Chapter 9

After successfully running to the church and bringing over Benjamin Wright, Gary Miller, and the others, Logan Bennett felt much more at ease. With a priest and guards present, getting rid of the wraiths and ghosts shouldn’t be too difficult. Besides, no matter how hard it was, it wouldn’t be up to an ordinary person like himself, whose body had only just recovered, to do the heavy lifting. So, when he heard Benjamin Wright’s words at this moment, Logan Bennett’s mind immediately buzzed: “He actually wants me to purify the wraith?! I—I’m just an ordinary person!”

Seeing the look of surprise and resistance on Logan Bennett’s face, Benjamin Wright asked gently and kindly, “You’re unwilling?”

There was not the slightest hint of malice, yet Logan Bennett shivered and snapped back to his senses. If he answered that he was unwilling, he might immediately become a corpse. But if he agreed, judging from Benjamin Wright’s words, it seemed he intended to lend him the holy emblem, and most likely two or three guards would go along as well. Dealing with a remnant wraith left behind by a magic apprentice whom Benjamin Wright didn’t seem to take seriously shouldn’t be too dangerous.

Whether Benjamin Wright really disliked the filth of the sewers and didn’t want to go down, or had some other motive, messing up this seemingly simple task would do him no good.

Suppressing the resentment in his heart, Logan Bennett forced a very stiff smile and replied, “Willing to serve the Lord.”

Benjamin Wright didn’t pay any attention to Logan Bennett’s stiffness. He took the holy emblem amulet from his neck with his right hand and handed it to Logan Bennett: “This is the Emblem of Truth. In a moment, I’ll cast a ‘Blessing’ on you. With it, you’ll be able to focus your mind more easily. Then, together with the incantation and by using your mind and fingers to rub and connect with the emblem, you can activate the power of the Lord contained within.”

After suppressing his emotions, Logan Bennett was filled with curiosity about this holy emblem that could perform divine magic.

The emblem was gold-based, engraved with a white cross that emitted a faint glow. Around the cross, in the deep gold, were many crisscrossing lines and patterns—circles, triangles, squares, rectangles—strangely connected together, setting off the cross and making it appear mysterious and solemn.

Holding the emblem in his hand, Logan Bennett immediately felt a gentle, warm power flow through him, soaking into his whole body. Even facing the cool night breeze, he felt as warm as if basking in the sun.

“There are two informal divine spells in the emblem: Light and Minor Healing, each usable three times a day, and three first-level divine spells: Holy Light Shield, Sword of Radiance, and Holy Light Strike, each usable only once a day. All right, listen carefully to their incantations.”

Logan Bennett had no way out and had to go down, so the power of divine magic was especially important to him. He listened intently as Benjamin Wright taught him the incantations.

The incantations were all short syllabic words, but the intonation was extremely awkward. It took a great deal of effort for Logan Bennett to barely avoid making mistakes.

Benjamin Wright gave a barely noticeable nod and extended his right hand.

This time, there was no incantation. A pure white light enveloped Logan Bennett, slowly fading away, making Logan Bennett feel his body fill with strength, healthier than ever before, and his mind focused and sharp, able to hear voices from even farther away.

“The priest actually let Logan Bennett go down, and even gave him the holy emblem?”

“Didn’t you hear? It’s the priest’s mercy, letting Logan Bennett go down to wash away his sins.”

“Praise the Lord, praise the priest.”

Logan Bennett still didn’t know much about the world, so after receiving the “Blessing,” he quietly waited to the side as Benjamin Wright cast “Blessing” on Gary Miller and the other two guards.

Each time Benjamin Wright finished casting Blessing, there was an interval of about two to three seconds.

After all this, Benjamin Wright looked at Logan Bennett and the others: “Paul Baker will guard the secret passage entrance. Gary Miller, Hudson Grant, Corey Allen, you three go down with Logan Bennett.”

Then, his expression became serious as he drew a cross on his chest: “May the Lord’s glory protect you.”

“Only truth endures!”

The three guards, Gary Miller and the others, looked a bit excited and answered loudly. Logan Bennett was a beat late, unsure whether to answer or not.

Fortunately, Benjamin Wright didn’t mind, and watched as the four of them slowly walked into the secret passage leading to the sewers.

The other guard, Paul Baker, lowered his voice and asked the question that had puzzled him for a long time: “Lord Benjamin Wright, why him?”

With the incantations and the holy emblem, he and Gary Miller and the other guards could also activate the divine magic within, though each activation was a bit slower than Lord Benjamin Wright and other priests, apprentice priests, or even those evil sorcerers. But even so, it was still better than that kid who knew nothing and whose body hadn’t even been properly trained. If Lord Benjamin Wright didn’t want to go down, he could have given the emblem to Gary Miller, Hudson Grant, or Corey Allen.

Benjamin Wright looked at the entrance to the secret passage, covering his nose and mouth with his right hand, his voice low and soft: “His mental strength is slightly higher than normal, so he can better activate the divine magic in the emblem.”

“But he’s too old—no value for cultivation.”

As soon as they entered the secret passage, a stench mixed from countless odors rushed at them. Logan Bennett couldn’t help but gag twice.
