"I know this isn't the Ministry of Internal Affairs." Susan Smith retorted, "But do you know why the chief wants me, a supervisor from Internal Affairs, to take over as team captain?"
This question hit Vincent Johnson, the deputy captain, right where it hurt: "I don't know, and I don't want to know."
Chapter 10: Fishing
Little David Marcus was a bit frustrated. He didn't want to provoke a confrontation between the two big shots, but there were some lines he had to hold.
He was well aware of his position and value within the team.
If he lost access to the gang's information channels, it would be hard for him to gain a foothold in the 'Robbery and Homicide Division' on his own abilities.
Little David said, "Bosses, I can't reveal the real identity of the 'Postman,' but I can guarantee that at most he's illegally selling modified guns, and has no direct connection to the robbery case.
Even if he doesn't sell, someone else will. You can never catch all of these people. Besides, we might still need him in the future."
Susan Smith was silent for a moment before saying, "We'll discuss this later. Continue reporting what you've found."
"Yeah." Little David breathed a sigh of relief, instinctively a bit afraid of Susan Smith. "According to the Postman, he put the modified Taser guns up for sale at three gun shops.
Besides the Jovi Gun Shop, there are also the Cadia Gun Shop and the Cucamonga Gun Shop."
Susan Smith instructed, "Raymond Johnson, Jenny Smith, go investigate the Cadia Gun Shop.
David Smith, Luke Johnson, go check out the Cucamonga Gun Shop. Identify the suspects who bought the guns as soon as possible."
"Yes, captain."
"Meeting adjourned. Marcus Johnson, come to my office." Susan Smith dropped this line and got up to leave.
Marcus Johnson spread his hands. "Deputy, you'll back me up, right?"
Vincent Johnson stood up and patted Marcus Johnson on the shoulder. "Good luck."
David Smith tapped his right fist over his heart and pointed at Marcus Johnson.
Little David scratched his curly hair in frustration,
"Fuck!"
...
In a black Dodge Challenger, Luke Johnson was driving, with David Smith in the passenger seat.
David Smith laughed, "Heh, poor Little David, he's going to be made an example of this time."
Luke Johnson said, "Don't gloat. You're not exactly clean yourself."
"Same to you. If you hadn't gotten lucky and caught a robber, you might have already been kicked out of the Robbery and Homicide Division." After a moment of silence, David Smith continued,
"If she keeps this up, I bet in the end only Raymond Johnson and Matthew Johnson will be left on the team."
Raymond Johnson went without saying—model officer of the LAPD.
Matthew Johnson was a civilian officer.
Luke Johnson smiled, "If you don't want to get kicked out, change the way you investigate cases."
"Easier said than done. How?"
Luke Johnson tapped his temple. "Use this more. Watch how I do it in a bit."
"Heh, you're getting weirder. You used to always use your fists instead of your brain. Looks like that attack really affected you."
Luke Johnson didn't answer. If the original host hadn't been attacked, he wouldn't have come to this world.
Ten minutes later.
The car stopped near the Cucamonga Gun Shop. Luke Johnson got out alone.
A male clerk standing by the counter, wiping a handgun, asked, "Sir, what kind of gun are you looking for?"
Luke Johnson looked around the gun shop. The place wasn't big, but there was a wide variety of guns on display. Besides the clerk, there was an older man at the counter on the other side.
"I'm looking for a Taser."
"Have you looked into Tasers before? Any particular model in mind?"
"Not really. I just want something with a lot of power."
"What's your budget?"
"As long as the gun is right, money's not an issue."
"I recommend the X26-C model Taser. It can deliver a 50,000-volt shock, enough to instantly knock down an adult male within fifteen meters.
After being hit, the target will be weak all over for 10 to 30 seconds, giving you plenty of time to handle the situation." As he spoke, the clerk turned and took out a yellow Taser.
"You can try how it feels in your hand."
Luke Johnson picked up the Taser, made a shooting gesture, then put it back on the counter, looking uninterested. "Feels okay, but it doesn't meet my needs."
"How so?"
"Not powerful enough."
"Sir, this gun is definitely enough for dealing with ordinary people."
"My family runs a farm. Wild animals often come and cause trouble. This thing might work on groundhogs, but it definitely can't take down a wild boar."
"If it's for wild boars, I recommend a semi-automatic rifle—more bullets, more power, better for wild animals."
"I'm here to buy a gun, not to be told how to do my job." Luke Johnson put down the gun and made as if to leave.
"Sir, please wait. We have another Taser with even more power that should meet your needs." The older man came over to stop him.
"Are you the owner?"
"Yes. We have a Taser in the shop that can deliver up to 100,000 volts. It could take down a wild boar, even a black bear."
Luke Johnson nodded. "That's exactly what I need."
The owner gave the clerk a look, signaling him to go get the gun.
