Chapter 20

Henry Carter looked at Evelyn Clark with some surprise. Evelyn Clark frowned slightly, “We work at the same company. If we drive separately, it just wouldn’t make sense…”

Henry Carter couldn’t help but laugh. So that’s what it was.

“All right, then let’s leave together after work… Should I buy something? It doesn’t seem right to show up empty-handed.”

The corners of Evelyn Clark’s mouth lifted slightly. “You don’t need to worry about that. I’ll take care of it. You just need to show up.”

“Okay.”

Henry Carter nodded readily in agreement. Looking at Evelyn Clark’s cool and aloof face, he shrugged and said, “But if you still have that same expression when we get there, I think they’ll definitely notice something’s up…”

Evelyn Clark bit her lip, a hint of annoyance flashing in her eyes as she glared at Henry Carter. “I know.”

To Henry Carter, Evelyn Clark’s annoyed expression actually seemed rather cute. Normally, you’d never see such an expression on her face, and he suddenly felt a mischievous urge. “I’m afraid you won’t be able to switch gears in time when the moment comes. How about we practice first?”

Evelyn Clark glared angrily at Henry Carter. Henry Carter grinned, showing his teeth. “I’m just doing this for everyone’s sake.”

Evelyn Clark took a deep breath, looking suspiciously at the beaming Henry Carter. “How do we practice?”

Henry Carter replied with a cheeky smile, “Start by calling me ‘husband’ and let me hear it.”

Evelyn Clark’s eyes instantly widened, her anger suddenly intensifying, and the whole room seemed to fill with the tense, oppressive air of an approaching storm.

Henry Carter seemed completely oblivious to Evelyn Clark’s anger, still smiling at her.

Their gazes met in the air, as if invisible sparks were flying.

After a long moment, Evelyn Clark finally spat out three words, firm and resolute.

“Not a chance!”

Chapter 10: Cousin?

When Henry Carter walked out of the CEO’s office, there was a faint smile on his face.

To be able to make Evelyn Clark lose her composure like that wasn’t something just anyone could do. But Henry Carter felt that even when Evelyn Clark was angry or upset, she looked much better than her usual cold and indifferent self.

At least, at this moment, she seemed more like a real, flesh-and-blood person with genuine emotions, rather than that untouchable ice queen.

Although Evelyn Clark had spoken toughly, he knew that in front of her grandparents, she would show a completely different side. His suggestion to practice was really just teasing her.

Back in his office, he played some games, then opened a novel to read. He kept reading until it was almost time to get off work, but Grace Foster still hadn’t returned.

Henry Carter picked up his phone from the desk, planning to call Grace Foster. Since he was going to accompany Evelyn Clark to her grandparents’ house for dinner tonight, he obviously couldn’t have dinner with Grace Foster.

Just as Henry Carter found Grace Foster’s number and was about to dial, his phone suddenly rang. It was Grace Foster calling. Henry Carter thought, what a coincidence, and answered the call.

“I was just about to call you, and here you are… Where are you?”

Grace Foster’s apologetic voice came through the receiver: “{Yang ge}, we’re still out right now. I’m afraid I won’t be able to treat you to dinner tonight…”

Henry Carter laughed, “No problem, I actually have something to do too.”

Grace Foster didn’t know Henry Carter really had plans, and thought he was just being nice, so she apologized repeatedly: “I’m really sorry, I thought I’d be done this afternoon, but the meeting dragged on and now we have to go to dinner. I’ll make it up to you tomorrow, okay?”

Henry Carter chuckled, “I really do have something tonight, so you don’t need to apologize. I was actually about to call you to say sorry myself…”

Hearing Henry Carter explain again so seriously, Grace Foster finally felt a bit relieved. She had been worried that Henry Carter would think she was backing out of her promise to treat him to dinner. Now it seemed Henry Carter really did have something to do.

“That’s good. I was worried you’d be upset…”

Henry Carter couldn’t help but laugh, “You really think so little of your {Yang ge}? I’d get mad just because I missed one meal? If I went hungry for two days, I’d probably die of anger before I starved to death…”

Grace Foster laughed too, then complained in a low voice, “These people from Donglin Company are so annoying. Such a simple issue, but they dragged it out for ages. Now we have to go to dinner and keep talking at the table…”

Henry Carter frowned, “How many people are there?”

“There are three from our company: Section Chief Li, Zhang Yan, and me. From Donglin Company, there’s President Huang and his secretary…”

Henry Carter grunted in acknowledgment, then reminded her, “Dinner is fine, but don’t drink, okay?”

Hearing Henry Carter’s concern, Grace Foster felt a warmth in her heart and replied softly, “Okay, I’ll be careful. Thank you, {Yang ge}.”

Henry Carter said with a smile, “No need to thank me. If anything comes up, you can call me anytime.”

“All right… They’re calling me now, I’ll hang up.”
