Linda Parker knocked on the glass door a few times, but there was no response. George Miller then used a voice transmission technique to call out several times, but still got no reaction. Linda Parker said impatiently, “Looks like he’s not home. Check the Skynet and see if you can find his Fei Xing communicator number and contact him. It’s already been six days without rest—what a hassle…”
Although George Miller was more senior than Linda Parker, he had long gotten used to being ordered around by Linda Parker. Upon hearing this, he opened his Fei Xing communicator, connected to the Law Enforcement Bureau’s internal network via the satellites in the sky, and, after going through the duty officer, finally managed to get in touch with Yulin Middle School. After several twists and turns, he finally found Brian Grant’s contact number.
“Beep… beep… beep…” After George Miller dialed Brian Grant’s number, no one answered. He called several more times in a row, but still, no one picked up.
Linda Parker waited for quite a while and still couldn’t reach Brian Grant. Her temper flared, and she said angrily, “Since we can’t see him, it’s his bad luck. When we get back, we’ll just report that this kid’s whereabouts are unknown—very suspicious.”
George Miller, being a bit more honest, knew that if they reported it like that, Brian Grant would be in for a lot of trouble. School was starting in a few days, and if things got complicated, it could ruin his whole future. “Maybe he’s in seclusion cultivating his qi. Let’s wait a bit longer—just treat it as a break.”
Linda Parker wasn’t really a bad person; she just spoke out of irritation and didn’t mean it seriously. Seeing George Miller trying to smooth things over, Linda Parker laughed, “Brother Mi, I didn’t realize you were such a good person! Haha…”
George Miller looked miserable—he seemed over a hundred years old, but in reality, he was only in his forties. Given the Empire’s average lifespan of 150 years, he was still a young man. He was also very familiar with those special terms on Skynet.
The term “good person” had long taken on a sarcastic meaning on Skynet. Linda Parker calling him a good person was definitely not a compliment. But George Miller was honest by nature and didn’t mind such jokes. He smiled slightly, “Being a good person isn’t easy…”
Linda Parker realized her teasing had been seen through and was a bit embarrassed when the glass door silently opened. Brian Grant, looking pale and disheveled, slowly walked out and asked, “Do you two need something?”
Linda Parker checked the image on the data chip in her hand and asked, “You’re Brian Grant, right?”
Brian Grant nodded, “Yeah.”
“What were you doing just now? Why didn’t you open the door?” Linda Parker questioned sharply.
Brian Grant replied unhappily, “What’s it to you? Who are you anyway?”
George Miller showed his law enforcer’s jade badge and said, “We’re law enforcers from Tianlin City’s Third Enforcement Team. We’re here today to ask you a few questions. These matters are very important, and you must answer honestly. If you lie, the consequences will be very serious. Do you understand?”
Brian Grant was stunned for a moment, scratched his messy hair, and said, “Not really. Are these important matters related to me?”
Linda Parker reminded him, “Shouldn’t you invite us in?”
“Ah, sorry, sorry, please come in…” Brian Grant said a bit embarrassed, “I ran into some problems cultivating qi these past few days—my mind’s not too clear.”
The room was just over ten square meters, with all four walls covered in soft beige wallpaper. Sunlight streamed in through the west-facing floor-to-ceiling window, and the orange glow of the setting sun filled the small room with a peaceful, tranquil atmosphere.
Against the east wall was a simple single wooden bed, with a pile of bedding tossed carelessly on top. Next to the bed was a light-colored square desk. On the desk sat a universal device connected to Skynet and a purple-heart copper guardian mirror for logging into the Phantom Demon Realm. On the south wall stood a huge spiritual light mirror. In addition, there was a small bathroom on the north side.
The whole room was simply furnished and easy to take in at a glance. George Miller and Linda Parker both shook their heads—this room was so bare, it was only fit for living in. Fortunately, they were just following procedure and weren’t expecting to find anything.
Brian Grant casually rolled up the thin quilt and invited the two to sit on the bed, while he himself sat on the room’s only chair.
Linda Parker didn’t want to waste time and immediately took out pen and paper to ask, “Name? Age?”
Brian Grant looked surprised, “Don’t you already know?”
Linda Parker shot Brian Grant a glare, “Don’t talk nonsense. Just answer what I ask.”
George Miller explained, “It’s standard procedure. Just answer truthfully.”
“Oh.” Brian Grant nodded, half-understanding. “My name is Brian Grant, I’m eighteen years old…”
Suddenly, Linda Parker barked, “Where were you on the night of August 11th, Qinyuan Year 9998?”
Brian Grant seemed startled by Linda Parker’s sharp tone. He hesitated before saying, “August 11th… let me think, what’s today?”
George Miller said, “Today is August 17th.”
Brian Grant slapped his forehead, “Ah, only three days until school starts. I almost missed it! Good thing you guys woke me from my meditation, or I’d be in trouble. I haven’t prepared anything yet. No, I still need to buy some daily necessities. Prices in Tianjing are terrifyingly high…” As he spoke, Brian Grant looked like he was about to get up and leave right away.
Linda Parker snapped, “You’re not going anywhere. Wait until we finish our questions.”
Brian Grant quickly sat back down, “Alright, ask quickly, don’t waste time.”
