Brian Clark, currently the United Nations biotechnology technical advisor and also the chief technician of the Eden Project. He should have absolutely no free time, yet now he has appeared in Shanghai, China—there must be something wrong!
“Dad!” David Clark called out, then walked over to Brian Clark's side, tears already welling up in his eyes.
Brian Clark smiled and patted David Clark's head, saying, “Silly child, why are you crying?” But it’s true, it’s worth crying—I haven’t been back for four or five years, have I? Sigh.
“Dad, how come you’re back?” David Clark wiped his tears and asked Brian Clark. No matter what, it’s impossible for his father to come back at this time—there’s still half a year left until the Eden Project is finished.
“Yunyang, I have something very important to tell you. I’ll tell you first, but you must be mentally prepared, understand?” Brian Clark gazed deeply at David Clark, his eyes holding something David Clark couldn’t fathom.
Seeing his father’s seriousness, David Clark nodded as well.
“Let’s start with the Eden Project—no, actually, I should start with supernatural abilities.” Huh? Supernatural abilities? Is Dad joking?
“You might not believe it, but ever since humans began keeping records, no matter the ethnicity or country, there have always been accounts of this—like magic in Europe, spells and so-called inner strength in China, secret arts and shikigami in Japan, the divine powers of Native Americans, and so on. There are many such things. And—don’t make that exaggerated face.” Brian Clark walked to the window, lit a cigarette, and started smoking.
“Then, in 2014, the U.S. government discovered a ruin somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. It changed the government’s distrust of supernatural abilities, and thus began the so-called Eden Project…”
“Wait, wait. Dad, didn’t the Eden Project just start a year ago? And is it okay to tell me these secrets?” His father must have something important this time, otherwise he wouldn’t be telling him all this.
Brian Clark looked out the window, always with a sense of foreboding. Please don’t let them find out. “That’s just a government cover-up. This Eden Project concerns all of humanity.” After speaking, he took a deep breath.
“The so-called Eden Project is about extracting an enhancer from an unknown organism discovered in those Pacific ruins, to strengthen the human body until it can use supernatural abilities, allowing humanity to evolve. But this project could either send humanity to heaven, or to hell.” Brian Clark sighed.
David Clark asked, “Why? Isn’t that a good thing? If everyone has supernatural abilities, what’s the problem?”
“No… it’s just—sigh, don’t ask about that now. What I need to tell you is, I’m going to put you into stasis. I’ll bring you back after the project is safely over. So… goodbye…” Brian Clark once again showed that expression of parting, with a deep fatherly love in it.
“Huh? What…” David Clark felt a numbness at the back of his head, his vision suddenly went black, and he lost consciousness. Behind David Clark stood a very tall man, holding a long needle in his hand—it seemed he was the one who knocked David Clark out.
“Won’t he blame you? Even if it’s for his own good!” the man asked.
Brian Clark gently stroked David Clark’s hair, muttering to himself, “Yes, will you blame me? Even if it’s for your own good!” His tone was so desolate and bleak.
Who can really know? At the very least, the gears of fate have already begun to turn, somewhere beyond human perception.
Chapter Two: Eight Hundred Years of Slumber
It was dark before his eyes, but it made him feel so at ease, so warm, like being in a mother’s embrace. No wonder some American scientists believe that sleep and darkness are the best and ultimate destination for humans. Yes, just like now, making one want to stay here forever.
Huh? Wait, where am I? Why do I feel so at ease here? What happened to me?
David Clark opened his eyes and saw that everything around him was unfamiliar—a place he had never seen before. He also felt dizzy.
Slowly, he began to regain his senses, recalling some things that had happened before, including the stabbing pain that made him lose consciousness. At this moment, he was naked, soaking in a faintly glowing liquid, and the glass cover above his head had already opened.
Could it be…? A chill ran through his heart. He hurriedly climbed out of the liquid, only to discover that this was a huge machine. The middle part was the liquid he had been soaking in, and the lower part was opening, revealing some clothes and other items inside.
He hastily put on the clothes, finding among them a wristwatch—ordinary in style, nothing special about it. The most important thing now was: where was this place? What exactly had happened?
What his father said before—if he really had been preserved, then this must be the place where he was kept? No way, oh my god!
It was a spacious room. Aside from the huge machine that had preserved him, there was nothing else. Judging by the design, it looked more like a laboratory, except the floor was covered in dust and there were cracks in the walls, as if the building had stood for many years.
