Chapter 14

John Archer sighed and interjected.

“Robert Grant brother, to be honest, though I am but a mere mortal, my heart is still with the world. When the six monsters appeared one after another, I went to investigate them all at the first opportunity, and... I killed three of them.”

“Killed three??” William Dawson exclaimed in astonishment, “How could you, as a mortal, possibly kill three monsters?”

“Though I am a mortal, I grew up in the mountains and am highly skilled with the bow. The Zaochi and the Fengtun are just beasts to me, not a threat at all. In Sanglin, I shot the Fengtun. In the fields of Chouhua, I shot the Zaochi. As for Dafeng, I killed it in the marshes of Qingqiu, with the help of a ‘friend.’”

“A friend...?” There was so much information that William Dawson couldn’t process it all at once.

John Archer actually had a friend whose strength was unfathomable...

“What about the remaining monsters?”

“Yayu has already promised me that it won’t appear before people for a while. Xiuzhe has also changed its name and gone into hiding. Now, the only monster left in the world is Jiuying.”

“Good, that’s great. Let’s go kill Jiuying now!” William Dawson suddenly felt that he was just one step away from completing his mission.

“Don’t say such foolish things, Robert Grant brother.” John Archer interrupted, “Jiuying was born at the dawn of heaven and earth. It’s a true fiend, with the body of an ox, the tail of a dragon, and nine heads. It can spray water and spit fire. No mortal could possibly be its match.”

“Uh...” William Dawson could tell right away that this thing was not to be trifled with. “You... don’t you have that friend...?”

“My friend?” John Archer raised an eyebrow, as if suddenly remembering something, then looked at William Dawson and asked seriously, “Robert Grant brother, my friend said that if anyone comes looking for him, I should ask them a question on his behalf. If they can answer, I’ll take them to see him.”

William Dawson pondered for a moment. This person was so mysterious—maybe he was the real immortal.

“What’s the question?”

John Archer looked into William Dawson’s eyes and said very seriously, “To quell the chaos.”

“To quell the chaos?”

What’s that? Some kind of code?

John Archer looked at William Dawson with great anticipation, but William Dawson’s mind was completely blank.

“Sister Qianqiu, have you heard this phrase before? Is there a second half to it?”

William Dawson whispered to Charles Cooper, but Charles Cooper didn’t answer.

Legend Administration Bureau.

Charles Cooper stared blankly at the screen, her mouth wide open.

The Black and White Impermanence also slowly stood up.

Black Impermanence James Foster muttered slowly, “To quell the chaos, one must win the battle.”

“Heh...” White Impermanence Edward Bennett gave a bitter laugh. “Old Harris, Old Harris, you lied to us.”

David Harris slowly walked over, smiling as he asked, “How did I lie?”

James Foster pointed at the screen and turned back, saying, “Your precious disciple ‘Zhan Qisheng’—how did you report him back then? You told us that Warren Smith had already transcended heaven and earth, no longer within the five elements. We really couldn’t find his soul, so we recorded it as you said. But he... he’s clearly still in the legend!”

“Is that so? Little Warren is still in the legend...” Old Harris stroked his beard and asked, “Then please explain to me, is this legend considered ‘within heaven and earth,’ or ‘within the five elements’?”

Black Impermanence gritted his teeth and stood up, and the entire Legend Administration Bureau began to tremble slightly.

“So you were playing us on purpose? If Warren Smith is in the legend, how could William Dawson possibly complete his mission!? You knew he was inside all along, didn’t you?”

“Old Eight, sit down.” Edward Bennett rarely put away his smile and said seriously to James Foster, “Don’t forget, for us to hold our positions today, Old Harris contributed a lot.”

Black Impermanence slowly sat down, calmed himself, and said to David Harris, “Sorry, Old Harris, it’s just... just that man...”

At the mention of “Warren Smith,” Black Impermanence’s eyes filled with an irrepressible hatred, as if he and this person could not coexist.

“Don’t worry, James.” David Harris said with a chuckle, “Who says Little Warren will definitely obstruct the mission? Didn’t he also help kill a fiend?”

Black Impermanence said nothing more.

Charles Cooper turned back and asked, “Director, what should we do? Should we let William Dawson go find Warren Smith?”

“For now, we can’t let the two of them meet.” David Harris said, “Just make up a code for William Dawson.”

...

William Dawson listened for a long time, then quietly confirmed with Charles Cooper, “Is this for real, Sister Qianqiu? Is this code reliable?”

“Don’t worry, just say it as I told you.”

After hearing this, William Dawson felt confident. He looked up at John Archer, gave a cold laugh, and said, “Your friend is quite mischievous. While mortals may not know this kind of code, I am an immortal. For immortals, this code is as common as blinking. Listen up.”

“Mm.” John Archer looked at William Dawson with great anticipation.

William Dawson curled his lips in pride and declared:

“To quell the chaos, one must eat well.”

...

It wasn’t the first time John Archer had curled his toes in embarrassment.

Why could this person in front of him make up nonsense with such confidence?

“So... so? Is it... not quite right?” William Dawson noticed John Archer’s subtle expression and asked tentatively.
