Chapter 16

The elf lady also smiled at him and said, “Too bad I can’t shoot you.” Both of them laughed, and all hostility disappeared.

Everyone put away their weapons and walked to the side. David Harris looked around and suddenly realized he was no longer in the place where he had just been gathering herbs. He felt puzzled, full of questions, and lowered his head to call Grace.

Grace stood up; she had been lying behind David Harris the whole time, so no one had seen her. Now that she appeared, everyone hurriedly drew their weapons. The warrior shouted, “Monster beast!” and everyone was on high alert.

Seeing this, David Harris couldn’t help but laugh and quickly said, “Don’t misunderstand, she’s my pet wolf, Grace. There’s no need to be nervous.”

Only then did everyone put away their weapons.

They arrived at an open area, where there was a strange building in the center, surrounded by scorched earth and many charred lumps. Having spent many years on the battlefield, David Harris could tell at a glance that these were the remains of burned corpses. The people in front had tattered clothes, as if they had just been through a fight. David Harris found it odd but didn’t say anything, and entered the building with the others.

The furnishings inside the bizarre building were also unusual. There were no ornately carved wooden doors or windows; the doors seemed to be made of stone, and the tables, chairs, and benches inside were all of strange shapes.

Everyone sat down. David Harris took a seat by an interesting couch, and Grace lay at his feet, closing her eyes to rest.

Only then did David Harris ask, “What are you all… what…” Suddenly realizing that calling them monsters might not be appropriate, he didn’t know what to say.

The elf woman picked up his words and said, “I am Linda of the elf tribe. Linda Hamilton, but you can call me Linda.”

The warrior followed, “I am the swordsman Chuck Dax, but you can just call me Chuck.”

“I’m the mage Elsa Finnett,” the girl in strange clothes introduced herself.

Another odd, short creature said in a gruff voice, “I’m the dwarf Snow.”

Each person introduced themselves, all looking at David Harris.

David Harris said, “My name is David Harris, and this is Grace.”

Everyone was puzzled. Elsa asked, “So what’s your family name?”

David Harris was also surprised and said, “My family name is Wang, isn’t that obvious?”

“Then you should be called Feng·Wang. Why is your family name in front?”

David Harris frowned and thought, “Where on earth is this place? Why is everything so strange?” But he still said, “Just call me David Harris, I’m used to it.”

Elsa was a rather talkative and lively girl, as David Harris had noticed. She immediately nodded and sweetly said, “Okay, I’ll call you David Harris.”

Then she timidly asked, “You’re human, right?”

David Harris frowned but still answered, “I suppose so, I’m a human.” Then he asked, “Where is this place?”

Chuck quickly replied, “This is the famous Dark Star Valley, home of the evil mage Robert.”

David Harris felt his head spinning. Evil mage, magic circles, demon clans, strange elves, odd dwarves—everything was so bizarre, as if he wasn’t in his original world. But his years in the military had taught him that at times like this, it was most important to stay clear-headed and first figure out the current situation and why he was here.

David Harris stopped Chuck from continuing and asked, “What country is this?”

Elsa and the others looked at David Harris in confusion, not understanding him at all. His strange hair color and lack of knowledge made them suspicious. If he hadn’t easily caught Linda’s arrow and subdued Chuck, they probably would have captured and interrogated him already.

It was Linda who finally spoke: “This is within the borders of the Tianlong Empire.”

David Harris still looked confused after hearing this. He asked again, “Do you know where Zhonghua Shangguo is?”

Everyone shook their heads. Elsa even said, “What’s Zhonghua Shangguo? Never heard of it.”

Suddenly, Linda said, “I understand now.” Everyone’s attention turned to her.

Linda gathered her thoughts and began to explain.

It turned out that Linda and the others were a famous adventurer team, and this time they had accepted a commission to eliminate the evil mage Robert.

Robert was called evil mainly because he often experimented with black magic on living people or elves, which enraged the public and forced him to flee to Dark Star Valley. He was also a summoner, and had summoned many zombies to guard himself, but Linda and the others still managed to break in. After all the zombies were killed, Robert had no choice but to use all his strength to cast his ultimate summoning spell, calling forth a magical beast from another world’s magic circle. This spell could only be used once in Robert’s entire life, so he had never dared to use it lightly. After using it this time, Robert died from exhaustion of his magical power. But the summoning circle had already been activated, and when the magic circle was completed, they saw David Harris and Grace inside it, which made them suspect that David Harris was from the demon clan.
