Chapter 16

William Newman let out an unconscious cry of pain. In the scalding boiling water, all the pores on his body seemed to be forcibly expanded, greedily absorbing the medicinal essence from the water.

His body, already stronger than that of an ordinary child, seemed to inflate like a balloon, slowly swelling once again.

“Crackle!”

Strange noises sounded from his bones and internal organs, as if the flesh and blood all over his body were cheering and screaming.

A faint, visible light screen spread out from physician Edward Howard as the center, enveloping both William Newman and the wooden tub.

“Ahh!”

William Newman suddenly let out a scream of unbearable pain, but his shrill cry seemed unable to penetrate that faint light screen.

The light screen rippled with subtle, water-like waves, as if blocking out all sound, so that those just outside the room—David Newman, Grace Newman, and the others—remained completely unaware.

In Edward Howard’s pupils, it was as if two green ghostly flames had been ignited. He stared intently at William Newman, his excited expression tinged with a hint of awe.

“Hiss!”

Threads of multicolored firelight moved in and out of the pores beneath William Newman’s skin. With each of William Newman’s cries of pain, the once-murky medicinal water in the tub gradually became clear.

It was as if all the precious medicinal essence that Edward Howard had infused into the water was being absorbed bit by bit into William Newman’s flesh and blood through his pores.

And William Newman’s high fever, too, slowly subsided as the medicinal water cleared.

After a long time, as the intense pain gradually faded, William Newman stopped crying out. The faint halo emanating from Edward Howard’s body turned into streams of light and disappeared back into him.

The scalding boiling water had long since cooled and stilled. William Newman, who had been unconscious for three days, opened his eyes as his fever receded.

At that moment, the strange light in Edward Howard’s eyes vanished instantly.

He hunched his body, speaking calmly: “I, Edward Howard, at your grandfather’s invitation, have come especially to help you bring down your fever.”

Still dazed, William Newman asked in confusion, “How many days was I feverish?”

“Three days,” Edward Howard replied in a steady tone.

“Three days?!” William Newman exclaimed in shock, pressing his hands on the tub, about to leap out.

“Crack!”

The sturdy wooden tub, unable to withstand the force of his hands, suddenly shattered.

“Splash!”

As the water spilled out, William Newman stared blankly at the broken planks, his expression strange.

Edward Howard’s expression remained unchanged, as if he had expected this. He said calmly, “Your strange illness is not yet completely cured. You still need to soak in the medicinal essence under my care for another six days.”

William Newman raised his hand, moving his arm casually, instinctively sensing that this body now gave him much more strength than before.

“I feel great. I probably won’t have another fever,” William Newman said carelessly.

“I am the physician. No one else could cure your strange illness—it was I who healed you. So you must trust me and continue the treatment as I say!” Edward Howard said in a tone that brooked no argument.

“Oh, all right,” William Newman scratched his head.

“Mr. Howard, may I come in?” Outside the room, the anxious David Newman, having heard the tub shatter and the conversation between Edward Howard and William Newman, could no longer hold back.

“Come in,” Edward Howard said indifferently.

“Bang!”

David Newman pushed the door open forcefully, and together with the equally anxious Grace Newman, rushed inside.

As soon as he entered, he hurried to William Newman’s side, reaching out to feel William Newman’s wrist. When he found that William Newman’s fever had subsided and his temperature was back to normal, his face lit up with joy.

Without waiting for Edward Howard to say more, he called out, “Julia Harris, give the reward to Mr. Howard!”

The maid Julia Harris, holding a cloth bag filled with gold, silver, a few spirit stones, and medicinal herbs, respectfully handed it to Edward Howard.

Edward Howard took it arrogantly, barely glancing at it, and casually stuffed the bag into his medicine chest, as if he didn’t care about the reward at all.

“Great kindness needs no thanks. I ask only that Mr. Howard stay at the The Newman Family for a few more days, and I will make sure you are well taken care of,” David Newman said sincerely.

“It’s not completely cured yet.” Edward Howard waved his hand, declining David Newman’s hospitality. “For the next six days, I will come at this hour each day. Prepare the tub and hot water in advance. I will use the same method to fully cure your grandson’s strange illness.”

“Not fully cured yet?” David Newman’s face tightened.

“No need to worry too much. He’ll be fine.” Edward Howard looked up slightly, confident. “I said I could cure him, and I will. Today, I have already proven myself to you. You should trust me.”

“Of course! Of course!” David Newman replied quickly, bowing deeply. “Then for the next few days, I’ll trouble Mr. Howard. Since this is your first time in Black Cloud City, you probably haven’t found a place to stay yet? Why not stay at our The Newman Family? Rest assured, I’ll arrange the most comfortable guest room and will not dare neglect you.”

“No need. I prefer peace and quiet, and just want to walk around the city alone.” Edward Howard seemed uninterested in further conversation with David Newman, and after saying this, walked straight out.

“Grandfather, who is that man? And why was I feverish for three days?” After Edward Howard left, William Newman asked in confusion.
