Chapter 7

Daisy Smith's eyes were red-rimmed as she spoke in a trembling voice, "Thank you for saving me, thank you so much."

"You're welcome, it's my duty." Luke Johnson took fifteen dollars out of his pocket and placed it in Daisy Smith's hand. "I appreciate your kindness, but here's your money back."

Daisy Smith opened her mouth in disbelief. "Did you come to find me just to return the money?"

  "Yes."

"Wait, I only invited you for a drink to thank you. If you hadn't warned me in time, my tire would probably have been ruined, and you even saved me..."

"Then invite me openly, not sneak off after paying."

"You're right. Next time, I'll formally invite you to express my gratitude," Daisy Smith said solemnly.

"Your body hasn't recovered yet, so get some rest first." Luke Johnson replied perfunctorily. None of this really mattered; what mattered was returning the lottery money.

  ……

A few minutes later, nearby patrol officers arrived at the scene, put up police tape marked 'LAPD', and helped Luke Johnson maintain order.

Twenty minutes later, people from the 'Robbery-Homicide Division' also arrived.

"Yeh, yeh! Isn't this the big hero who single-handedly caught the robber!" Marcus Johnson's tone carried a hint of envy and jealousy.

Luke Johnson was the only one in the Robbery-Homicide Division who got off work on time; everyone else was working overtime.

  And the result?

Luke Johnson ended up being the hero who caught the suspect.

  Who could argue with that?

Captain Susan Smith glanced around. "Luke Johnson, what's the situation at the scene?"

Luke Johnson gave a detailed account of the arrest.

Susan Smith pressed further, "Do you think he's the suspect from the previous two 'Taser robberies'?"

  "I'm not sure."

  "What about the suspect?"

"He won't talk until his lawyer arrives."

Susan Smith patted Luke Johnson on the shoulder. "Good job, well done!"

"I told you, even without working overtime, I can still contribute to the team."

"Very good, I'm looking forward to your future performance."

Deputy Captain Vincent Johnson walked over. "CBS is here. They want to interview Luke Johnson."

Susan Smith looked at Luke Johnson. "What do you think?"

Getting publicity is nice, but as a police officer, it's better to keep a low profile. Even if not for your own safety, you have to think of your family's.

"Captain, I'm a bit tired. Right now, I just want to take a shower and get a good night's sleep."

Luke Johnson waved goodbye to his colleagues. "See you tomorrow."

Deputy Captain Vincent Johnson was speechless. "We're just going to let him leave like that?"

Susan Smith retorted, "What else? He caught the suspect. Who contributed more than him?"

  "This kid's got dumb luck!"

Deputy Captain Vincent Johnson shrugged and called out to the others, "Guys, escort the suspect back to the station. We've got a busy night ahead."

  ……

  Back home.

Luke Johnson went straight to his bedroom on the second floor.

He closed the door and began to study the Detective System.

To be precise, he was studying the 'Adventure Card'.

Luke Johnson's consciousness entered the Detective System. The warehouse interface was now empty—the 'Adventure Card' had disappeared.

He recalled the previous system prompt: [You have completed an adventure experience. The Adventure Card has been activated and used.]

He had already thought today's events were too strange. He'd only chased after someone to return money, and ended up catching a robber by chance—his luck was off the charts.

Now it seemed the Detective System had played a role.

The good news was that Luke Johnson had caught a robber and kept his job for now.

The bad news was that the Adventure Card was used up, and Luke Johnson might not get that lucky again.

In his mind, Luke Johnson asked, "Detective System, how can I get a new Adventure Card?"

He asked several times in both Chinese and English, but got no response.

Luke Johnson suddenly felt a bit disappointed. Turns out, being a detective wasn't so easy after all.

Luke Johnson took a shower and lay in bed, his mind full of the day's events...

The Adventure Card was gone, and he didn't feel like scratching any lottery tickets for now.

He'd never won a prize in his life.

As he was drifting off to sleep, a voice sounded in his mind: [Ding-dong, congratulations to the host for successfully capturing a robber. The lottery menu is now activated. You have 10 chances to draw.]

Immediately, an options menu appeared in his mind, with the warehouse interface on the left.

On the right, a new lottery interface had appeared.

In the center was a spinning wheel with a pointed arrow, and in the lower left corner it showed 10 chances to draw.

Luke Johnson didn't know how to operate it, but as soon as he thought of the word "lottery" in his mind, the pointer started spinning.

The pointer stopped, and the selected area lit up, showing one thousand dollars.

A smile curled at the corner of Luke Johnson's mouth. Not bad luck.

At first, he was worried it would land on "Thank you for participating".

  He continued the lottery.

  The pointer spun.

It stopped randomly, and the selected area lit up: one thousand dollars.

  Third draw: Adventure Card.

  Fourth draw: one thousand dollars.

  Fifth draw: one thousand dollars.

  Sixth draw: one thousand dollars.

  Seventh draw: one thousand dollars.

  Eighth draw: one thousand dollars.

  Ninth draw: one thousand dollars.

  Tenth draw: Detection Card.

The card had the word "Detection" written on it, with a small note below: [Active card, function unknown].

  This round's prize list:

  "Eight thousand dollars!"
