Chapter 4

William Carter said, heh, you guys don’t get it at all—being a Chinese major is something you can’t even imagine.

The male-to-female ratio is 1:4, so there are tons of girls. Aren’t you jealous?

There are barely any class hours, most exams are open-book, and you can play games all you want during the semester. As long as you cram for the few closed-book exams the night before, you can get a scholarship. Aren’t you jealous?

As for job prospects, William Carter just streams games online, and even if he skips a few days, he can still cover his living expenses. What’s there to worry about?

He’s already got it all planned out. Anyway, a Chinese major is guaranteed to get a diploma. When the time comes, he’ll take his degree from a top university and get a cushy, money-grabbing planner job at a domestic game company, or just go full-time as a streamer. Either way, he’ll have no problem making a living.

As for Grace Bennett, there’s even less to worry about. She’s never stopped getting scholarships, barely has any classes in her senior year, and has already secured a spot in the university’s graduate program. She’s also interning for some tech media outlets, and her monthly miscellaneous income adds up to over ten thousand yuan.

Otherwise, there’s no way the two of them could afford the rent for a two-bedroom apartment near campus.

But William Carter himself is a bit strapped for cash and often has to do some tutoring or something to make up for his own spending.

William Carter quickly tidied up the dishes and put them in the sink to soak.

Grace Bennett had already slung her bag over her shoulder. “Let’s wash them when we get back. I’ll go to school with you.”

“Okay.” William Carter went to his room to grab his textbooks and headed out with Grace Bennett. “You have class today too?”

Grace Bennett shook her head. “No class, but the counselor asked a few of us student leaders to come by. Said there’s an urgent announcement.”

William Carter thought for a moment. “Could it be about that silver ring?”

Grace Bennett: “I think it’s very likely. Don’t you have tutoring tonight?”

William Carter shook his head. “It got rescheduled to tomorrow.”

Grace Bennett nodded. “Alright, I still have to go to my internship this afternoon, so I probably won’t be back for dinner. You’ll have to handle it yourself.”

Grace Bennett was an orphan adopted by William Carter’s parents when she was very young. William Carter’s parents never hid this from her, and Grace Bennett never felt upset about it.

Although William Carter’s parents weren’t related to Grace Bennett by blood, they loved her even more than their own daughter.

When William Carter was in high school, his parents were already traveling abroad frequently for business and were rarely in the country. Both William Carter and Grace Bennett became very independent and gradually got used to this lifestyle.

However, not long after William Carter started college, a globally shocking accident occurred. The flight William Carter’s parents were on disappeared without a trace. After months of searching, there was still no news. In the end, the flight was presumed lost, with all passengers and crew declared dead.

This incident pushed William Carter to the brink of collapse for several months. Grace Bennett also suffered from nervous exhaustion during that time, with severe insomnia at night. That’s when the two of them decided to move out of the dorms.

To this day, even though William Carter and Grace Bennett live in their own rented apartment, they still go back regularly to clean the house, and haven’t touched a cent of the condolence money. As for the compensation, since not even the plane wreckage has been found, who knows when they’ll ever get it.

William Carter prefers to believe his parents are just afk.

Relying solely on their own income to pay rent in the capital is still a bit tough, but luckily both Grace Bennett and William Carter can earn money. With his gaming skills, William Carter streams popular games like Moon God’s Omen and Lost Treasure on live platforms and makes a decent income.

If Grace Bennett started streaming, she’d probably blow up, but she’s not interested in that, doesn’t like being in the spotlight, and most importantly, she’s not even 18 yet, so she can’t stream.

The apartment William Carter rents isn’t far from the school—just a ten-minute walk.

Grace Bennett headed to the college office, while William Carter went straight to the teaching building, making it to class just as the bell rang and finding an empty seat in the back row.

“Yo, brother-in-law, you’re here.” David Clark greeted him with a good-natured, sleazy grin.

William Carter rolled his eyes and noticed that David Clark had also taken off his glasses.

It wasn’t just the two of them—at least 80% of the class used to wear glasses, but now everyone had taken them off.

No need to ask, it was definitely thanks to that silver ring.

David Clark was William Carter’s roommate and a good friend.

Ever since they found out Grace Bennett was William Carter’s sister, William Carter’s shameless roommates started calling him “brother-in-law” every time they saw him, with zero restraint.

David Clark was the “good-natured sleazy” type—actually kind of handsome, but his whole vibe was ruined the moment he smiled. He was never serious, and flipping each other off had basically become a daily routine between him and William Carter.

Well, maybe that’s not quite right. It’s more like every time William Carter flipped him off, David Clark would look all blissful and say, “Come at me.”

David Clark lowered his voice and said, “You weren’t in the dorm last night, but it was wild. We didn’t get to sleep until after five in the morning. I’m still dead tired.”

William Carter frowned. “No way, I just scrolled through the news and went back to sleep.”

David Clark looked shocked. “You’ve got nerves of steel! Do you even know how insane this thing is? Don’t be fooled by how normal everything seems—behind the scenes, it’s already total chaos, this ring—”

Before David Clark could finish, the professor on the podium coughed twice.
