Chapter 5

This is a large city called Alto, located near the Dark Mountains, known as the City of Sacred Chants—prosperous and full of opportunities.

Currently, the place I live is the Adelan District, a slum area of Alto, and it seems that due to several days of serious illness, I have lost my steady job helping to carry goods in the market district.

Soon, the four of them arrived at the small house where Logan Bennett lived.

Aunt Eliza Clark originally wanted to invite Logan Bennett to her house for dinner, but Logan Bennett, who urgently needed some peace and quiet, politely declined her.

As they parted, Evan Parker quietly and curiously asked Logan Bennett, “Brother Logan Bennett, when did your dream become to be a musician?”

“Just now.” Logan Bennett numbly moved his lips.

Evan Parker let out a long “oh.”

Entering the house and locking the door behind him, Logan Bennett sat down absentmindedly, his elbows propped on the wooden table, his head buried deep in his arms.

“I actually transmigrated!”

“And it’s a world with supernatural powers.”

“If I’m not careful, I could end up tied to a stake and burned alive.”

The emotions stirred up by witnessing the witch’s tragic fate finally erupted now that he was alone—Logan Bennett was shocked, terrified, and scared.

Of course, as someone who hadn’t experienced much in life, Logan Bennett was a bit introverted and easily panicked when things happened, but under that immense pressure, he had actually managed to stay calm until he got back, only now unable to suppress it any longer.

It must be said, environment and experience are what truly temper a person.

As time passed and darkness gradually fell, Logan Bennett also adapted to the fear and calmed down. Since he had already transmigrated, being anxious, worried, or scared would do no good—he could only proceed cautiously, step by step. If he died again this time, there might not be another chance for such a fortunate transmigration.

Once his emotions settled and he suppressed his longing and worry for his parents and friends, just as he was about to plan his life, Logan Bennett immediately felt a surge of hunger, as if a fire was burning in his stomach, saliva constantly pooling in his mouth.

Swallowing hard, filling his stomach became the top priority. Logan Bennett interrupted his thoughts and walked over to the only crate in the house where things could be stored.

Inside the shabby crate, aside from some clothes, Logan Bennett saw two black, bread-like foods and seven brass coins gleaming with a metallic luster.

His stomach had taken over for his brain—Logan Bennett had no energy to think about anything else. He grabbed a piece of black bread and took a bite.

Crunch! Logan Bennett quickly covered his mouth with his hand—his teeth almost broke. Was this bread or a stick?

He sniffed it and could barely confirm it was indeed bread, just so hard it could knock out an adult.

Forcing himself to endure the hunger, Logan Bennett rummaged through the crate and found a flint. After several failed attempts, he finally managed to light the wood under the stove and began to properly toast the bread.

“Braised pork, spicy chicken wings, steamed beef, kung pao chicken…” As he toasted the bread, Logan Bennett muttered the names of delicious foods, unable to stop his mouth from watering.

Once the black bread softened a little, Logan Bennett couldn’t help but start gnawing on it. The taste was so awful, it was like chewing on wood shavings.

But Logan Bennett still wolfed it down, and while eating, couldn’t help but sigh, “If I have to eat this kind of food every day, I’d rather be dead. No, I have to make money, I have to get out of this life as a pauper.”

“If only I could learn divine arts and become a bishop or priest…” Lost in endless fantasies, Logan Bennett recalled the well-dressed bishops and priests he’d seen in front of the church, remembered their supernatural powers and the noble status that came with them, and couldn’t help but feel his heart race. “But, in my situation, wouldn’t going to the church be suicide? Is there any other way to gain supernatural powers? Like that divine grace?”

“If I can’t obtain such powers, will what I’ve learned be of any use in this world?”

Once his hunger was sated, Logan Bennett began to seriously analyze his path to survival. But just as he recalled the knowledge he’d learned, Logan Bennett suddenly realized that something seemed to have appeared in his mind.

Upon closer inspection, Logan Bennett couldn’t help but widen his eyes: “Aren’t these the books from the library? Did they transmigrate with me?”

There was actually an entire comprehensive library of books in his mind. They didn’t feel like memories, but more like projections, each book neatly categorized and available for Logan Bennett to browse.

Curious, Logan Bennett browsed through the books at random, but to his confusion, found that the vast majority of them couldn’t be opened.

Chapter 3: Late at Night

Even transmigrating had already happened, so having a library in his mind wasn’t all that strange or hard to accept. But the fact that a large portion of the books in his mind couldn’t be opened and their contents couldn’t be seen left Logan Bennett very puzzled.

Trying hard to stay calm so that the library in his mind wouldn’t become too “distant” to touch due to emotional fluctuations, Logan Bennett flipped through the books one by one, making note of which books could be opened and which could not.

“History books—all can be opened.”

“Economics books—no problem.”
