Chapter 7

Impromptu, he followed a group of beautiful girls through several shopping malls, and without realizing it, walked into a store. Laughter erupted all around. David Walker was puzzled. Looking closely, he realized he had walked into a women’s lingerie shop! All kinds of lingerie were on display, and David Walker, a man, was standing in the midst of a sea of flowers!

Immediately, his face turned bright red with embarrassment. He had just been focused on following the girls ahead and had completely forgotten to pay attention to his surroundings. The girls in front burst into laughter, making David Walker wish he could find a hole to crawl into!

He hurried out of the lingerie shop, followed by another round of laughter behind him. David Walker didn’t dare linger and fled in embarrassment.

After making a fool of himself, David Walker was in a foul mood when his phone suddenly rang. He took it out and saw an unfamiliar number. David Walker answered irritably, “Who is this?”

“Hello, is this Mr. Walker?”

“Yes, it’s me. What is it?”

“I’m from the ‘Fashion Review’ magazine. We’re notifying you to come for an interview at our office tomorrow afternoon…”

David Walker immediately straightened up and quickly replied in a gentle tone, “Okay, okay, tomorrow afternoon at 2:30, Building B, 17th floor, Qingsong Tower. Okay, okay, I’ll definitely be on time. Thank you…”

Before he could finish thanking them, the other party had already hung up. David Walker was so excited that he didn’t care about anything else and hurried home to prepare for the interview the next day.

Volume One: A Turn of Fortune

Chapter Three: Interview Failure

This ‘Fashion Review’ is a nationally renowned fashion magazine, with pretty good pay and benefits. Most importantly, having work experience here would be a very impressive credential! When David Walker submitted his resume, he never expected to get an interview. Why would they be interested in someone who graduated from a third-rate university and had no editorial experience at all? Unexpectedly, the position he thought was least likely to respond was the first to get back to him.

When he got to the bus stop, David Walker changed his mind. For a fashion magazine, you obviously have to look fashionable. He’d always dressed plainly his whole life—if he didn’t even make it to the interview and got eliminated at first sight, what would be the point? This was the most bustling area of X City, the center of fashion trends. David Walker looked around and ducked into a rather upscale mall.

After an afternoon of shopping, David Walker had a brand new look. Early the next morning, he got a new hairstyle, dyed his hair blond, dressed neatly, and waited at home.

Wearing an outfit worth over three thousand yuan, he sat on a small stool.

He had a quick lunch of instant noodles, too nervous to eat much, afraid that eating too slowly would delay his afternoon interview. Before one o’clock, carrying a black briefcase, he left the house. To save time, he splurged on a taxi.

Qingsong Tower was a very distinctive office building, with four towers of varying heights, like four giant swords of gray and silver thrusting into the sky. When David Walker was still in school, he especially envied those who worked in such high-end office buildings. Coming from a small place, he didn’t have big ambitions—just being a white-collar worker would make him content.

When he stood under the elevator in Building B of Qingsong Tower, it was only 1:30, a full hour early. He pressed the elevator button and went up to the seventeenth floor. With a “ding,” the elevator doors opened to a wide corridor painted in a very fashionable silvery gray with a hint of purple.

David Walker’s eyes were dazzled by the silvery gray and hadn’t quite adjusted. He carefully stepped out of the elevator and found several people standing in the corridor outside. He cautiously asked, “Excuse me, is this the ‘Fashion Review’ magazine office?”

A tall girl nearby glanced at him coldly and asked, “What are you here for?”

David Walker replied with a forced smile, “I’m here for the job interview.”

The girl snorted and said quickly, “Wait, work hasn’t started yet.” She didn’t seem willing to say another word.

David Walker felt awkward and could only stand and wait.

Although the tall girl was dressed flamboyantly, her looks were average. If not for that, David Walker would have already imagined tormenting her a hundred times in his mind to avenge the humiliation just now!

He wondered if everyone at this magazine was so cold and eccentric. If so, working in such an environment would definitely be stifling. David Walker’s mind was a mess, and time passed slowly. He kept checking his watch, a sign of his inner restlessness.

After two o’clock, people started arriving one after another. By 2:30, a beautiful woman in a short skirt came out from the magazine office: “Those here for the interview, follow me.” The group immediately followed her, including the tall girl. David Walker snorted inwardly: So you’re here for the interview too, just like me. I thought you worked for the magazine. No wonder you were so unfriendly earlier—since we’re all competitors, we’re basically enemies, so how could you be friendly?

There were about twelve or thirteen of them, and they were led into a large conference room. The woman who brought them in wasn’t tall, but she had a great figure and her makeup was exquisite. David Walker couldn’t help but feel a bit moved, but since this was a critical moment, he forced himself to focus and listened to her attentively.
