Chapter 3

“Oh, I see, I—I’ll do my best.” Adam Clark looked as if he half-understood, making Grace Bennett realize what it truly meant to play the lute to a cow, and what it meant when mud just can’t be shaped into a wall.

Chapter 2: Speaking of These Two Narcissists

“Hm? Where’s that stinky... brother-in-law?” Grace Bennett shook her adorable little head and looked around. Where did that stinky old man go? Could it be that, seeing how hot the weather is, he went to buy ice cream for this little beauty? The more she thought about it, the more likely it seemed. Who would have thought that old man could be so considerate? Hmph, I’ll give you that—you know your place. This little beauty only eats Häagen-Dazs ice cream, but fine, since you’re so thoughtful, I won’t make a fuss. Even a two-yuan one will do.

While Grace Bennett was narcissistically marveling at the power of her own beauty, Adam Clark couldn’t help but remind her, “That guy just went in there.” He pointed to the entrance of the talent market.

“There’s a convenience store right next door, why go in there to buy something? That stinky brother-in-law, his eyesight must be bad.” Grace Bennett hadn’t caught on at all. She lifted her little head and started bragging to Adam Clark with great pride: “My brother-in-law is the most caring person ever. He’s doted on me since I was little. If I tell him to go east, he wouldn’t dare go west. If I tell him to eat the melon, he wouldn’t dare eat the rind. Hey, don’t think my brother-in-law is like you. When it really matters, he never hesitates. I remember one breezy, sunny night, my handsome brother-in-law and I ran into three big, burly thugs. Those three, oh my, they were something else, actually trying to harass this little beauty. Can you believe how bold they were? Absolutely inhuman.”

At this point, Grace Bennett deliberately paused, leaving Adam Clark hanging in suspense. He nervously tugged at his shirt and asked, “And then?” Grace Bennett grinned smugly, feeling absolutely delighted, spitting as she spoke: “Then my brother-in-law stepped forward and fought those three thugs. The fight lasted three days and three nights! After three days, my brother-in-law was covered in wounds—so tragic! But those thugs didn’t fare any better. They were all intimidated by my brother-in-law and ran off in a panic. Hmph, even now, my brother-in-law still has scars from fighting for me.” Miss Grace Bennett used the exaggeration techniques she learned in language class, making the story vivid and moving.

“Your brother-in-law is amazing.” Adam Clark looked full of longing and admiration.

That was some tall tale—Grace Bennett could be called a calf-killer, because all the bulls have been blown to death by her.

Yet Grace Bennett didn’t blush at all, accepting his praise for her brother-in-law with a clear conscience, even her little tail behind her standing up in satisfaction.

There are deep levels to bragging: men boast about how many women they have to feel satisfied, while women boast about how strong their men are to feel proud.

In her youthful girlhood, Grace Bennett’s little vanity was greatly satisfied. However, her wary little eyes never left the entrance of the talent market, afraid that the uncle whose name she didn’t even know would suddenly appear and expose her lies.

“Hmph, now you know how great my brother-in-law is.” Grace Bennett glanced at him with her bright little eyes. “As for you, don’t get any ideas. Hurry up and... and... what was it again?”

“Know when to quit.”

“Yes, yes, know when to quit. My future husband must be a real man like my brother-in-law. You—”

Before she could finish, Adam Clark lowered his head in embarrassment. “Qiqi, I’ll definitely become a real man like your brother-in-law.” With that, he slipped into the dense crowd and disappeared.

“No way, he just ran off?” Grace Bennett felt a little frustrated. Usually, no matter how much she tried, he never gave up. But today, with the uncle’s influence, it worked so well. She couldn’t help but mutter, “Is he really as good as I said? Isn’t he just an ordinary pervy old man?”

“Who are you calling a pervy old man?” Brian Harris suddenly appeared and glared at her fiercely.

“Ah!” Grace Bennett covered her mouth in surprise, then shot him a dissatisfied look. “What’s with you, always sneaking up and scaring people? You gave me a fright.” Then she started to feel guilty. When did this stinky old man show up? Did he hear what I just said? That would be so embarrassing.

Trying to change the subject, she clung to his arm and shook it coquettishly: “Brother-in-law, where’s Qiqi’s ice cream? It’s so hot, hurry and give it to me.”

Brian Harris knocked her on the forehead in annoyance. “Ice cream, my foot! It’s because of you, you unlucky girl, that I couldn’t find a job again. Hmph, who knows how that shrew will scold me when we get home.”

“Unlucky girl?” Grace Bennett was so angry she could kill him. She got stuck with an unflattering nickname for no reason at all. What did I ever do to deserve this? She felt so wronged, but since it seemed like he had something on her, she had to swallow it—her pride was more important.
