Chapter 11

"Alright, we're here." As she spoke, the two of them arrived at a small office, which contained only a desk and a chair. "This is your workspace, specially set up just for you. Look, all those reporters and editors outside work together in one room, but you have it pretty good." She gave a sly smile and leaned close to David Walker's ear: "This was personally arranged by the deputy chief editor, so it seems she thinks highly of you!" Her warm breath brushed against David Walker's ear, making him feel ticklish.

Emily Smith smiled. The people in the editorial department were all very open-minded. From Emily Smith's expression, David Walker could tell she must be guessing that he was fantasizing about the deputy chief editor again. But this time, she was wrong—just now, that moment of "intimate whispering" had already set David Walker's imagination running wild.

"Alright, now let me tell you about your job." Emily Smith walked a circle around his office. "You don't have any specific duties. Just do whatever the deputy chief editor asks you to do. Understand?" David Walker nodded, then suddenly asked, "Why do you always mention the deputy chief editor? What about the chief editor?" Emily Smith smiled, "I forgot to tell you, the chief editor is the investor, basically the boss, and usually doesn't come here. So the deputy chief editor is actually the one in charge."

"Okay, I'm leaving now. You tidy up a bit. If anything comes up, the deputy chief editor will contact you." She pointed at the telephone on the desk. David Walker nodded.

He tidied up a bit—though there wasn't much to clean, as the place was already spotless. He put his briefcase on the chair. Since there was no coat rack in the office, he could only hang his jacket on the chair after taking it off. Not wanting to stand, he just left it there.

He sat there the whole morning. When lunchtime came, his colleagues gradually headed out. Emily Smith came over to invite him to eat together. Emily Smith, like a big sister, led him around the cafeteria, explaining all the ins and outs of the place. So, in the afternoon, he spent another few hours just sitting around.

Although his first day at work was a bit disappointing, he was still happy to have met a beauty like Emily Smith, and to see her every day from now on. Still, he found it odd: why hire someone and then not give them anything to do, just letting them sit idle all day? After all, they had to pay him a salary every day—wasn't that a waste?

David Walker squeezed onto a bus and returned to his place, tossed his things on the bed, and washed his face. Although the office building had central air conditioning and was nice and cool, it was a different story outside—after a crowded bus ride, he was drenched in sweat. He sniffed himself, took off his clothes, rinsed off with cold water, changed into fresh clothes, and got ready to go out for dinner.

Just as he was about to leave, there was a knock at the door. David Walker checked the date on his phone—it wasn't time to pay rent yet, so why was the landlord here again? David Walker was annoyed and resolved to find a new place to live.

He had no relatives or friends in this city, so apart from the landlord, no one would come looking for him.

He opened the door, but standing outside wasn't the chubby landlord, but a young man he didn't recognize. "Who are you looking for?" David Walker asked. The man was dressed in a sharp suit, with neatly polished shoes—clearly expensive. "I'm looking for you," the man said. David Walker was taken aback. "Me? But I don't think I know you."

The man smiled slightly. "Let me introduce myself. My name is Grace Carter." David Walker, feeling puzzled, shook his hand. The other man's grip was surprisingly strong—just a light squeeze felt like an iron clamp on his hand. David Walker frowned. The man quickly let go. "Sorry, I didn't mean to."

Looking at this strange visitor, David Walker was confused. "What can I do for you?" Grace Carter said, "Actually, it's not me looking for you—someone else wants to see you." "Where is he?"

Grace Carter didn't answer, but instead asked, "You haven't eaten yet, right? Let's go out and talk over dinner." David Walker nodded, "Alright then."

Downstairs, Grace Carter opened the door of a black Lincoln sedan and said to David Walker, "Please get in." David Walker had never ridden in such a fancy car before and felt a bit awkward. Sigh, people from small towns just aren't used to this. Seeing David Walker's reaction, Grace Carter couldn't help but smile. David Walker climbed into the car, blushing to himself—he'd embarrassed himself again.

Grace Carter started the car and slowly drove onto the street. He drove very smoothly—maybe because the car was good—but David Walker still felt uneasy sitting inside.

After more than half an hour, the car stopped in front of a luxurious hotel. "We're here." The doorman opened the car door for David Walker. As he got out, the dazzling lights made David Walker dizzy. It took him a while to adjust before he could make out the words on the side: Jinyue VIP Hotel.

David Walker felt nervous inside. This was one of only three five-star hotels in X City. It was said that a meal here could easily cost ten thousand yuan. David Walker followed behind Grace Carter like a country bumpkin, sticking close, afraid of getting lost.
