A cavalry squad of over a hundred men was stationed on the western side of the ruins at this moment. This squad was part of the force pursuing William Scott and his companions, but all of them were seasoned and battle-hardened soldiers.
Perhaps after days of pursuit and a day of guarding here, anyone would be exhausted. Yet, tired as they were, no one dared to let down their guard. Relax? Are you joking? Do you know who he is? He is the leader of the Order of Light, the Moonblade Swordsman William Scott. Are you out of your mind? That was probably what everyone here was thinking.
At that moment, several sentries simultaneously blew their horns—the signal for the enemy’s approach.
Then, the soldiers scrambled onto their horses, though their minds were likely still preoccupied with whether William Scott was leading the attack. Of course, they were also preparing to either flee or face the enemy.
“Don’t panic. Follow Captain Reed’s orders. As long as you don’t get close to William Scott, seize the chance to snatch the princess. Remember, whoever accomplishes this will be granted a fief of ten thousand households and rewarded with ten thousand gold coins.” After saying this, the squad leader took a signal arrow from his coat and shot it into the sky.
Gradually, William Scott and his group appeared in sight. Strangely, though William Scott’s side had fewer people and all were infantry, when facing more than twice their number of cavalry, they actually lined up in a straight horizontal formation, as if to meet the cavalry’s charge head-on. Was this the formation arranged by William Scott? The man as renowned as Captain Dawson...
“Charge!” At the command, the cavalry began their assault on the enemy.
Suddenly, a loud noise erupted—a sound that had vanished from Earth for eight hundred years now rang out once more.
Weapons from the 2030s, with power far beyond everyone’s imagination, in just a few dozen seconds, left the ground littered with the corpses of over a hundred cavalrymen. The relics unearthed from these ancient ruins were truly formidable.
These weapons were indeed powerful. Even ordinary soldiers who had never experienced the existence of magic, once armed with such weapons, could probably reach the level of a warrior who could take on a hundred foes—just a notch below my own knightly level of one against a thousand. It was truly terrifying—dozens of warrior-level fighters appearing out of nowhere. William Scott gazed at the field of corpses before him.
While everyone was stunned, David Clark was equally shocked.
“Why? Why did it have to come to this? There were better ways to handle it, like just killing their horses and then surrounding them. Wouldn’t that have worked...?”
Everyone looked at him in surprise, but only the princess’s eyes shone with a glimmer of light as she looked at him.
William Scott walked over to his side, patted his shoulder, and said, “This is war...” The words trailed off, but the meaning was clear. No matter how capable he was, he was still just a child.
A bit of clarity returned to David Clark’s eyes. He nodded lightly and said, “Let’s go.”
Everyone rode the enemy’s horses at a gallop for half the morning, then, at David Clark’s suggestion, they stopped to rest and regroup.
“We don’t have spare horses to switch to, so we can’t push ourselves too hard. Besides, I think everyone must be hungry. Why don’t we rest here, eat something, and wait for the enemy?”
Whether it was the earlier display of firepower or the strategy set afterward, both showed David Clark’s extraordinary nature. He also had a special aura about him that made people want to follow him, so everyone felt a strange sense of trust in his words.
They didn’t have to wait long before a cloud of dust appeared in the distance, and over three hundred cavalrymen slowly came into view.
Seeing this, David Clark’s group once again formed a straight horizontal line.
When the enemy charged, another fierce volley ensued. By the time everyone’s ammunition was spent, only a dozen or so enemies remained, and their horses had all been shot dead, leaving only the men reaching the front of the formation.
Suddenly, among those dozen or so, a black shadow flashed, darting toward the princess with lightning speed. At the same time, a white flash shot out from David Clark’s side—“Clang!”—the sound of two swords clashing.
The movement was so fast it was like lightning; everyone only saw some shadows, and even though David Clark had martial arts training and faster reflexes than most, he could only make out two human figures.
David Clark was filled with inexplicable awe. My god, what kind of speed is this! Far beyond human limits. The world’s top athletes and martial artists from my time would seem like children before these two.
“I think, if that tall, handsome guy went to my era, haha, he’d probably cause a worldwide sensation! Like Superman!”
After exchanging a blow, the black shadow retreated several steps, and everyone finally saw that she was a beautiful young woman of about 21 or 22.
At this moment, her face was slightly pale, but it only accentuated her cold and proud demeanor. Her features were exquisite, her skin like snow, her icy pride bone-deep, her long black hair and tight black armor making her look like a celestial maiden or a black lotus in bloom.
She stared at William Scott and said, “Please, Captain Scott, grant Emily Reed death.” Lin, if I must die, let it be by your sword...
The white flash was William Scott in his silver battle armor. His longsword was still sheathed; he had blocked Emily Reed’s strike with just the scabbard. He, too, kept his gaze on Emily Reed, then slowly turned his head and said, “Qing... Captain Reed, please take your men and leave... Go now, farewell...”
