Chapter 10

Grace Foster looked aggrieved, but still held her head high and argued, “Section Chief, it’s not just us who couldn’t get that payment back. So many people before us tried, but not a single one succeeded…”

William Thompson snorted coldly, “Just because others couldn’t collect this debt, does that mean we just give up? Besides, there’s a special directive for this account: whoever can recover the money will get a five percent commission. I’ve been looking out for you, giving you this assignment. If you complete it, you’ll have an outstanding achievement—not only will you get the commission, but you’ll also be made permanent next month. But you’ve really let me down…”

Grace Foster stubbornly held her head high, not bowing her head at William Thompson’s scolding. “Section Chief, you’re clearly making things difficult for me. If it was so easy to collect that debt, you would have done it yourself long ago for that five percent commission. But instead, you sent me, a new employee who just joined the company, and now you’re using this as an excuse not to make me permanent. That’s just unfair!”

There were many employees in Sales Section Six, and seeing this scene, they all watched from a distance—some gloating, some looking sympathetic…

Grace Foster’s direct retort and the crowd of onlookers made William Thompson feel he was losing face. His expression darkened immediately. “Is this how you talk to your superior? Your attitude is the problem…”

“Section Chief…”

A lazy-sounding voice suddenly interrupted William Thompson’s reprimand. He turned around angrily, only to see another thorn in his side, Henry Carter, walking over quickly with a briefcase in hand.

Henry Carter walked up to Grace Foster, and gave a playful wink to her slightly reddened eyes. That little gesture instantly cheered up the previously upset Grace Foster.

“Section Chief, I just heard at the door—you said if Grace Foster and I recover this debt, and achieve this result, Grace Foster can be made permanent, right?”

William Thompson nodded grimly, “Yes, I did say that. But now Grace Foster’s three-month probation is up. If the debt isn’t recovered…”

“No need for ifs.”

Henry Carter grinned, and casually tossed the bag onto the table. “The one million from Kaige Company has already been recovered.”

The bag landed on the table, spilling open and revealing several stacks of bright red bills.

Henry Carter turned to Grace Foster and grinned, “Grace Foster, congratulations, you can finally become a permanent employee.”

A very ordinary-looking briefcase, and the crisp red bills spilling out, caught everyone’s eye in the office.

Was there really a million in that bag?

Did Henry Carter really just carry a million in cash all the way back from Kaige Company to the office?

Wasn’t he afraid of being robbed?

Did they really manage to recover Kaige Company’s debt?

The many employees in Sales Section Six had already been listening in, and this sudden turn of events left them all stunned. They knew just how hard it was to collect this debt. The last employee who went to collect it had his leg broken and still hadn’t been discharged from the hospital…

How on earth did they manage it?

Chapter 5: Qiu Yunzhen’s Curiosity

William Thompson’s eyes widened as he stared at the bag of money in front of him, his face full of disbelief. Just as Grace Foster had said earlier, if this debt was easy to collect, he would have done it himself long ago. Five percent commission—fifty thousand yuan—might not be a huge sum to William Thompson, but who would ever complain about having more money?

It was precisely because this debt was so hard to collect—Frank Foster was half in the underworld, kept thugs under him, and the paperwork for the debt was a mess, with incomplete contracts—that the other side never intended to pay, and it had become a bad debt. William Thompson had even planned to use this as an excuse to kick Grace Foster out of the company, and deal with Henry Carter as well. But they actually managed to get the money back!

Grace Foster’s eyes were also wide open as she turned to look at William Thompson in shock. Suddenly, she realized that Henry Carter probably hadn’t gone out for lunch with friends, but had gone back to Kaige Company to collect the debt. But what she couldn’t understand was why Frank Foster, who had been so aggressive and scheming before, suddenly decided to pay up…

William Thompson also noticed Grace Foster’s surprised expression, and immediately understood that it was probably Henry Carter who had recovered the debt, and had nothing to do with Grace Foster. He forced himself to appear calm and said, “Henry Carter, not bad, you actually managed to recover the money all by yourself…”

As soon as William Thompson said this, Henry Carter knew exactly what he was up to. He smiled faintly and said, “I wasn’t the one who recovered the money. When we went there this morning, Grace Foster had already negotiated with them. I just came back later because they needed some time to prepare the cash…”

William Thompson cursed inwardly. If Henry Carter had agreed with his statement just now, he could have used it as an excuse to refuse to make Grace Foster permanent. But now that Henry Carter had said this in front of all the employees, there was no way he could go back on his word…

A leader who goes back on his word—especially in front of everyone—would suffer a huge blow to his authority. What’s more, if Henry Carter used this against him and reported it to higher-ups, he’d have no way to explain himself…
