“It’s better to share joy with others than to enjoy it alone. Drinking by oneself in a room—how could that compare to the lively atmosphere here? I’ve heard that Master Foster is always magnanimous, so I’m sure he won’t mind making room for us siblings in his private chamber, right?”
Charles Bennett was not so easy to deal with. He had gone to great lengths, with Samuel Clark’s help, to sneak into Guanghelou. If he let David Foster talk him out of it with just a few words, wouldn’t all his efforts be for nothing?
“I’d like to see just how long you can hold out.”
Charles Bennett sneered inwardly. He was here precisely to provoke David Foster. No matter how deep Master Foster’s scheming, no matter how patient he was, in the end, Charles Bennett was determined to make him lose his composure.
Hearing Charles Bennett’s words, David Foster’s expression finally changed. He had tried to reason with him, but Charles Bennett was completely unyielding, making it clear he had no intention of leaving.
“Master Bennett, if I’m not mistaken, I don’t recall inviting you here, do I? I’m not a petty person, but I’m afraid I’ll have to ask you to leave.”
There was already a blaze of anger in David Foster’s eyes.
“Heh, of course I know you didn’t invite me, but I simply couldn’t stay away! Otherwise, wouldn’t that be disrespectful to Master Foster?”
Charles Bennett sneered, then grabbed a wine bottle from in front of a nearby guest, pulled out the stopper, took a sip without a care, and praised:
“Excellent wine!”
Even with David Foster’s good self-control, his eyelid twitched violently at Charles Bennett’s provocation.
What did he mean by ‘I wasn’t invited, but I couldn’t stay away’?
Did I, David Foster, need you to show me respect?
If it weren’t for the many powerful and noble guests present, David Foster would never have wasted words with this brat—he would have thrown him out long ago.
“Samuel Clark, you bastard, you actually brought them here! I’ll skin you alive!”
David Foster was seething with rage inside.
He knew perfectly well that he’d never had dealings with the youngest son of the The Bennett Family; even if he’d done something, there was no way Charles Bennett could have known. The only way the Charles Bennett siblings could have found this place was if that scoundrel Samuel Clark had leaked the information!
But now was not the time to settle that score!
“Charles Bennett, I’ll ask you one last time—are you really determined to go against me?”
David Foster said sternly.
Whether he left or not, whether he showed respect or not, was meaningless now. Anyone with eyes could see that Charles Bennett was here to cause trouble for him.
“Hmph, David Foster, this is what you call tit for tat!”
Charles Bennett flung the wine cup in his hand, and with a crack, it shattered on the floor.
There was no point in saying anything more—this was the moment when the dagger is revealed!
The banquet instantly became tense and hostile. Even the dullest person could see that these siblings had come for David Foster, deliberately making things difficult for him.
There was just one thing everyone still didn’t understand: who exactly were these two, to dare go against David Foster? After all, in the capital, the The Foster Residence was no ordinary family.
“Charles Bennett? Are you from the The Bennett Family of the capital?”
A cry of surprise rang out as a nobleman at the banquet finally realized Charles Bennett’s identity.
“That’s right!”
Charles Bennett replied crisply.
At this answer, everyone in the room changed their expressions. So these siblings dared to challenge David Foster and even disregard the The Foster Residence—it turned out they were from the The Bennett Family.
If it were just William Bennett, that would be one thing. The Tang Empire was full of martial generals like him. But in the capital, everyone knew that above the The Bennett Family was the Old Mr. Bennett.
That was the one who truly inspired fear!
“So you’re a descendant of the Mr. Harrison! My apologies for not recognizing you.”
“I hope Old Mr. Bennett is well!”
“I’m from the The Carter Family in the capital. My father, George Carter, once received Old Mr. Bennett’s kindness and has always remembered it. If you return, Young Bennett, please tell Old Mr. Bennett that George Carter of the capital hopes he can visit when he has the time!”
…
The way everyone looked at the Charles Bennett siblings changed completely, becoming extremely respectful. In the capital, the title “Mr. Harrison” represented a unique status, and by extension, the Charles Bennett siblings were now seen in a different light.
What had seemed like a simple farce was now something else entirely—if the reclusive Mr. Harrison from the Four Corners Pavilion was going to oppose the The Foster Family, everything was different.
This was not a mess that just anyone, from any family, could get involved in!
Chapter 8: Raising Havoc at Guanghelou
“Master Foster, I just remembered something urgent—I’ll be leaving now!”
“Master Foster, let’s end the banquet here for today. We’ll get together another time!”
…
A nobleman exchanged a few polite words and got up to leave. Then more and more people followed suit.
David Foster’s face was ashen, changing again and again, until it was as black as the bottom of a pot. He had been so careful and patient, hoping not to alarm the guests and to gently persuade the Charles Bennett siblings to leave.
He never expected that, in the end, all his efforts would be for nothing. The gathering he had worked so hard to arrange was ruined by these two siblings.
Though these people said they’d meet again next time, David Foster knew better—there would be no next time. They had “caught the scent,” and for the foreseeable future, they would avoid any association with him.
“Charles Bennett, since you two siblings refuse to leave, then don’t! Someone! Seize them for me—I want to see how the The Bennett Family will explain this!”
David Foster’s eyes blazed with fury. He slammed the table and shot to his feet.
