maybe not as handsome as Pan An, but at least as good as Song Yu—not like me, big and burly.”
