Chapter 20

David Harris originally wanted to reveal that William Carter had taken a girl out to have fun, but for some reason, the words changed direction as soon as they reached his lips.

Upon hearing this, Sophie Clark across the table immediately bit her lip, her fist under the table clenching tightly.

Ever since they ran into each other on Central Street last time, she had been waiting for William Carter to regret it, to come find her and admit his mistake, to beg her to give him another chance.

But in the blink of an eye, a week had already passed. Not only did he show no sign of regret, he hadn’t even sent her a single QQ message.

She felt that William Carter had really changed, become so much more patient. In the past, he couldn’t stand not chatting with her for even half a day, but now he could hold out for a whole week.

Thinking of this made her feel very annoyed.

How could the once so obedient William Carter become like this?

She was clearly doing it for his own good, always thinking of him, even encouraging him...

She hadn’t wanted to come to this gathering, since Sophie Clark didn’t like this kind of atmosphere, but she just wanted to see if William Carter was really as carefree as he claimed.

In Sophie Clark’s eyes, William Carter must be enduring unbearable pain, and the moment he saw her, he would definitely not be able to resist apologizing.

But what she didn’t expect was that even though William Carter knew about the gathering, he didn’t even show up.

“William Carter is doing business?” Andrew Bennett looked at David Harris, his expression a bit surprised.

“Yeah.”

“What kind of business is he doing, opening a shop?”

Sophie Clark snapped out of her thoughts and let out a light laugh: “He’s not that capable. He’s just selling boxed lunches over on Central Street. Emily and I ran into him last time we were out shopping.”

“Huh? Selling boxed lunches counts as doing business now?” Andrew Bennett laughed. He didn’t say much more, but his expression clearly showed some disdain.

The other classmates around couldn’t help but snicker as well, thinking it was a good thing William Carter didn’t come to the gathering, or he would have been utterly embarrassed.

Although people say there’s no distinction between high and low professions, even Kong Yiji couldn’t take off his long gown. Naturally, these high schoolers looked down on such low-end jobs. In their eyes, as soon-to-be college students, they were the talents of society, the pillars of the nation. Selling boxed lunches was just too humiliating.

David Harris wanted to curse after hearing this.

Do you guys even know that my Brother Carter made 650,000 today in one go?

Is my Brother Carter a regular at the foot massage parlor? Can you guys do that?

But in the end, he didn’t say any of this out loud, because William Carter had just told him two days ago: some people laugh at you not because of what you did, but because they just want to laugh at you.

Damn, was Brother Carter hinting at something?

If so, he really is a prophet.

Goodness.

Truly worthy of being my godfather!

But thinking of this, David Harris suddenly glanced at Sophie Clark across from him. He had always thought of Goddess Clark as a white moonlight kind of existence, but today, he suddenly felt like the filter was shattered. So even goddesses talk behind people’s backs—can she still be called a goddess?

Looks like there was a reason Brother Carter turned and left that day.

David Harris wanted to keep the peace, but the others weren’t about to let go of the topic of William Carter so easily.

Besides Emily Smith, Sophie Clark had another close friend named Sarah Howard, who usually liked to make sarcastic remarks, so as soon as she heard William Carter’s name, she immediately jumped in.

“By the way, Sophie, didn’t William Carter confess to you on the last day of the college entrance exam?”

Sophie Clark got angry just thinking about that day: “Don’t even mention it. It makes me mad. After his confession failed, he even asked for his love letter back and said he didn’t really like me, making it seem like I was just being self-indulgent. What kind of person is that!”

Sarah Howard pouted: “He probably realized he couldn’t win you over, and was afraid of losing face and being laughed at, so he just acted tough.”

“Yeah, that’s what Emily said too.”

“Maybe it’s the same today.”

“What do you mean?” A trace of confusion flashed in Sophie Clark’s eyes.

“He knew he’d be laughed at, so he didn’t dare come today.” Sarah Howard said as she poured herself some more water.

Hearing this, Sophie Clark’s tightly furrowed brow suddenly relaxed a little.

Right, how did she not think of that? William Carter wasn’t really that carefree. He didn’t actually not want to see her—he was just afraid of being laughed at!

Hmph, serves him right.

Who told him to treat her like that? It’s good for him to suffer a little. Let’s see who’ll be the one crying with regret in the future.

As Sophie Clark’s pride flared up, she bit her little silver teeth together tightly.

Just then, the door to the private room was pushed open again. Emily Smith hurried in, apologizing just like David Harris had.

“Sorry, something came up on the way and delayed me. What were you all talking about?”

“We were talking about William Carter. He was too embarrassed to come, isn’t that funny?”

When Emily Smith heard this, her expression froze, and even her movement to sit down paused for a moment.

The real reason she was so late was because she ran into William Carter outside.

And she didn’t just run into William Carter...
