Chapter 17

Evelyn Clark instinctively let out a terrified scream, feeling the world spin before her eyes. Evelyn Clark was overwhelmed with fear, and as she was about to fall backward onto the stairs, it was as if a gust of wind swept by—a strong arm appeared behind Evelyn Clark, catching her just in time.

Evelyn Clark fell backward straight into Henry Carter's arms, her hand reflexively flinging up as she fell, and the underwear she was holding smacked right into Henry Carter's face.

Although it was only a brief contact, a faint orchid-like fragrance from the underwear still wafted into Henry Carter's nostrils, and he couldn't help but subconsciously sniff.

Evelyn Clark was lying sideways across Henry Carter's arm, her gaze just happening to look up at Henry Carter's face. She also clearly saw her own underwear hit Henry Carter's face, and even more clearly noticed Henry Carter's subtle sniffing motion.

Evelyn Clark's previously panicked face instantly turned cold and furious.

Her most intimate underwear had actually come into contact with Henry Carter's face, and he even...

Pervert!

Disgusting creep!

Evelyn Clark had no time to wonder how Henry Carter had suddenly crossed such a distance to catch her; her heart was already filled with anger. Being held like this by Henry Carter, a faint smell of alcohol mixed with a man's scent rushed into her nose.

Evelyn Clark's body stiffened for a moment, but she didn't struggle. Instead, she calmly took a deep breath, stared at Henry Carter's face, and said coldly, "Help me up."

Henry Carter met Evelyn Clark's icy gaze, and thinking of his own reflexive action just now, he felt a bit awkward. He quickly helped Evelyn Clark stand upright.

After standing up straight, Evelyn Clark shot Henry Carter a cold look. "Wait for me downstairs. We need to talk."

Henry Carter was slightly taken aback, then nodded. "Alright."

Evelyn Clark went upstairs, while Henry Carter walked over to the sofa and sat down, feeling a bit conflicted.

The two of them had been living together for a month, but this was the first time they had any physical contact. Before this, they had barely even spoken to each other.

Henry Carter sat for about five minutes before Evelyn Clark reappeared in the living room, sitting on the sofa opposite him. Her face had returned to its usual cool indifference, and she had changed into a relatively conservative long-sleeved cotton pajama set, covering her graceful figure completely.

Henry Carter withdrew his gaze, lazily leaned back on the sofa, and smiled. "Is there something you want to say to me?"

Evelyn Clark looked at Henry Carter, who was sitting so casually, and subconsciously frowned. After considering for a moment, she spoke calmly: "I heard you collected the debt from Kaige Company today?"

Henry Carter grunted in acknowledgment, but didn't react further.

Evelyn Clark was a bit dissatisfied with Henry Carter's attitude and paused slightly. "I heard that the task of collecting the debt was originally assigned to a female employee?"

Henry Carter looked at Evelyn Clark in surprise. She knew so much—someone must have reported to her.

"Yes. Knowing full well the debt couldn't be collected, they still sent a woman who just joined the company. I couldn't stand it, so I helped out..."

Evelyn Clark's eyes narrowed slightly, but a sharp, blade-like glint suddenly flashed in them. "If no one else could collect it, how did you manage to?"

Henry Carter chuckled, his gaze boldly sweeping over Evelyn Clark. "Your husband is quite capable, you know. It's just a million-yuan debt—how could I not get it back?"

Evelyn Clark's brows immediately furrowed, and clear dissatisfaction appeared on her cold face. She was obviously displeased with Henry Carter's use of the word "husband." Evelyn Clark didn't press for details, realizing that Henry Carter had no intention of explaining.

"I want to talk about our relationship..."

Henry Carter straightened his back a little. "Go ahead, I'm listening."

After a brief pause, Evelyn Clark began, "We've already gotten our marriage certificate and are living under the same roof. Legally, we're a married couple. But given our special circumstances, I've thought of a few points. I'll say them, and you can tell me if you have any objections."

Henry Carter grunted and grinned. "Go ahead."

"First, although we're legally married, emotionally you are you and I am me. We each remain independent. Neither of us can force the other to do anything they don't want to do, and likewise, neither of us can interfere in the other's life..."

Henry Carter squinted slightly. "How do you mean?"

Evelyn Clark's brows furrowed a bit more, the corners of her mouth lifting slightly in a look that said 'you know exactly what I mean.' She said coldly, "It means that even though we live together, you do your thing and I do mine. Whether you go clubbing or pick up girls, I won't care, but likewise, please don't interfere with me. Also, I will not fulfill the duties of a wife..."

Henry Carter smiled lightly, his expression calm. "Oh, I see. Sure, I have no objections."
