Chapter 8

After choosing to start as a useless person, William Carter turned into this ragged, ghostly figure, with nothing on his body but a pair of tattered shorts.

This white platform looked quite smooth, but when he actually touched it, it wasn’t quite like that—the friction felt pretty good, at least it wouldn’t affect his jump after takeoff.

There was another thing that surprised William Carter: this platform basically had no sharp edges, everything was smooth and rounded, a bit like a curved phone screen. The curved edges and the four sides of the platform were all extremely smooth, almost like glass.

It was clearly the same material, yet the friction was so different—this was also something very hard to understand.

In other words, you had to “jump” across; trying to grab the edge of the platform with your hands and climb up would be very difficult, because the edge was just too slippery.

William Carter patted his bare chest and gritted his teeth: “Well, let’s give it a try. There can’t be only one life in this game, right?”

William Carter didn’t believe that dying in the game would have any consequences in the real world. Obviously, everything here was an illusion. Whoever created all this might have some purpose, but if they wanted to kill everyone, there was no need to go to all this trouble.

However, people as reckless as him were definitely in the minority. No matter how much most people tried to comfort themselves, in this situation, they absolutely wouldn’t dare to jump—they’d just tremble on the platform.

Well, this could be considered one of William Carter’s few strengths.

William Carter took two steps back, then ran up and jumped.

As his body kept falling into the void, William Carter really felt like his heart was about to stop. But the moment he jumped, the green virtual frame ahead instantly turned into another white platform, which caught him steadily.

William Carter gasped for breath. Even though he had steeled himself to make the jump, thinking back on it now still made him shudder.

The new platform was the same size as the previous green outline—a rectangular prism—with an arrow on top pointing to the next green virtual frame.

“So this so-called trial is just about jumping down again and again:”

Chapter 6: Jump

William Carter also found it a bit unbelievable. Since this silver ring could completely open up a consciousness-based copy in everyone’s mind, it meant it was capable of many other powerful things.

Yet all it did was make a game, and the gameplay couldn’t be simpler: just keep jumping from one platform to another.

But when you really looked down at the endless void beneath your feet, and had to jump yourself, no one would think this was just a game.

William Carter looked at the next platform.

It was a circular platform, but the diameter of the circle was even shorter than the narrow side of the rectangular platform under William Carter’s feet. If you looked down from above, the two platforms would form the shape of an “i”.

And the distance between the two platforms was now over two meters.

“Damn, the third platform is already this hard to jump to?”

Looking at the small platform in the distance, William Carter really wanted to quit and flip the table: I’m done with this.

After the previous jump, William Carter had basically figured out the basic stats of this body. It was a bit better than an ordinary human, but not by much.

In daily life, William Carter was pretty much a homebody, not in great shape. Compared to his real-life body, this one was a bit improved, but nowhere near as good as an athlete’s starting stats—so you can imagine how weak it was.

Andrew Carter was still muttering about the athlete’s start. If he were an athlete, jumping this would be a piece of cake.

But there was no point in William Carter hesitating now. He could only grit his teeth, run up, and jump toward the circular platform ahead.

“Shit—”

Only after jumping did William Carter realize he’d jumped a bit too early. His right foot did manage to land on the edge of the circular platform, but it slipped, and he fell straight down.

Cold sweat broke out all over William Carter. He frantically tried to grab the edge of the round platform with both hands, but it was all in vain—the slippery edge gave him no chance to save himself.

William Carter could only fall in despair, like a free-falling body, into the endless abyss.

“Bang.”

With a dull thud, William Carter felt his back hit something hard. When he got up and looked, wasn’t this the same rectangular platform as before?

Obviously, in this trial scene, falling didn’t mean death. Instead, you returned to the previous platform and continued attempting the jump.

Although William Carter had taken a fall, his back didn’t hurt, and his body didn’t feel tired—there were no negative effects at all.

It seemed that in this space, he had unlimited stamina and could keep jumping again and again until he succeeded.

William Carter composed himself and kept jumping.

Second try, failed.

Third try, failed.

Fourth try—

He lost count of how many times he jumped before William Carter finally stood on that tiny round platform.
