Chapter 13

The food cart was pushed in and placed on a small dining table, which was carried over by two waiters and set between the two of them. “Heh, you haven’t eaten yet, so just have a little something.” David Walker looked at the exquisite dishes and thought to himself: This is just a little something?

Thomas Moore picked up his chopsticks, took only one bite, and the waiters poured drinks for both of them before leaving. David Walker didn’t stand on ceremony either, thinking, whether you’re being genuine or not, I’ll eat first—no way I’m coming here for nothing. He rolled up his sleeves and dug in. In no time at all, the small table of dishes was swept clean. Thomas Moore watched the way he ate, shaking his head repeatedly, thinking to himself: Is it right or wrong to recruit someone so lustful and gluttonous into our Kongtong Sect?

The sect leader had given orders, so no matter what, he could only do his best. Seeing that David Walker had finished eating, Thomas Moore asked with a smile, “So, are you full now?” In fact, David Walker wasn’t full—he was just getting into the meal when it was gone! “Heh, yes, I’m full.” After all, David Walker wasn’t thick-skinned enough.

Thomas Moore said, “Alright, since you’re full, let’s get down to business. You’ve seen my abilities—not to brag, but when you reach my level, even bullets can’t hurt you!” This was a real temptation for David Walker, who stared in amazement and said, “So, you mean, if you wanted to rob a bank, no one could stop you?” Thomas Moore was floored: How is this kid’s head full of mischief? The moment I mention being bulletproof, he thinks of robbing a bank? Why not think about punishing evil and helping the weak?

What he didn’t know was that David Walker was terrified of being poor, so whenever he thought of special abilities, his first thought was how to use them to make money. Thomas Moore nodded awkwardly, deciding to change the subject. “Aren’t you curious why you were hired by ‘Fashion Review’?”

That was something David Walker was genuinely curious about. Seeing his astonished face, Thomas Moore knew he’d hit the mark. He smiled and said, “You know very well how your interview went. But why would a powerful magazine like ‘Fashion Review’ hire you? Today’s your first day at work, right?” David Walker quickly nodded, “Yes, that’s right.”

“I was surprised too—why would they hire a graduate from a third-rate university like me? If they wanted, I’m sure they could easily recruit master’s or PhD graduates, right?” David Walker seemed to catch on: “Could it be you guys were behind this… oh, I mean, you helped me out?”

Thomas Moore looked proud: “That’s right. If we hadn’t secretly given you a hand, do you think you could have gotten into that magazine?” David Walker wasn’t stupid, and immediately asked, “But why would you help me? We’re not related at all.” Thomas Moore said, “It’s actually very simple, just as I said earlier—we hope you’ll join our Kongtong Sect. As long as you agree, our sect is powerful, and in the future, you’ll have all the good food and drink you want—anything you desire!”

Thomas Moore couldn’t help but feel awkward saying this—it didn’t sound like a prestigious sect recruiting a disciple, but more like a gang leader recruiting a brother. The awkwardness in his heart was hard to describe. Thomas Moore pushed aside his discomfort, thinking only of completing the sect leader’s task and never seeing this shameless kid again.

David Walker thought for a moment. “Are you telling the truth?” Thomas Moore nodded. David Walker was skeptical: “But how do I know you’re telling the truth?” Thomas Moore said, “The fact that you got into ‘Fashion Review’ is proof, isn’t it? If you don’t believe me, I can have them fire you tomorrow.” This threat worked—David Walker quickly said, “No, no, that’s not what I meant.”

It had been so hard to find such a good job—he couldn’t afford to lose it. Thomas Moore smiled inwardly, but said aloud, “So, have you made up your mind? Not just anyone gets this opportunity—you’re truly lucky. If you miss this chance, there won’t be another.” Seeing David Walker still hesitating, he pressed further: “Our Kongtong Sect is not only powerful in the cultivation world, but also in the secular world. We have people in the central government, and in the business world, we can stir up storms. As long as you agree, you’ll at least be the president of a corporation.”

David Walker’s eyes lit up. “Really?” “Of course it’s true!” David Walker was so excited he was about to agree, when suddenly someone outside the window said, “Kongtong Sect doing this is a bit out of line, isn’t it?”

David Walker was so startled he fell to the floor—this was the twelfth floor! There was nothing outside the window, so how did someone climb up twelve stories? Seeing David Walker’s predicament, Thomas Moore frowned. The window opened from the outside, and in came a young man in a white shirt, a casual smile on his face.

Thomas Moore said coldly, “So it’s Senior Reed from Emei. What are you doing here?” David Walker thought he’d misheard—Thomas Moore was clearly much older, yet he called the man “senior brother.” Senior Reed still wore that lazy smile, casually sitting on the sofa to the side. “Junior Moore, the bearer of the Heavenly Pearl belongs to everyone. Your Kongtong Sect can’t monopolize him, can you?”
