“Robert Grant brother...” John Archer rubbed his temples and said, “It really is a bit different...”
“Hey, hey, hey, Charles Cooper! What’s going on here?”
William Dawson cursed inwardly, but could only patiently explain to John Archer.
“As fellow immortals, I... I might not be in the same unit as your friend. Different units have different codes...”
Chapter 6: Battle for Victory
“Since that’s the case... I can’t let you go looking for my friend...” John Archer said with some difficulty, “That’s an agreement between him and me...”
“Forget it...” William Dawson said helplessly, “Even without him, we still have a way.”
“Robert Grant brother, do you have any good ideas?” John Archer asked.
“Of course.” William Dawson leaned against the wall, gazing deeply at the ground. After thinking for a while, he asked, “Have you ever heard of the Victorious Fighting Buddha, Sun Wukong?”
“Victorious... something Wukong...?” John Archer asked, “Who’s that?”
“Huh?” William Dawson was a bit stunned, “Sun Wukong, you don’t know?”
As soon as he finished, William Dawson regretted it. Where was this? Was this the era where everyone had heard of “Sun Wukong”? This was ancient times!
“Sigh...” William Dawson let out a helpless sigh, “Alright, never mind about Sun Wukong. Just take me to find Jiu Ying, and I’ll kill it.”
“This...”
After spending the day together, John Archer still couldn’t quite figure out William Dawson’s strength.
John Archer looked up at the sky full of suns and said to William Dawson, “Alright, in that case, I’ll take you out tomorrow. Jiu Ying is at the Fierce Waters of the Northern Di in the Ao Lai Kingdom, not far from here—a full day’s journey.”
William Dawson also glanced out the window.
Leaving tomorrow?
These suns seemed like they would never set. How could you even tell today from tomorrow?
The sun... setting?
“Huh?”
William Dawson stared carefully at the suns.
Why are there only nine left?
He thought it was the dazzling sunlight making him see things, but after counting carefully, there really were only nine.
“John Archer!” William Dawson asked in confusion, “How many suns were there in the sky originally?”
“Robert Grant brother, are you confused? There was only ever one sun in the sky.”
“No, that’s not it.” William Dawson grew anxious and pointed to the sky, “How many suns should there be in the sky right now!?”
“There are ten right now.” John Archer still didn’t quite get it.
“Then why are there only nine now?” William Dawson felt as if he’d caught a clue, but it was so faint that it would snap with the slightest tug. If there were only nine suns left, then the story of ‘Yi shooting down nine suns’ couldn’t hold.
“Ten, nine, what’s the difference? Sometimes there are ten suns, sometimes nine.” John Archer said indifferently, “To us, isn’t it all the same?”
William Dawson lowered his head and pondered carefully. These suns, sometimes ten, sometimes nine?
Could it be...?
One sun rises and sets as usual, but the others do not?
But that’s just not scientific!
Wait, since he was already in the story of Yi shooting down the nine suns, did science even matter anymore?
No, it did.
The sun rising and setting was correct, but why didn’t the other suns do so? Did they just float in the sky? Even when it was dark, they still illuminated the whole land.
Why couldn’t John Archer shoot down the last sun?
For the first time, William Dawson tried to explain the legend scientifically. If this reasoning was correct, then the nine in the sky couldn’t possibly be suns!
But those giant fireballs, just like the sun—what were they really? Even if they weren’t suns, could a mortal shoot them down?
“Robert Grant brother, are you alright?”
“I’m fine. I just feel like there’s something I can’t figure out. I need to go back and rest first. We agreed, we’ll set out tomorrow.”
After saying this, William Dawson returned to his room.
Outside, a little boy was hiding in the shadows. Only after seeing William Dawson leave did he slowly walk into the house.
“Yukon?” John Archer smiled when he saw the boy, “What brings you here?”
“Johnny, I feel like that guy called Robert Grant isn’t a good person.” Yukon muttered, head down.
“How could that be?” John Archer pulled the boy over, “There are still more good people in this world. Besides, even though he seems a bit unserious, his heart is with the world—he’s always thinking about shooting suns and fighting monsters.”
Yukon was still a bit dissatisfied, but hearing John Archer say this, he wavered a little.
“Yukon, starting tomorrow, I’ll be going with him to slay Jiu Ying. Can you help me take care of Helen Archer at home?”
“Slay Jiu Ying?” Yukon exclaimed, “Then you must take Little Barry with you!”
“Little Barry?” John Archer shook his head, “No, since I changed Little Barry’s name, I don’t want it to go through things like this anymore. I just want it to live well.”
“But can that guy really defeat Jiu Ying...?”
“Honestly, I don’t know either.” John Archer sighed, “Even if Robert Grant brother doesn’t go, I’d have to go myself sooner or later.”
Yukon stood there, aggrieved, not knowing what to say.
“John.” Helen Archer slowly came out from the back room, “Are you leaving?”
